OTP, CD44, and Ki-67: A Prognostic Marker Panel for Relapse-Free Survival in Patients with Surgically Resected Pulmonary Carcinoid.

Mod Pathol

December 2024

Department of Pathology, GROW School for Oncology and Reproduction, Maastricht University Medical Centre, Maastricht, The Netherlands; Department of Pathology and Clinical Bioinformatics, Erasmus MC, Rotterdam, The Netherlands. Electronic address:

Although most patients with pulmonary carcinoid (PC) can be cured by surgery, relapse may occur until 15 years after resection in up to 10% of patients. This is unpredictable at the outset, necessitating extensive follow-up (FU). We sought to determine whether an immunohistochemical marker panel (OTP, CD44, and Ki-67) could better indicate relapse-free survival (RFS) and increase uniformity among pathologists regarding carcinoid classification.

Article Synopsis
  • CDK4/6 inhibitors combined with endocrine therapy improve outcomes for patients with hormone-receptor positive, HER2-negative advanced breast cancer, but evidence comparing first-line and second-line use is limited.
  • The phase 3 SONIA trial involved 1,050 patients and showed no significant overall benefit for using CDK4/6 inhibitors first-line compared to second-line (31.0 vs. 26.8 months median progression-free survival).
  • Although first-line treatment led to longer duration of CDK4/6 therapy and more severe side effects, the quality of life was similar for both treatment timing, questioning the necessity for first-line CDK4/6 inhibitor usage in all cases.

Measurement-based care (MBC), the use of routine assessment to guide clinical decision-making, has the potential to significantly enhance the quality of mental health services for youth by improving the detection and prevention of harm. Concerns exist, however, that widespread efforts to implement MBC may have a negative impact on youth mental health care. We explore both perspectives by describing how MBC can be leveraged as a tool to detect and prevent harmful treatment in youth and how misapplication of MBC also has the potential to cause harm.

Introduction: Hysterosalpingography (HSG) and hysterosalpingo-foam sonography (HyFoSy) are commonly used tubal patency tests during the fertility work-up. Besides its diagnostic purpose, HSG with oil-based contrast can also be applied for its fertility-enhancing effect, by tubal flushing. HyFoSy is considered as less painful compared with HSG, it lacks exposure to iodinated contrast medium and ionising radiation.

Sharing pathology data is critical for educational and scientific purposes. Since most pharmaceutical or (agro)chemical companies outsource nonclinical safety assessment studies to contract research organizations (CROs), the pathology data of those studies are not owned by the investigator but is the legal property of the respective company sponsoring the work. Although some companies have installed policies that govern sharing of pathology data, many companies generally do not allow the external use of data by either the CRO-based study pathologist or the sponsor pathologist.

Background: The fecal immunochemical test for hemoglobin (FIT) is now a widely used non-invasive test in population-based organized screening programs for colorectal neoplasia. The positivity thresholds of tests currently in use are based on the fecal hemoglobin concentration (f-Hb), but the rationale for the adopted thresholds are not well documented. To understand current global usage of FIT in screening programs we conducted an international survey of the brands of FIT used, the f-Hb positivity threshold applied and the rationale for the choice.
