Article Synopsis
  • In a study about endometrial cancer, doctors looked at how preoperative health issues like anemia (low red blood cells), thrombocytosis (high platelets), and leucocytosis (high white blood cells) affect patient survival and treatment response.
  • They checked medical data from 894 patients from 10 hospitals over about 4.5 years and found that anemia and thrombocytosis linked to higher risk levels for the disease.
  • The results showed that anemia made survival rates worse, especially for patients getting radiation therapy, meaning those with anemia had a harder time fighting the cancer.

Background: To assess the causal relationship between a medicinal product and a reported event, relevant information needs to be present. Information elements for assessing cases of exposure to medicinal products during pregnancy were predefined and used in a new tool to assess the quality of information. However, the extent in which the presence or absence of these predefined information elements is associated with the overall clinical quality of these cases, as evaluated by pharmacovigilance experts, remains uncertain.

Article Synopsis
  • Gastrointestinal angiodysplasias are vascular abnormalities that can cause severe anemia requiring frequent blood transfusions, and octreotide has been suggested to help reduce rebleeding rates in patients.
  • A multicenter, randomized controlled trial compared the effectiveness of octreotide (40 mg every 28 days) to standard care in reducing transfusion requirements over one year for patients with this condition.
  • Results showed that patients treated with octreotide required significantly fewer transfusion units (11.0) compared to those receiving standard care (21.2), indicating that octreotide effectively reduces the need for transfusions in these patients.

Objectives: ICU survivors often suffer from long-lasting physical, mental, and cognitive health problems after hospital discharge. As several interventions that treat or prevent these problems already start during ICU stay, patients at high risk should be identified early. This study aimed to develop a model for early prediction of post-ICU health problems within 48 hours after ICU admission.

Article Synopsis
  • A study was conducted to compare the revision rates of posterior-stabilized (PS) versus posterior cruciate-retaining (CR) total knee replacements (TKR) specifically in uncemented procedures, using data from the Dutch arthroplasty register involving over 12,000 cases from 2007 to 2022.
  • The analysis revealed that uncemented PS TKRs had significantly higher 10-year revision rates for any reason (6.5%) and for aseptic loosening (3.9%) compared to CR TKRs (4.2% and 1.4%, respectively).
  • The findings indicate that patients with uncemented PS implants are 1.4 times more likely to require revision and

Background And Aims: Observational data indicate that diets rich in fruits and vegetables have a positive effect on inflammatory status, improve metabolic resilience and may protect against the development of non-communicable diseases. Nevertheless, experimental evidence demonstrating a causal relationship between nutrient intake (especially whole foods) and changes in metabolic health is scarce. This study investigated the pleiotropic effects of sulforaphane from broccoli sprouts, compared to pea sprouts, on biomarkers of endothelial function, inflammation and metabolic stress in healthy participants subjected to a standardized caloric challenge.

Background: Guidelines are inconclusive on whether contrast-enhanced MRI using gadoxetic acid and diffusion-weighted imaging should be added routinely to CT in the investigation of patients with colorectal liver metastases who are scheduled for curative liver resection or thermal ablation, or both. Although contrast-enhanced MRI is reportedly superior than contrast-enhanced CT in the detection and characterisation of colorectal liver metastases, its effect on clinical patient management is unknown. We aimed to assess the clinical effect of an additional liver contrast-enhanced MRI on local treatment plan in patients with colorectal liver metastases amenable to local treatment, based on contrast-enhanced CT.
