One of the challenges to the management of severe asthma is the poor therapeutic response to treatment with glucocorticosteroids. Chitosan-based nanofibers (CS-NFs) are excellent artificial extracellular matrices (ECMs) due to the resemblance of CS with the glycosaminoglycans of the natural ECMs. Despite this excellent feature, the poor electrospinnability and mechanical properties of CS are responsible for important limitations in respect to its biomedical applications. To improve the CS's physico-chemical properties, new bioactive and biomimetic CS-NFs were formulated with polyethylene oxide (PEO), having incorporated different active components (ACs) with important beneficial effects for healing.

We investigated the influence of a solvent's composition on the stability of desorbed and multiply charged RNAse S ions by analyzing the non-covalent complex's gas-phase dissociation processes. RNAse S was dissolved in electrospray ionization-compatible buffers with either increasing organic co-solvent content or different pHs. The direct transition of all the ions and the evaporation of the solvent from all the in-solution components of RNAse S under the respective in-solution conditions by electrospray ionization was followed by a collision-induced dissociation of the surviving non-covalent RNAse S complex ions.

Wound dressings under the form of films constituted of modified alginate (methacrylated alginate - AlgMA) versus a gelatine derivative containing norbornene functionalities (GelNB) are developed and evaluated for their moisturizing effects, followed by further in vivo testing to assay their wound healing potential. The gel fraction results shows that AlgMA and GelNB films displayed a high crosslinking efficiency while the swelling assay reveals a stronger water uptake capacity for AlgMA films compared to GelNB and to commercial dressing AquacelAg, used as positive control. Referring to the in vivo wound healing effect, the GelNB films not only exhibit proper healing properties, yet is higher to the AquacelAg, while the AlgMA films exhibit similar wound healing effect as the positive control.

World Health Organization estimates that 30-50% of cancers are preventable by healthy lifestyle choices, early detection and adequate therapy. When the conventional therapeutic strategies are still regulated by the lack of selectivity, multidrug resistance and severe toxic side effects, nanotechnology grants a new frontier for cancer management since it targets cancer cells and spares healthy tissues. This review highlights recent studies using biotin molecule combined with functional nanomaterials used in biomedical applications, with a particular attention on biotinylated chitosan-based nanosystems.

Starting from indomethacin (IND), one of the most prescribed non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), new nitric oxide-releasing indomethacin derivatives with 1,3,4-oxadiazole-2-thiol scaffold (NO-IND-OXDs, ) have been developed as a safer and more efficient multitarget therapeutic strategy. The successful synthesis of designed compounds (intermediaries and finals) was proved by complete spectroscopic analyses. A considerable interest in cancer research is represented by the development of magnetic nanoparticles based on biofunctionalized polymers for controlled-release systems of hydrophobic chemotherapeutic drugs targeted only to the tumor sites, without affecting normal cells. The objective of the paper is to present the synthesis and in vitro evaluation of the nanocomposites that include a magnetic core able to direct the systems to the target, a polymeric surface shell that provides stabilization and multi-functionality, a chemotherapeutic agent, Paclitaxel (PTX), and a biotin tumor recognition layer. To our best knowledge, there are no studies concerning development of magnetic nanoparticles obtained by partial oxidation, based on biotinylated -palmitoyl chitosan loaded with PTX.

Over the last decade, an important challenge in nanomedicine imaging has been the work to design multifunctional agents that can be detected by single and/or multimodal techniques. Among the broad spectrum of nanoscale materials being investigated for imaging use, iron oxide nanoparticles have gained significant attention due to their intrinsic magnetic properties, low toxicity, large magnetic moments, superparamagnetic behaviour and large surface area-the latter being a particular advantage in its conjunction with specific moieties, dye molecules, and imaging probes. Tracers-based nanoparticles are promising candidates, since they combine synergistic advantages for non-invasive, highly sensitive, high-resolution, and quantitative imaging on different modalities.

Diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) is a lethal acute hyperglycemic complication of diabetes mellitus (DM) and it represents the initial manifestation of DM in about 15-20% of cases in adults and about 30-40% of cases in children. Postmortem diagnosis of DKA can only be made by applying thanatochemistry. Biochemistry applied postmortem is viewed with skepticism by many practitioners in the forensic field, completely lacking in many forensic services around the world, and especially in the national ones.

In this study we present design and synthesis of nineteen new nitric oxide-releasing indomethacin derivatives with 1,3-thiazolidine-4-one scaffold (NO-IND-TZDs) (6a-s), as a new safer and efficient multi-targets strategy for inflammatory diseases. The chemical structure of all synthesized derivatives (intermediaries and finals) was proved by NMR and mass spectroscopic analysis. In order to study the selectivity of NO-IND-TZDs for COX isoenzymes (COX-1 and COX-2) a molecular docking study was performed using AutoDock 4.

In recent decades, drug delivery systems (DDSs) based on nanotechnology have been attracting substantial interest in the pharmaceutical field, especially those developed based on natural polymers such as chitosan, cellulose, starch, collagen, gelatin, alginate and elastin. Nanomaterials based on chitosan (CS) or chitosan derivatives are broadly investigated as promising nanocarriers due to their biodegradability, good biocompatibility, non-toxicity, low immunogenicity, great versatility and beneficial biological effects. CS, either alone or as composites, are suitable substrates in the fabrication of different types of products like hydrogels, membranes, beads, porous foams, nanoparticles, in-situ gel, microparticles, sponges and nanofibers/scaffolds.

Natural compounds have been used as wound-healing promoters and are also present in today's clinical proceedings. In this research, different natural active components such as propolis, Manuka honey, insulin, L-arginine, and infusion were included into hyaluronic acid/poly(ethylene)oxide-based electrospun nanofiber membranes to design innovative wound-dressing biomaterials. Morphology and average fiber diameter were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy.

In forensic medicine, the postmortem determination of glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) helps identify undiagnosed cases of diabetes or cases with uncontrolled glycemic status. In order to contribute to the solidification of thanatochemistry, both globally and especially nationally, we aimed to determine this biomarker postmortem, for the first time in our institution, in order to identify undiagnosed pre-mortem diabetics, as well as those with inadequate glycemic control. Our research consisted of analyzing a total number of 180 HbA1c values, 90 determinations from the peripheral blood and 90 from the central blood.

The factors regulating cellular identity are critical for understanding the transition from health to disease and responses to therapies. Recent literature suggests that autophagy compromise may cause opposite effects in different contexts by either activating or inhibiting YAP/TAZ co-transcriptional regulators of the Hippo pathway via unrelated mechanisms. Here, we confirm that autophagy perturbation in different cell types can cause opposite responses in growth-promoting oncogenic YAP/TAZ transcriptional signalling.

The aim of this study was to assess the psycho-emotional impact and the adjustment degree of Romanian general practitioners (GPs) in the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic context. With a cross-sectional design, the study included 677 GPs to whom a validated questionnaire based on different items targeting three factors was sent: burden of prevention, presence of stress symptoms, and adjustment to pandemic. The burden of prevention and the adjustment effort to the pandemic were felt significantly more by female doctors and by GPs working in associated offices.
