The methyl carbocation is ubiquitous in gaseous environments, such as planetary ionospheres, cometary comae, and the interstellar medium, as well as combustion systems and plasma setups for technological applications. Here we report on a joint experimental and theoretical study on the mechanism of the reaction CH + CHCCCH (but-2-yne, also known as dimethylacetylene), by combining guided ion beam mass spectrometry experiments with ab initio calculations of the potential energy hypersurface. Such a reaction is relevant in understanding the chemical evolution of Saturn's largest satellite, Titan.

Optical Control of the Resonant Dipole-Dipole Interaction between Rydberg Atoms.

Phys Rev Lett

August 2017

Laboratoire Charles Fabry, UMR 8501, Institut d'Optique, CNRS, Univ Paris Sud 11, 2 Avenue Augustin Fresnel, 91127 Palaiseau cedex, France.

We report on the local control of the transition frequency of a spin 1/2 encoded in two Rydberg levels of an individual atom by applying a state-selective light shift using an addressing beam. With this tool, we first study the spectrum of an elementary system of two spins, tuning it from a nonresonant to a resonant regime, where "bright" (super-radiant) and "dark" (subradiant) states emerge. We observe the collective enhancement of the microwave coupling to the bright state.

July 2016

Institut des Sciences Moléculaires d'Orsay (ISMO), Bât.210, UMR 8214, CNRS, Univ. Paris-Sud 11, Université Paris-Saclay, F-91405 Orsay Cedex, France.

The effect of deuteration of acetylacetone (C5O2H8) is explored by means of IR spectroscopy of its single and double deuterated isotopologues trapped in neon matrices. The whole vibrational spectra of chelated enols are very sensitive to the H-D exchange of the hydrogen atom involved in the internal hydrogen bond. UV excitation of double deuterated acetylacetone isolated in neon matrices induces the formation of four open enol isomers which can be divided into two groups of two conformers, depending on their formation kinetics.

Univ Paris Diderot, Sorbonne Paris Cité, Laboratoire Interdisciplinaire des Energies de Demain, 75205 Paris CEDEX 13, France. Electronic address:

In filamentous fungi, entrance into stationary phase is complex as it is accompanied by several differentiation and developmental processes, including the synthesis of pigments, aerial hyphae, anastomoses and sporophores. The regulatory networks that control these processes are still incompletely known. The analysis of the "Impaired in the development of Crippled Growth (IDC)" mutants of the model filamentous ascomycete Podospora anserina has already yielded important information regarding the pathway regulating entrance into stationary phase.

2-n-propylquinoline (2-n-PQ) had shown interesting in vivo antileishmanial activities after administration by oral route on leishmaniasis animal models. However, the lipophilic properties of this compound avoid its use by intravenous route, this route being indicated in cases of severe visceral leishmaniasis with vomiting. Thus, a 2-n-propylquinoline hydroxypropyl beta-cyclodextrin (2-n-PQ-HPC) formulation was set up in this aim.

The first enantioselective metal-catalyzed [2 + 2 + 2] cycloaddition involving a double asymmetric induction has been devised. It relies on the use of an in situ generated chiral cationic rhodium(I) catalyst with a matched chiral ligand/chiral counterion pair. Careful optimization of the catalytic system, as well as of the reaction conditions, led to atroposelective [2 + 2 + 2] pyridone cycloadducts with high ee's up to 96%.

Partially coherent ultrafast spectrography.

Nat Commun

March 2015

Synchrotron SOLEIL, Saint Aubin, BP 34, 91 192 Gif-sur-Yvette, France.

Modern ultrafast metrology relies on the postulate that the pulse to be measured is fully coherent, that is, that it can be completely described by its spectrum and spectral phase. However, synthesizing fully coherent pulses is not always possible in practice, especially in the domain of emerging ultrashort X-ray sources where temporal metrology is strongly needed. Here we demonstrate how frequency-resolved optical gating (FROG), the first and one of the most widespread techniques for pulse characterization, can be adapted to measure partially coherent pulses even down to the attosecond timescale.

Observation of dipole-quadrupole interaction in an ultracold gas of Rydberg atoms.

Laboratory of Physical Chemistry, ETH Zurich, Vladimir-Prelog-Weg 2, 8057 Zurich, Switzerland.

We observe the direct excitation of pairs of Cs atoms from the ground state to molecular states correlating asymptotically to nsn'f asymptotes. The molecular resonances are interpreted as originating from the dipole-quadrupole interaction between the nsn'f pair states and close-by npnp asymptotes (22≤n≤32). This interpretation is supported by Stark spectroscopy of the pair states and a detailed modeling of the interaction potentials.

Cutaneous melanomas are postulated to arise through at least two causal pathways, namely the "chronic sun exposure" and "nevus" pathways. While chronic sun exposure probably causes many head/neck melanomas, its role at other sites is unclear. In a population-based, case-case comparison study conducted in Brisbane, Australia, we determined the prevalence and epidemiologic correlates of chronic solar damage in skin adjacent to invasive, incident melanomas on the trunk (n = 418) or head/neck (n = 92) among patients aged 18-79 in 2007-2010.

Ultracold gases excited to strongly interacting Rydberg states are a promising system for quantum simulations of many-body systems. For off-resonant excitation of such systems in the dissipative regime, highly correlated many-body states exhibiting, among other characteristics, intermittency and multimodal counting distributions are expected to be created. Here we report on the realization of a dissipative gas of rubidium Rydberg atoms and on the measurement of its full counting statistics and phase diagram for both resonant and off-resonant excitation.
