Brain oscillations most often occur in bursts, called oscillation packets, which span a finite extent in time and frequency. Recent studies have shown that these packets portray a much more dynamic picture of synchronization and transient communication between sites than previously thought. To understand their nature and statistical properties, techniques are needed to objectively detect oscillation packets and to quantify their temporal and frequency extent, as well as their magnitude.

The present work aimed to test the efficiency of FT-Raman spectroscopy for fruit spirits discrimination by developing differentiation models based on two approaches, namely a supervised statistical method (Partial Least Squares Discriminant Analysis), and a Machine Learning technique (Support Vector Machines). For this purpose, a data set comprising 86 Romanian distillate samples was used, which aimed to be differentiated in terms of the raw material used for production (plum, apple, pear and grape) and county of origin (Cluj, Satu Mare and Salaj). Eight distinct preprocessing methods (autoscale, mean center, variance scaling, smoothing, 1 derivative, 2 derivative, standard normal variate and Pareto) followed by a feature selection step were applied to identify the meaningful input data based on which the most efficient classification models can be constructed.

Highly cooperative chimeric super-SOX induces naive pluripotency across species.

Cell Stem Cell

January 2024

Max Planck Institute for Molecular Biomedicine, Münster, Germany; Department of Genetics, Harvard Medical School, Boston, MA, USA; Wyss Institute, Harvard University, Boston, MA, USA. Electronic address:

Our understanding of pluripotency remains limited: iPSC generation has only been established for a few model species, pluripotent stem cell lines exhibit inconsistent developmental potential, and germline transmission has only been demonstrated for mice and rats. By swapping structural elements between Sox2 and Sox17, we built a chimeric super-SOX factor, Sox2-17, that enhanced iPSC generation in five tested species: mouse, human, cynomolgus monkey, cow, and pig. A swap of alanine to valine at the interface between Sox2 and Oct4 delivered a gain of function by stabilizing Sox2/Oct4 dimerization on DNA, enabling generation of high-quality OSKM iPSCs capable of supporting the development of healthy all-iPSC mice.

Nanomaterials (Basel)

December 2023

Faculty of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, Babes-Bolyai University, 11 Arany Janos Street, 400028 Cluj-Napoca, Romania.

Nanoparticles of NiLaFeO ferrite spinel incorporated in a SiO matrix were synthesized via a sol-gel method, followed by annealing at 200, 500, and 800 °C. The resulting materials were characterized via XRD, AFM, and BET techniques and evaluated for photocatalytic activity. The XRD diffractograms validate the formation of a single-phase cubic spinel structure at all temperatures, without any evidence of secondary peaks.

Correlation of Elemental Transfer, Bioactive Compounds and Antioxidant Activity on L. Grown in Soil with Functionalized CNT and HMs.

Metabolites

November 2023

Department of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology, Faculty of Biology and Geology, Babeș-Bolyai University, 1 Kogălniceanu St., 400084 Cluj-Napoca, Romania.

While heavy metals (HM) have been considered in recent decades to be the most common and problematic pollutants, the expansion of the list of pollutants due to the active use of carbon nanotubes (CNT) raises new questions about the benefit and harm of HM released to nature individually or fixed on CNT walls. A pot experiment was conducted to compare the effect of two classes of potential pollutants-metal salts of Pb, Mn, Cu, Zn, Cd, and Ni; and functionalized CNTs with COOH, MnO, FeO, and MnO-FeO-applied in soil, on the elemental transfer, the bioactive compounds accumulation, and the antioxidant activity in lettuce. While CNTs mainly increased the elemental transfer from soil to leaves, HM salts strongly obstructed it.

Comprehending symbiont abundance among host species is a major ecological endeavour, and the metabolic theory of ecology has been proposed to understand what constrains symbiont populations. We parameterized metabolic theory equations to investigate how bird species' body size and the body size of their feather mites relate to mite abundance according to four potential energy (uropygial gland size) and space constraints (wing area, total length of barbs and number of feather barbs). Predictions were compared with the empirical scaling of feather mite abundance across 106 passerine bird species (26,604 individual birds sampled), using phylogenetic modelling and quantile regression.
