This study investigates the presence of a hollow recess at the midline undersurface of tumors primarily localized within the third ventricle (3V). This structure was originally identified by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of 6 3V craniopharyngiomas (CPs) from our series and was then methodically scrutinized in autopsy studies (n = 1091) and MRI scans (n = 5558) of CPs and in 1251 3V tumors reported in the medical literature from 1839 to 2021. A recess at the tumor base was identified in 110 CPs, 95 with a verified papillary histology (papillary craniopharyngioma [PCP]) and 15 with typical gross appearance of PCP.

Cancer incidence in the world is predicted to increase in the next decade. While progress has been in diagnosis and treatment, much still remains to be done to improve cancer pain therapy, mainly in underserved communities in low-income countries. To determine knowledge, beliefs, and barriers regarding pain management in both high- and low-income countries (according to the WHO classification); and to learn about ways to improve the current state of affairs.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to understand how inflammation affects the response to ocrelizumab treatment in patients with primary-progressive multiple sclerosis (PPMS).
  • Researchers followed 69 patients, looking at those with and without gadolinium-enhancing lesions on MRI, finding that over 60% achieved "no evidence of disease activity" (NEDA) after one year.
  • The results suggested that in patients with Gd+ lesions, a low rate of inflammatory B cells and decreased serum neurofilament levels were significant, while in Gd- patients, NEDA was associated with changes in other immune cells and increased serum IgA levels.

Objective: To study the impact of neoadjuvant therapies on postoperative complications and mortality among non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients subjected to anatomic lung resection and included in the Spanish cohort of the video-assisted thoracic surgery (GE-VATS) multicenter database.

Methods: The study included a total of 3085 patients from 33 centers between December 2016 and March 2018. We performed a comparative analysis of the complications and mortality in patients who received neoadjuvant therapies (n = 263) versus those who did not (n = 2822).

Coping with COVID: risk and resilience factors for mental health in a German representative panel study.

Psychol Med

July 2023

Department of Psychiatry and Neurosciences - CCM, Research Division of Mind and Brain, Charité - Universitätsmedizin Berlin, Corporate Member of Freie Universität Berlin and Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, Charitéplatz 1, 10117 Berlin, Germany.

Background: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic might affect mental health. Data from population-representative panel surveys with multiple waves including pre-COVID data investigating risk and protective factors are still rare.

Methods: In a stratified random sample of the German household population ( = 6684), we conducted survey-weighted multiple linear regressions to determine the association of various psychological risk and protective factors assessed between 2015 and 2020 with changes in psychological distress [(PD; measured via Patient Health Questionnaire for Depression and Anxiety (PHQ-4)] from pre-pandemic (average of 2016 and 2019) to peri-pandemic (both 2020 and 2021) time points.

Background: Oncological outcomes of self-expanding metallic stent used as a bridge to surgery in potential curative patients with left-sided colonic cancer obstruction remain unclear. The aim of this study was to investigate perioperative and mid-term oncological outcomes of 2 of the currently most commonly performed treatments in left-sided colonic cancer obstruction.

Methods: This is a retrospective multicenter study including patients with left-sided colonic cancer obstruction treated with curative intent between 2013 and 2017.

Objective: Papillary craniopharyngiomas (PCPs) represent a rare histological type of craniopharyngiomas (CPs) usually involving the hypothalamus. This study systematically analyzes the clinical-anatomical correlation between tumor topography and symptoms related to hypothalamic dysfunction in the largest series of PCPs ever gathered.

Methods: From 5,346 CP reports published from 1856 to 2021, we selected 350 well-described cases of the squamous-papillary type.

Clinical Relevance of Novel Polymorphisms in the Dihydropyrimidine Dehydrogenase () Gene in Patients with Severe Fluoropyrimidine Toxicity: A Spanish Case-Control Study.

Pharmaceutics

November 2021

Clinical Pharmacology Department, La Princesa University Hospital, Instituto Teófilo Hernando, Instituto de Investigación Sanitaria La Princesa (IP), Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (UAM), 28029 Madrid, Spain.

Among cancer patients treated with fluoropyrimidines, 10-40% develop severe toxicity. Polymorphism of the dihydropyrimidine dehydrogenase () gene may reduce DPD function, the main enzyme responsible for the metabolism of fluoropyrimidines. This leads to drug accumulation and to an increased risk of toxicity.

Presence of SARS-CoV-2 RNA in serum (viremia) of COVID-19 patients has been related to poor prognosis and death. The aim of this study was to evaluate both the ability to detect viremia in COVID-19 patients of two commercial reverse real-time-PCR (rRT-PCR) tests, Cobas® and TaqPath™, comparing them with a gold standard method, and their implementation in microbiology laboratories. This retrospective cohort study included 303 adult patients (203 diagnosed with COVID-19 and 100 non-COVID-19 patients) admitted to a tertiary hospital, with at least one serum sample collected within the first 48 h from admission.

To assess patient perspective and professional practice of intraarticular therapies (IATs) across Europe, an expert international multidisciplinary panel designed two open web-based surveys: one targeting people who had experienced at least two IATs (44 items); and one targeting health care providers (HCPs) (160 items). Surveys were disseminated via patient and professional associations and social media. A descriptive analysis was performed.

Variants in , , and Alter Quetiapine Pharmacokinetics.

Pharmaceutics

September 2021

Clinical Pharmacology Department, La Princesa University Hospital, Instituto Teófilo Hernando, Instituto de Investigación Sanitaria La Princesa (IP), Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (UAM), 28029 Madrid, Spain.

Article Synopsis
  • Quetiapine is an atypical antipsychotic used primarily for schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, and the study aimed to explore how genetic variations impact its metabolism and potential side effects.
  • 49 healthy participants were included in two clinical trials, where researchers analyzed 80 genetic variants from 19 pharmacogenes, particularly those related to the cytochrome P450 enzyme system.
  • Key findings showed that specific genetic variants (like the rs13306278 T allele) were linked to increased quetiapine exposure and that certain enzymes (CYP3A5 and possibly CYP2B6) significantly influence its metabolism, suggesting the need for more research to validate these results.

Purpose: Failed back surgery syndrome (FBSS) causes disability and lowers health-related quality of life (HRQoL) for patients. Many patients become refractory to conventional medical management (CMM) and spinal cord stimulation (SCS) is advised. However, comparative cost-effectiveness research of both clinical approaches still lacks further evidence.

Anecdotal evidence suggests that community infection control measures during the COVID-19 outbreak have modified the number and natural history of acute surgical inflammatory processes (ASIP-appendicitis, cholecystitis, diverticulitis and perianal abscesses) admissions. This study aims to evaluate the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the presentation and treatment ASIP and quantify the effect of COVID-19 infection on the outcomes of ASIP patients. This was a multicentre, comparative study, whereby ASIP cases from 2019, 2020 and 2021 (March 14th to May 2nd) were analyzed.
