Surgical treatment of right ventricle thrombus in a patient with iron-deficiency anaemia.

Indian J Thorac Cardiovasc Surg

May 2023

Department of Cardiac Surgery, Dedinje Cardiovascular Institute, Heroja Milana Tepica 1, 11000 Belgrade, Serbia.

Unlabelled: Right ventricle organized thrombus is a rare pathological condition diagnosed in patients with a risk factor. The most common are right ventricle (RV) failure, autoimmune disease (Behcet disease), hypercoagulable disorder, anaemia, RV pacing leads, pulmonary artery catheters, RV infarction, and ventricular arrhythmogenic cardiomyopathy. The literature describes the impact of iron-deficiency anaemia on thrombosis.

Giant lipoma is characterized by asymptomatic growth and compared with other parts of the body rarely occurs on the neck. If the tumor is localized in the lateral segment of the neck, it can show symptoms in the form of dysphagia and dyspnea. Preoperatively, it is important to perform computed tomography (CT) diagnostic to determine the size of the lesion and makes the plan for operative treatment.

Introduction: Acute pulmonary vein (PV) reconnection is frequently encountered in patients undergoing PV isolation (PVI) procedure for the treatment of atrial fibrillation. In this study, we investigated whether the identification and ablation of residual potentials (RPs), after the initial achievement of PVI, reduces acute PV reconnection rate.

Methods: Following PVI in 160 patients, mapping along the ablation line was performed to identify RPs, defined as bipolar amplitude ≥0.

Background: Sex does have an effect on disease perception and outcomes after cardiac surgery.

Objectives: The aim of this study was to quantify the differences in cardiovascular risk profiles within an age-matched cohort and assess the long-term survival differences in males and females who underwent surgical aortic valve replacement (SAVR) with or without concomitant coronary artery bypass surgery.

Methods: All-comers patients who underwent SAVR with or without coronary artery bypass surgery were included.

The saphenous vein is one of the most common used grafts (SVG) for surgical revascularization. The mechanism of the SVGs occlusion is still unknown. Surgical preparation techniques have an important role in the early and late graft occlusion.

A sound anesthesiologist-surgeon collaboration is crucial for the success of functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS). The aim of this narrative review was to describe if and how anesthetic choice can decrease bleeding and improve visibility in the surgical field (VSF) and thus contribute to successful FESS. A literature search was conducted on evidence-based practices published from 2011 to 2021 describing perioperative care, intravenous/inhalation anesthetics, and operative approaches for FESS and their effects on blood loss and VSF.

Aim: To assess bone status expressed as hip bone mineral density (BMD) in men with heart failure (HF).

Methods And Results: A total of 141 male patients with HF underwent dual energy X-ray absorptiometry to assess their BMD. We analysed markers of bone metabolism.

Body Mass Index and Late Adverse Outcomes after a Carotid Endarterectomy.

Int J Environ Res Public Health

February 2023

Institute of Epidemiology, Faculty of Medicine, University of Belgrade, 11000 Belgrade, Serbia.

A cohort study was conducted to examine the association of an increased body mass index (BMI) with late adverse outcomes after a carotid endarterectomy (CEA). It comprised 1597 CEAs, performed in 1533 patients at the Vascular Surgery Clinic in Belgrade, from 1 January 2012 to 31 December 2017. The follow-up lasted four years after CEA.

Background: The optimal treatment strategy for patients with severe carotid artery disease undergoing coronary artery bypass grafting is still problematic. The important question is whether it is necessary to treat significant carotid disease in patients who have undergone coronary artery bypass grafting. This study analyzed short- and midterm results after same-day carotid artery stenting and coronary artery bypass grafting.

The anomalous left coronary artery from the pulmonary artery is a rare congenital disease. Early surgical reconstruction is mandatory to prevent adverse cardiac events. Direct coronary button transfer, vein graft interposition, ligation, and coronary artery bypass construction are the most commonly used techniques.

Background: The COMET-CTO trial was a randomized prospective study that assessed long-term follow-up in patients with chronic total occlusion (CTO) in coronary arteries treated with percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) or with optimal medical therapy (OMT). During the 9-month follow-up, the incidence of major adverse cardiac events (MACE) did not differ between the two groups; no death or myocardial infarction (MI) was observed. There was a significant difference in quality of life (QoL), assessed by the Seattle Angina Questionnaire (SAQ), in favor of the PCI group.

Article Synopsis
  • Aortic stenosis (AS) is a serious condition requiring updated treatment approaches, outlined in comparative reviews of 2021 European and 2020 American guidelines.
  • Both sets of guidelines generally align, but key differences include recommended intervention timing, with Europe suggesting earlier action at a 55% ejection fraction, and differing age thresholds for surgical bioprosthesis and valve replacements.
  • Additionally, the review highlights a trend away from mechanical valve replacements and identifies gaps in research on various treatment aspects, including care for asymptomatic patients and specific procedural approaches.

Article Synopsis
  • * Non-fatal PMAE were found to be less common after PCI compared to CABG, but they significantly predicted mortality within the first year despite not impacting long-term outcomes.
  • * Optimal medical therapy (OMT) may improve survival in patients experiencing non-fatal PMAE, particularly in the first year post-procedure, emphasizing the need for closer follow-up during this time.

As the existing data on the correlation of adiposity with adverse outcomes of carotid endarterectomy (CEA) are inconsistent, the aim of the present study is to examine the correlation of an increased body mass index with 30-day complications after carotid endarterectomy. The cohort study comprises 1586 CEAs, performed at the Clinic for Vascular Surgery in Belgrade, from 2012-2017. Out of them, 550 CEAs were performed in patients with normal body mass index (18.

Long-term survival in coronary artery bypass grafting surgery depending on the second conduit used.

Trends Cardiovasc Med

April 2023

Department of Cardiac Surgery, "Dedinje" Cardiovascular Institute, Heroja Milana Tepića 1, Belgrade 11000, Serbia. Electronic address:

There is still debate whether radial artery (RA) conduits are better grafts then saphenous vein grafts (SVG) as a second conduit in coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) surgery. Although it has been confirmed that RA grafts have significantly better patency over years, only some observational studies have associated RA use with reduced all-cause mortality. So far, no randomized controlled trial (CRT) has confirmed significantly better survival for RA graft recipients versus SVG recipients.

Introduction: Ischemic postconditioning (IPCT) represents one of the several therapeutic strategies to attenuate ischemic reperfusion injury (IR) after carotid endarterectomy (CEA). We here present the first in-human study of IPCT in carotid surgery.

Methods: The study represents an observational case-control study, with the data collected in our Institution carotid database.

The primary aim of the presented study is to analyze and compare the rate of carotid restenosis in patients after eversion carotid endarterectomy (eCEA), primary carotid angioplasty and stenting (CASp), and stenting for carotid artery restenosis after previous eCEA (CASr). The secondary aim is to compare clinical outcomes in patients with carotid restenosis. The total number of patients with evident carotid restenosis was 223 (24.

Introduction: Severe aortic stenosis, a highly-common valve disease in the elderly, has a poor prognosis if left untreated. To address the concern of effective procedures for severe aortic stenosis, a systematic TAVI program was established at the Dedinje Cardiovascular Institute (Belgrade, Serbia).

Methods: Our cohort was composed of 56 patients (74±15 years old).
