Long term outcomes from uncorrected hypospadias: a scoping review.

Actas Urol Esp (Engl Ed)

January 2025

Department of Urology, Cork University Hospital, Cork, Ireland; Department of Surgery, University College Cork, Ireland. Electronic address:

Introduction: The goal of hypospadias repair is to optimize urinary and sexual function, improve cosmesis and minimise the psychosocial effects associated with a penile anomaly. However, a lack of clarity exists regarding the role of surgery in milder hypospadias where the anomaly is inconspicuous and there is no anticipated impact on function. The aim of this study was to review the long term functional, cosmetic and psychosocial outcomes in men with uncorrected hypospadias.

Background And Objective: While active surveillance (AS) is an alternative to surgical interventions in patients with small renal masses (SRMs), evidence regarding its oncological efficacy is still debated. We aimed to evaluate oncological outcomes for patients with SRMs who underwent AS in comparison to surgical interventions.

Methods: In April 2024, PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science were queried for comparative studies evaluating AS in patients with SRMs (PROSPERO: CRD42024530299).

Breast cancer stands as the most frequently diagnosed cancer and the primary cause of cancer-related mortality among women worldwide, including Italy. With the increasing number of survivors, many are enrolled in regular follow-up programs. However, adherence to recommendations from scientific societies (such as ASCO, ESMO, AIOM) for breast cancer follow-up management varies in daily clinical practice across different cancer centers, potentially resulting in unequal management and escalating costs.

Electrocorticography and navigated transcranial magnetic stimulation-tailored supratotal resection for epileptogenic low-grade gliomas.

J Neurosurg

October 2024

1Department of Neurosurgery, Department of Neuroscience, Psychology, Drug Area and Child Health (NEUROFARBA), Careggi University Hospital, University of Florence.

Objective: Epilepsy is commonly associated with low-grade gliomas (LGGs), impacting patients' well-being. While resection is the primary treatment, seizures can persist postoperatively in 27%-55% of cases. The authors aimed to evaluate an electrocorticography (ECoG) and navigated transcranial magnetic stimulation (nTMS)-tailored supratotal resection (ETT-SpTR) for LGG in controlling seizures, preserving neurological function, and enhancing treatment effectiveness.

Article Synopsis
  • - Gastrointestinal complications are common in systemic sclerosis (SSc) and may be linked to autoimmune factors and blood vessel damage, but the exact causes are unclear.
  • - The study examined the small blood vessels in the abdomen of SSc patients using Doppler Ultrasound to explore their relationship with GI symptoms and disease progression.
  • - Results showed differences in blood flow measurements between types of SSc and found significant correlations between blood vessel function and GI symptoms like fecal incontinence.

Article Synopsis
  • Surgery is the standard treatment for primary renal cell carcinoma (RCC), but stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT) is being explored as an alternative, particularly for patients who cannot or choose not to undergo surgery.
  • A systematic review of 13 studies showed that SBRT resulted in high local control (98% at one year) and overall survival rates (95% at one year), with low rates of serious adverse events (3%).
  • However, the studies had limitations such as short follow-up periods and inconsistent reporting of kidney function, indicating that more research is needed to evaluate its long-term effectiveness.

Article Synopsis
  • In a study of 4011 patients who had unilateral cT1a-b renal mass treated with partial nephrectomy, researchers aimed to explore how a surgeon's experience affects surgical outcomes, specifically acute kidney injury (AKI) and kidney function a year post-surgery.
  • Previously, it was known that complications and ischemia times improved with surgeon experience, but there was limited data on long-term kidney function.
  • The findings revealed no significant association between surgical experience and AKI or recovery of kidney function in either laparoscopic or robot-assisted techniques, suggesting other factors may play a more crucial role in these outcomes.

Impact of the COVID-19 Prioritization Recommendations on Pathological Stages of Urologic Malignancies: A Real-World Analysis at a High-Volume Referral Institution.

J Clin Med

October 2024

Unit of Oncologic Minimally-Invasive Urology and Andrology, Department of Experimental and Clinical Medicine, University of Florence, Careggi Hospital, 50141 Florence, Italy.

Article Synopsis
  • The European Association of Urology (EAU) developed guidelines during the COVID-19 pandemic to prioritize surgeries for patients with urological malignancies, focusing on "high-risk" cases.
  • A study compared tumor characteristics of patients treated during the pandemic (2020-2021) with those treated post-pandemic (2022-2023), finding that while surgical procedures were similar, certain surgeries like radical prostatectomies and partial nephrectomies were significantly lower during the pandemic.
  • Despite the differences in surgery rates, the study found no significant changes in tumor pathological features, indicating that effective prioritization and centralization of care can help maintain the quality of oncological treatment during health crises.

Defining ideal middle cerebral artery bifurcation aneurysm size for Woven EndoBridge embolization.

J Neurosurg

October 2024

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to identify the optimal sizes for middle cerebral artery (MCA) bifurcation aneurysms that are most suitable for treatment with the Woven EndoBridge (WEB) device, focusing on aneurysm width and neck dimensions.
  • Using a large retrospective database, the researchers analyzed unruptured MCA bifurcation aneurysms and established ideal cutoff values of 6.1 mm for width and 4.6 mm for neck size regarding treatment effectiveness.
  • Findings indicated that aneurysms smaller than these cutoff values had significantly higher rates of occlusion (93% for width and 90% for neck) and lower retreatment rates compared to larger aneurysms, highlighting the importance of

Sperm oxidative stress has been extensively associated to male infertility. However, tests to detect this parameter have not been yet introduced in clinical practice and no definitive data are present on the extent of oxidative stress in male infertility. In this study, we used a novel and reliable flow cytometric method to reveal sperm ROS production in subfertile patients (n = 131) and in healthy donors (n = 31).

September 2024

The Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust, London, UK; UCL Division of Surgery and Interventional Science, University College London, London, UK; Department of Urology, The Netherlands Cancer Institute, Antoni van Leeuwenhoek Hospital, Amsterdam, The Netherlands.

Article Synopsis
  • Immune-oncology strategies are improving treatment for renal cell carcinoma (RCC), especially with the introduction of immunotherapy in the perioperative setting.
  • Adjuvant therapy with pembrolizumab has shown benefits in disease-free survival post-surgery but there's limited support for neoadjuvant therapies outside trials; both strategies have their risks and challenges.
  • While adjuvant immunotherapy is now a standard treatment, understanding the optimal use of neoadjuvant approaches is still unclear and requires further research in biomarker development and clinical trials.
