Objective: Bipolar Disorder (BD) is a severe mental illness associated with high rates of general medical comorbidity, reduced life expectancy, and premature mortality. Although BD has been associated with high medical hospitalization, the factors that contribute to this risk remain largely unexplored. We used baseline medical and psychiatric records to develop a supervised machine learning model to predict general medical admissions after discharge from psychiatric hospitalization.

Heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) is rapidly growing as the most common form of heart failure. Among HFpEF phenotypes, the cardiometabolic/obese HFpEF - HFpEF driven by cardiometabolic alterations - emerges as one of the most prevalent forms of this syndrome and the one on which recent therapeutic success have been made. Indeed, pharmacological approaches with sodium-glucose cotransporter type 2 inhibitors (SGLT2i) and glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RA) have proved to be effective due to metabolic protective effects.

  • The Barcelona Clinic Liver Cancer (BCLC) staging system is crucial for treating hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC); recent updates allow for BCLC stage B patients to consider liver transplantation, while hepatectomy is now discouraged.
  • A systematic review analyzed 31 studies involving 3163 patients to compare survival rates, postoperative complications, and patient selection for liver resection versus transplantation in BCLC stage B patients.
  • Results showed that while resection had a 50-month survival and a 15-month recurrence-free period, data on transplantation was limited, with only one study reporting on it, indicating the need for more research in this area.

In patients at high cardiovascular risk, a low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) reduction of ≥50% from baseline and an LDL-C goal of <70 mg/dL (or <55 mg/dL in very high-risk patients) are recommended. Multiple registry and retrospective studies have shown that patients with high atherosclerotic cardiovascular risk often do not reach the targets defined by the European Society of Cardiology guidelines as a result of suboptimal management of LDL-C. Here, we report the data on lipid-lowering therapy and lipid targets from the Survey on Risk FactOrs and CardiovascuLar secondary prEvention and drug strategieS (SOFOCLES), an observational, prospective study designed to collect data on patients with ischemic heart disease treated at cardiac outpatient clinics across the Italian national territory.

Background: It is unclear whether targeted monitoring of acute adrenal insufficiency (AI) related adverse events (AE) such as sick day episodes (SDEs) and hospitalization rate in congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH) is associated with a change in the occurrence of these events.

Aim: Study temporal trends of AI related AE in the I-CAH Registry.

Methods: In 2022, data on the occurrence of AI-related AE in children aged <18 years with 21-hydroxylase deficiency CAH were compared to data collected in 2019.

Purpose: Endocrine-disrupting compounds, including bisphenol A (BPA), may promote obesity influencing basal metabolic rate and shifting metabolism towards energy storage. The role of 1,25‑Dihydroxyvitamin D3 (VitD) in counteracting adipogenesis is still a matter of debate. Thus, the current study aims to investigate whether and how VitD exposure during adipogenesis could prevent the pro-adipogenic effect of BPA in two adipocyte models, mouse 3T3-L1 cell line and human adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells (hAMSC).

Neoplastic transformation reprograms tumor and surrounding host cell metabolism, increasing nutrient consumption and depletion in the tumor microenvironment. Tumors uptake nutrients from neighboring normal tissues or the bloodstream to meet energy and anabolic demands. Tumor-induced chronic inflammation, a high-energy process, also consumes nutrients to sustain its dysfunctional activities.
