Background: The biochemical makeup of grape berries at harvest is essential for wine quality and depends on a fine transcriptional regulation occurring during berry development. In this study, we conducted a comprehensive survey of transcriptomic and metabolomic changes occurring in different berry tissues and developmental stages of the ancient grapes Aglianico and Falanghina to establish the patterns of the secondary metabolites contributing to their wine aroma and investigate the underlying transcriptional regulation.

Results: Over two hundred genes related to aroma were found, of which 107 were differentially expressed in Aglianico and 99 in Falanghina.

Silver thiolate nanoclusters have been functionalized with a chiral amino alcohol ligand that has previously shown high catalytic efficiency in different asymmetric reactions. The as-developed nanostructured catalyst, which can be easily recovered by simple centrifugation, has been tested in the addition of nitromethane to aromatic aldehydes, showing the same catalytic activity as the homogeneous ligand. Moreover, it was reused for two further recycling cycles without loss of efficiency.

Despite current knowledge showing that fruits like tomato and grape berries accumulate different components of the light reactions and Calvin cycle, the role of green tissues in fruits is not yet fully understood. In mature tomato fruits, chlorophylls are degraded and replaced by carotenoids through the conversion of chloroplasts in chromoplasts, while in red grape berries, chloroplasts persist at maturity and chlorophylls are masked by anthocyanins. To study isoprenoid and lipid metabolism in grape skin chloroplasts, metabolites of enriched organelle fractions were analyzed by high-performance liquid chromatography-high-resolution mass spectrometry (HPLC-HRMS) and the expression of key genes was evaluated by real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) in berry skins and leaves.

In this study, site-specific natural background levels (NBLs) were determined for 18 elements (Al, As, Be, Cd, Co, Cu, Cr, Fe, Hg, K, Mn, Mo, Ni, Pb, Tl, U, V, and Zn) in two sediment cores collected offshore the Bagnoli-Coroglio brownfield site (Gulf of Pozzuoli, southern Italy) to accurately assess the degree of contamination and the historical trends in Heavy Metals (HMs) enrichment. In this work, we study the structural and electronic properties of boron nitride bilayers sandwiched between graphene sheets. Different stacking, twist angles, doping, as well as an applied external gate voltage, are reported to induce important changes in the electronic band structure near the Fermi level. Ab Initio Study of Octane Moiety Adsorption on H- and Cl-Functionalized Silicon Nanowires.

Using first-principles calculations based on density functional theory, we investigated the effects of surface functionalization on the energetic and electronic properties of hydrogenated and chlorinated silicon nanowires oriented along the <112> direction. We show that the band structure is strongly influenced by the diameter of the nanowire, while substantial variations in the formation energy are observed by changing the passivation species. We modeled an octane moiety absorption on the (111) and (110) surface of the silicon nanowire to address the effects on the electronic structure of the chlorinated and hydrogenated systems.

In the present work, we study the genetic control of reproductive traits under different heat stress conditions in two populations of inbred lines derived from crosses between two accessions and two tomato cultivars (E9×L5 and E6203×LA1589). The temperature increase affected the reproductive traits, especially at extremely high temperatures, where only a few lines were able to set fruits. Even though a relative modest number of QTLs was identified, two clusters of QTLs involved in the responses of reproductive traits to heat stress were detected in both populations on chromosomes 1 and 2.
