Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) has been shown to be linked to inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) due to established risk factors such as obesity, age, and type 2 diabetes in numerous studies. However, alternative research suggests that factors related to IBD, such as disease activity, duration, and drug-induced toxicity, can contribute to NAFLD. Recent research findings suggest IBD relapses are correlated with dysbiosis, mucosal damage, and an increase in cytokines.

Introduction: Technical advances and the increasing role of interdisciplinary decision-making may warrant formal definitions of expertise in surgical neuro-oncology.
Research Question: The EANS Neuro-oncology Section felt that a survey detailing the European neurosurgical perspective on the concept of expertise in surgical neuro-oncology might be helpful.
Material And Methods: The EANS Neuro-oncology Section panel developed an online survey asking questions regarding criteria for expertise in neuro-oncological surgery and sent it to all individual EANS members.

Obesity or overweight raises the risk of developing 13 types of cancer, representing 40% of all cancers diagnosed in the United States annually. Given the ongoing debate surrounding the impact of metabolically healthy obesity (MHO) on cardiovascular outcomes, it is crucial to comprehend the incidence of Major Adverse Cardiovascular and Cerebrovascular Events (MACCEs) and the influence of MHO on these outcomes in cancer patients. Data of hospitalized cancer patients with and without obesity were analyzed from the National Inpatient Sample 2016-2020.

Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of mortality, disproportionately affecting low-income and low-middle-income countries (LICs/LMICs). Despite this, cardiology research commonly comes from affluent regions. This study assessed the authorship trends from LICs/LMICs in cardiology journals listed in PubMed from 2000 to 2022.

Introduction: We aimed to investigate the performance of several neuroimaging markers provided by perfusion imaging of Acute Ischemic Stroke (AIS) patients with large vessel occlusion (LVO) in order to predict clinical outcomes following reperfusion treatments.
Methods: We prospectively evaluated consecutive AIS patients with LVO who were treated with reperfusion therapies, during a six-year period. In order to compare patients with good (mRS scores 0-2) and poor (mRS scores 3-6) functional outcomes, data regarding clinical characteristics, the Alberta Stroke Programme Early Computed Tomography Score (ASPECTS) based on unenhanced computed tomography (CT), CT angiography collateral status and perfusion parameters including ischemic core, hypoperfusion volume, mismatch volume between core and penumbra, Tmax > 10 s volume, CBV index and the Hypoperfusion Index Ratio (HIR) were assessed.

Introduction: To date, lung cancer is one of the most lethal diagnoses worldwide. A variety of lung cancer treatments and modalities are available, which are generally presented during the patient and doctor consultation. The implementation of decision tools to facilitate patient's decision-making and the management of their healthcare process during medical consultation is fundamental.

Diaphragmatic dysfunction can arise from various factors, and Guillain-Barre syndrome, characterized by acute inflammatory polyradiculoneuropathy, is one such cause that may result in respiratory failure due to diaphragmatic paralysis. Prompt recognition and timely intervention, including airway protection and addressing the underlying pathology, are crucial for achieving optimal patient outcomes. Point-of-care ultrasound, specifically utilizing the M-mode function, can be employed for individuals displaying symptoms of diaphragmatic paralysis.

Recent randomized clinical trials demonstrated that treatment with sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 inhibitors (SGLT2is) reduces the risk of cardiac mortality due to sudden cardiac death and progressive pump failure in patients with heart failure (HF). Mechanisms underlying the potential anti-arrhythmic effects of SGLT2is are not well understood. We aimed to examine the effect of SGLT2i treatment on the frontal-plane QRS-T (f[QRS-T]) angle, a novel marker of myocardial repolarization and an independent predictor of adverse cardiac outcomes.

Background: Obesity is a well-established risk factor for cancer. Laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG) is established as a safe procedure providing accelerated weight loss and comorbidity improvement or remission. Additionally, it is approved as a bridging procedure for various non-oncologic surgeries, with very limited data for oncologic procedures.

Objectives: The aim of this study was to study the prevalence of exocrine pancreas insufficiency (EPI) at a population level and the subsequent risk of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC).
Materials And Methods: Using TriNetX (a database of over 79 million US residents), we included patients ≥18 years with EPI (identified via ICD-10 codes) and continuous follow-up from 2016-2022. Patients with prior pancreas resection and PDAC before an EPI diagnosis were excluded.

Background: Recent guidelines suggest that antiplatelet therapy (APT) is the standard of care in the absence of long-term oral anticoagulation (OAC) indications in patients post-transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR). The superiority of one method over the other remains controversial.
Materials And Methods: Several databases, including MEDLINE, Google Scholar, and EMBASE, were electronically searched.

Background: Sex differences in epilepsy have been described in prevalence, seizure propensity and response to treatment. Therefore, taking into account sex-based differences in epilepsy is important for both diagnostic purposes and therapeutic considerations. However, little is known about sex differences in adverse effects of antiseizure medications (ASMs).

Psoriasis continues to affect a large percentage of patients worldwide and strongly appears to be a systematic disease. Efforts are being made to understand its etiology, which have led to research extended to genomic analysis with a focus on the role of pro-inflammatory cytokines, which play a major role in the pathogenesis of the disease. Plasma proteomic analysis in various diseases has provided promising results for choosing the right treatment for psoriasis, suggesting that it could play a key role in the prevention, prognosis, and treatment of the disease by individualizing treatment choices based on the proteomic profile of each patient.

Background: The literature on endovascular treatment (EVT) for large-vessel occlusion (LVO) acute ischaemic stroke (AIS) has been rapidly increasing after the publication of positive randomized-controlled clinical trials (RCTs) and a plethora of systematic reviews (SRs) showing benefit compared to best medical therapy (BMT) for LVO.
Objectives: An overview of SRs (umbrella review) and meta-analysis of primary RCTs were performed to summarize the literature and present efficacy and safety of EVT.
Design And Methods: MEDLINE Pubmed, Embase and Epistemonikos databases were searched from January 2015 until 15 October 2023.

Chemotherapy-induced cardiac dysfunction (CIC) is a significant and concerning complication observed among cancer patients. Despite the demonstrated cardioprotective benefits of statins in various cardiovascular diseases, their effectiveness in mitigating CIC remains uncertain. This meta-analysis aims to comprehensively evaluate the potential cardioprotective role of statins in patients with CIC.
