Species specific responses to stressors hamper Trichoptera recovery.

Sci Total Environ

October 2024

Freshwater and Marine Ecology, Institute for Biodiversity and Ecosystem Dynamics, University of Amsterdam, 1090 GE Amsterdam, the Netherlands.

Worldwide, aquatic biodiversity is severely threatened as a result of anthropogenic pressures such as pollution, habitat destruction and climate change. Widescale legislation resulted in reduced nutrient- and pesticide loads, and restoration measures allowed modest recovery of freshwater biodiversity. However, from 2010 onwards, recovery in the otherwise unrestored aquatic habitats stagnated.

The "Twin Peaks" method of automated Spike-Wave detection: A two-step, two-criteria Matlab application.

J Neurosci Methods

September 2024

Donders Institute for Brain, Cognition and Behaviour, Radboud University, Thomas van Aquinostraat 4, Nijmegen 6525 GD, the Netherlands.

Background: There are many automated spike-wave discharge detectors, but the known weaknesses of otherwise good methods and the varying working conditions of different research groups (mainly the access to hardware and software) invite further exploration into alternative approaches.

New Method: The algorithm combines two criteria, one in the time-domain and one in the frequency-domain, exploiting morphological asymmetry and the presence of harmonics, respectively. The time-domain criterion is additionally adjusted by normal modelling between the first and second iterations.

During 2020, The European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) began evaluating the OECD Test Guideline 443: Extended One Generation Reproductive Toxicity Study (EOGRTS) to analyze specific aspects related to study design, conduct and toxicological findings. A significant outcome of this ECHA evaluation focused on adequate dose level selection. Subsequently, ECHA published recommendations for DART studies, however, these recommendations seemingly do not align with the principles of the 3Rs, animal welfare or human safety goals, specifically, regarding three aspects.

J Vet Pharmacol Ther

September 2024

GIE-LCH, Laboratoire des Courses Hippiques, Verrières le Buisson, France.

Article Synopsis
  • Clodronic acid is a controlled substance for competition horses, prohibited in racehorses under 3.5 years or within 30 days of a race according to equestrian sports and horseracing authorities.
  • A study involving 35 horses showed that after a single dose, clodronic acid had an estimated half-life of 10.6 days, with various factors like age and training not significantly influencing this.
  • The findings suggest that most horses will have low clodronic acid levels within 30 to 40 days post-treatment, providing guidelines for veterinarians on when horses can safely compete again.

Disease relapse in relation to lymph node sampling in lung carcinoid patients.

Endocr Relat Cancer

September 2024

Department of Pulmonary Diseases, GROW School for Oncology and Reproduction, Maastricht University Medical Center+, Maastricht, The Netherlands.

The predictive value of the extent of peri-operative lymph node (LN) sampling in relation to disease relapse in patients with pulmonary carcinoid (PC) is unknown. Furthermore, post-surgery follow-up recommendations rely on institutional retrospective studies with short follow-ups. We aimed to address these shortcomings by examining the relation between LN sampling and relapse in a population-based cohort with long-term follow-up.

Background: Dendritic cell immunotherapy has proven to be safe and induces an immune response in humans. We aimed to establish the efficacy of dendritic cells loaded with allogeneic tumour cell lysate (MesoPher, Amphera BV, 's-Hertogenbosch, Netherlands) as maintenance therapy in patients with pleural mesothelioma.

Methods: In this open-label, randomised, phase 2/3 study, patients with histologically confirmed unresectable pleural mesothelioma, aged 18 years or older, with an Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group performance status score of 0-1, and non-progressing disease after four to six cycles of standard chemotherapy (with pemetrexed 500 mg/m plus platinum [cisplatin 75 mg/m or carboplatin area under the curve of 5]) were recruited from four centres in Belgium, France, and The Netherlands.

Article Synopsis
  • The study looks at how to manage the space in Intensive Care Units (ICUs) effectively so that seriously ill patients get the best care possible.
  • Researchers created a special computer model to see how different ICU designs, one for dedicated care and one for mixed care, perform in different situations.
  • Their findings showed that the non-dedicated ICU design used resources better and could lead to fewer patients being turned away or having to be rescheduled than a dedicated ICU design.

Background: Emergency Reflex Action Drills (ERADs) are meant to decrease stress-associated cognitive demand in high urgency situations. The aim of this study was to develop and test an ERAD for witnessed traumatic cardiac arrest (TCA), an event in which potentially reversible causes need to be systematically addressed and treated in a short period of time. We hypothesize that this ERAD (the TCA-Drill) helps ground Emergency Medical Services (EMS) nurses in overcoming performance decline during this specific high-pressure situation.

Is a wandering mind a novelty-seeking mind? The curious case of incubation.

Behav Brain Sci

May 2024

Department of Communication and Cognition, Tilburg School of Humanities and Digital Sciences, Tilburg University, Tilburg, The

The Novelty-Seeking Model can explain incubation's effect on creativity by assuming an adaptive decision threshold. During an impasse, the threshold for novelty becomes too high and biased to previous neural activity, hindering progress. Incubation "resets" this threshold through attentional decoupling, allowing for spontaneous ideas to emerge from subsequent mind wandering or other activities that attract attention, facilitating progress.
