: In patients with biliary atresia (BA), hepatoportoenterostomy (HPE) is still a valuable therapeutic tool for prolonged survival or a safer transition to liver transplantation. The main focus today is towards efficient screening programs, a faster diagnostic, and prompt treatment. However, the limited information on BA pathophysiology makes valuable any experience in disease management.

Migraine or Acute Angle Closure?

Rom J Ophthalmol

August 2021

Department of Ophthalmology, County Emergency Hospital Cluj-Napoca, Cluj, Romania.

This paper aimed to present a relatively frequent misinterpretation of a migraine with visual aura. Sometimes, patients with aura and migraine are referred to the ophthalmologic unit with the diagnosis of acute angle closure attack. Thus, we discussed the way an ophthalmologist could make a difference between these two entities.

Background And Aims: The fully-covered, lumen apposing metal stents are designed for one step placement, facilitating the direct endoscopic necrosectomy into the walled-off pancreatic necrosis. However, the prediction of the number of necrosectomy sessions in these patients is not known. This study evaluated the association between the proportion of solid necrotic material inside walled-off necrosis, as assessed during the endosonography placement of a lumen apposing metal stent, and the number of necrosectomies subsequently required.

Mass Spectrometry-Based Omics for the Characterization of Triple-Negative Breast Cancer Bio-Signature.

J Pers Med

December 2020

Department of Proteomics and Metabolomics, Research Center for Advanced Medicine-MedFuture, "Iuliu Hațieganu" University of Medicine and Pharmacy, Louis Pasteur Street 4-6, 400349 Cluj-Napoca, Romania.

Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) represents an unmet medical need due to a high rate of metastatic occurrence and poor overall survival, pathology aggressiveness, heterogeneous clinical behavior and limited cytotoxic chemotherapy options available because of the absence of targetable receptors. The current standard of care in TNBC is represented by chemotherapy and surgery associated with low overall survival and high relapse rates. Hopes of overcoming current limited and unspecific approaches of TNBC therapy lie in studying the metabolic rewiring of these types of breast cancer, thus understanding the mechanisms involved in the occurrence and progression of the disease.

The rapid spread of SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) since December 2019 forced Intensive Care Units to face high numbers of patients admitted simultaneously with limited resources. COVID-19 critically ill patients, especially those on mechanical ventilators, demand special attention as they can develop potential complications with critical hemodynamic and respiratory consequences. Point of Care Ultrasound (POCUS) might have important roles in assessing the critically ill SARS-CoV-2 patient.

Introduction: The aim of the present study is to evaluate the presence of biofilms in patients with chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS), with or without nasal polyps, and their relationship to eosinophils and plasma cells. We compared the results with those obtained in nonCRS patients.

Methods: A total of 50 patients were included in the study, 30 CRSwNP patients, 10 CRSsNP cases and 10 control patients who were operated for deviated septum.

Aims: Vertebral lesions, either primary or more frequently metastasis, are difficult targets for percutaneous guided biopsies and surgical biopsies and are associated with greater risks of complications. We investigated the feasibility of endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) fine needle aspiration (FNA) biopsy in the assessment of vertebral osteolytic tumors as an alternative to CT guided biopsy which is the technique currently used.

Material And Methods: Four patients with osteolytic tumors of the vertebral bodies identified by imaging methods (CT or MRI) - 3 patients, and one with a tumor detected primarily during EUS procedure were included in order to evaluate the feasibility of the procedure.

Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) remains a problem worldwide due to its rapid progression and low rate of response to treatment. The heterogeneity of these tumors observed in histopathology exam but also in the mutational status and gene expression pattern makes this malignancy difficult to treat in clinic. The present study investigated the effect of miR-21 and let-7 family members as prognostic biomarkers in NSCLC patients based on the results published in different studies regarding this subject until March 2019.

Levodopa-carbidopa intestinal gel (LCIG) is a method of continuous administration of levodopa - the standard treatment in Parkinson disease (PD, a neurodegenerative disorder characterized by resting tremor, rigidity, gait impairment, and bradykinesia), thought to reduce the short-life and pulsatile problems of oral administration. We aimed to study the effects of Levodopa-Carbidopa therapy in 2 separate groups: one with intrajejunal administration of Levodopa-Carbidopa gel and the second with oral therapy. We performed an observational retrospective Romanian cohort study on 61 patients diagnosed with PD patients, with Hoehn and Jahr 3 and 4 stages, recruited from a single regional tertiary center in Cluj-Napoca, Romania, between 2009 and 2019.

Background: Dentists are susceptible to musculoskeletal disorders due to prolonged static postures during dental treatments. Using a magnification tool like dental operating microscope (DOM) or the dental loupes may correct the operator's posture. Up until now, few studies have focused on preclinical dental students' posture when working with the DOM, while most of them have focused on the loupes.

The accurate localization of small tumors of the digestive tract is of paramount importance in surgical oncology because it dictates the limits of resection and the extent of lymph node dissection. In this view, we have designed and fabricated a highly efficient sensing laparoscopic instrument focused on precise non-invasive extralumenal intraoperative detection of small colorectal or gastric tumors. The equipment is fully adapted for laparoscopic surgery and consists of an inductive proximity sensor encapsulated into a watertight stainless-steel case that is connected to an electronic functional block dimensionally scaled-down by the desired form and size for optimal surgical manipulation.

Purpose: Breast cancer presents one of the highest rates of prevalence around the world. Despite this, the current breast cancer therapy is characterized by significant side effects and high risk of recurrence. The present work aimed to develop a new therapeutic strategy that may improve the current breast cancer therapy by developing a heat-sensitive liposomal nano-platform suitable to incorporate both anti-tumor betulinic acid (BA) compound and magnetic iron nanoparticles (MIONPs), in order to address both remote drug release and hyperthermia-inducing features.

Purpose: Multiple primary neoplasms (MPN) have a growing impact in the outcome of oncological patients given the rising incidence of these entities in daily practice. The early diagnosis of secondary tumors could translate into better survival of patients with MPN. The final objective of this study was the elaboration of a follow-up protocol for oncological patients at risk of developing multiple primary neoplasms.

Background/aims: Down syndrome associated disorders are caused by a complex genetic context where trisomy 21 is a central component in relation to other changes involving epigenetic regulators and signaling molecules. This unique genetic context is responsible for the predisposition of people with Down syndrome to acute leukemia. Although, the research in this field has discovered some important pathogenic keys, the exact mechanism of this predisposition is not known.

(1) Background: The approach of bleeding complications in patients treated with non-vitamin K oral anticoagulants (NOACs) represents an important issue in clinical practice. Both dabigatran and apixaban are substrates for P-glycoprotein and, therefore, gene variations may be useful in individualizing NOACs treatment, especially in high-risk patients. (2) Methods: rs1045642 and rs4148738 were determined in 218 atrial fibrillation patients treated with dabigatran or apixaban (70.
