Wastewater-based surveillance (WBS) allows the analysis of pathogens, chemicals or other biomarkers in wastewater to derive unbiased epidemiological information at population scale. After re-gaining attention during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, the field holds promise as a surveillance and early warning system by tracking emerging pathogens with pandemic potential. Expanding the current toolbox of analytical techniques for wastewater analysis, we explored the use of Hyperplex PCR (hpPCR) to analyse SARS-CoV-2 mutations in wastewater samples collected weekly in up to 22 sites across Sweden between October 2022 and December 2023.

Chorus waves are some of the strongest electromagnetic emissions naturally occurring in space and can cause radiation that is hazardous to humans and satellites. Although chorus waves have attracted extreme interest and been intensively studied for decades, their generation and evolution remain highly debated. Here, in contrast to the conventional expectation that chorus waves are governed by planetary magnetic dipolar fields, we report observations of repetitive, rising-tone chorus waves in the terrestrial neutral sheet, where the effects of the magnetic dipole are absent.

Quaternized cellulose fibers and cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs) are attractive candidates for the development of new renewable and biodegradable materials. However, the etherification reaction, through which functionalization is commonly achieved, provides low efficiencies, limiting industrial interest in the modification. We strive to overcome the challenges posed by ring artifacts in X-ray computed tomography (CT) by developing a novel approach for generating training data for deep learning-based methods. Training such networks require large, high quality, datasets that are often generated in the data domain, time-consuming and expensive. Our objective is to develop a technique for synthesizing realistic ring artifacts directly in the image domain, enabling scalable production of training data without relying on specific imaging system physics.

Building mathematical models of brains is difficult because of the sheer complexity of the problem. One potential starting point is basal cognition, which gives an abstract representation of a range of organisms without central nervous systems, including fungi, slime moulds and bacteria. Surface plasmons offer a promising avenue in the pursuit of swift and localized manipulation of magnetism for advanced magnetic storage and information processing technology. However, observing and understanding spatiotemporal interactions between surface plasmons and spins remains challenging, hindering optimal optical control of magnetism. Here, we demonstrate the spatiotemporal observation of patterned ultrafast demagnetization dynamics in permalloy mediated by propagating surface plasmon polaritons with sub-picosecond time- and sub-μm spatial- scales by employing Lorentz ultrafast electron microscopy combined with excitation through transient optical gratings.

Heterogenous single-atom catalysts (SACs) are reminiscent of homogeneous catalysts because of the similarity of structural motif of active sites, showing the potential of using the advantage of homogeneous catalysts to tackle challenges in hetereogenous catalysis. In heterogeneous oxygen electrocatalysis, the homogeneity of adsorption patterns of reaction intermediates leads to scaling relationships that limit their activities. In contrast, homogeneous catalysts can circumvent such limits by selectively altering the adsorption of intermediates through secondary coordination effects (SCEs).

Background: Observational studies have shown that selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors are associated with an increased risk of bone fractures, but the association can be confounded by indication and other sources of systematic bias that can be minimised in randomised controlled trials (RCTs).
Aim: Our aim was to report the rate, site, context, and predictors of fractures after stroke, and whether the fractures modified the effect of fluoxetine on modified Rankin score (mRS) at six months in an individual patient data meta-analysis of 5907 patients enrolled in three RCTs of fluoxetine (20mg for six months) for stroke recovery.
Methods: We classified fractures by treatment allocation, site (and thus likelihood of osteoporosis) and context, then performed multivariable analyses to explore independent predictors of fractures.

Developing high-activity and long-term stable electrocatalysts for electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction (eCO2RR) to valuable products is still a challenge. We present an easy-to-use, disposable, thermoplastic microwell chip designed to support screening and high-resolution imaging of single-cell behavior in two- and three-dimensional (2D and 3D) cell cultures. We show that the chip has excellent optical properties and provide simple protocols for efficient long-term cell culture of suspension and adherent cells, the latter grown either as monolayers or as hundreds of single, uniformly sized spheroids. We then demonstrate the applicability of the system for single-cell analysis by correlating the dynamic cytotoxic response of single immune cells grown under different metabolic conditions to their intracellular cytolytic load at the end of the assay.

Clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC) presents substantial therapeutic challenges due to its molecular heterogeneity, limited response to conventional therapies, and widespread drug resistance. Recent advancements in molecular research have identified novel targets, such as BUB1B, which has been identified through global transcriptomic profiling and gene co-expression network analysis as critical in ccRCC progression. Parkinson's disease is primarily marked by mitochondrial dysfunction and metabolic abnormalities. We recently reported that the combined metabolic activators improved the immunohistochemical parameters and behavioural functions in Parkinson's disease and Alzheimer's disease animal models and the cognitive functions in Alzheimer's disease patients. These metabolic activators serve as the precursors of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide and glutathione, and they can be used to activate mitochondrial metabolism and eventually treat mitochondrial dysfunction.

We here explore confinement-induced assembly of whey protein nanofibrils (PNFs) into microscale fibers using microfocused synchrotron X-ray scattering. Solvent evaporation aligns the PNFs into anisotropic fibers, and the process is followed in situ by scattering experiments within a droplet of PNF dispersion. We find an optimal temperature at which the order parameter of the protein fiber is maximized, suggesting that the degree of order results from a balance between the time scales of the forced alignment and the rotational diffusion of the fibrils.

We construct a non-chiral conformal field theory (CFT) on the torus that accommodates a second quantization of the elliptic Calogero-Sutherland (eCS) model. We show that the CFT operator that provides this second quantization defines, at the same time, a quantum version of a soliton equation called the non-chiral intermediate long-wave (ncILW) equation. We also show that this CFT operator is a second quantization of a generalized eCS model which can describe arbitrary numbers of four different kinds of particles; we propose that these particles can be identified with solitons of the quantum ncILW equation.

Energy poverty affects 550,000 homes in the Netherlands yet policy interventions to alleviate this issue are rare. Therefore, we test two energy coaching interventions in Amsterdam: a static information group (n = 67) which received energy efficient products and one energy-use report, and a smart information group (n = 50), which also had a display providing real-time feedback on energy-use. Results across both groups, show a 75% success rate for alleviating energy poverty.

This study combines in situ satellite measurements with recent theoretical developments to establish a reinforced shock acceleration model for relativistic electrons.
