Predicting Healthcare-associated Infections: are Point of Prevalence Surveys data useful?

Introduction: Since 2012, the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) promotes a point prevalence survey (PPS) of HAIs in European acute care hospitals. Through a retrospective analysis of 2012, 2015 and 2017 PPS of HAIs performed in a tertiary academic hospital in Italy, we developed a model to predict the risk of HAI.

Methods: Following ECDC protocol we surveyed 1382 patients across three years.

Rapid detection of Legionella spp in water samples by ScanVIT method: comparison of acid vs heat treatment.

Background: A rapid detection of Legionella bacteria in water samples is crucial to minimize the risk of acquiring infections, especially in health care facilities. Different detection methods and different decontamination procedures have been reported to affect the recovery of Legionella spp. Our goal was to test the recovery of Legionella pneumophila and Legionella non-pneumophila species using a kit based on non-specific and species-specific probes to treat water samples after two different decontamination procedures.

A mobile device reducing airborne particulate can improve air quality.

Surgical site infections are the second major cause of hospital acquired infections, accounting for a large part of overall annual medical costs. Airborne particulate is known to be a potential carrier of pathogenic bacteria. We assessed a mobile air particle filter unit for improvement of air quality in an operating room (OR).

Association between air changes and airborne microbial contamination in operating rooms.

Background: Control of airborne microbial contamination is important in operating rooms (ORs). To keep airborne contamination low, guidelines should highlight the importance of air turnover. The aims of the study were: (1) to verify the association between air turnover and airborne contamination in ORs; and (2) to identify a statistical relationship between air turnover and airborne microbial contamination.

Public Health since the beginning: Neonatal incubators safety in a clinical setting.

Background: The role of environmental cleaning as an effective measure to contain the diffusion of Healthcare Associated Infections (HAIs) has already been demonstrated. Among medical devices, neonatal incubators have been recognized as a source of pathogens involved in the spread of HAIs. Aim of the study was to assess the efficacy of a disinfection protocol for neonatal incubators.

Use of a systematic risk analysis method (FMECA) to improve quality in a clinical laboratory procedure.

Background: Risk management is a set of actions to recognize or identify risks, errors and their consequences and to take the steps to counter it. The aim of our study was to apply FMECA (Failure Mode, Effects and Criticality Analysis) to the Activated Protein C resistance (APCR) test in order to detect and avoid mistakes in this process.
