Uniportal video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS) has recently gained popularity as procedure for major lung resections, and actually seems to be the future of thoracic surgery. Uniportal VATS has shown to be feasible and safe as thoracotomy when a correct and appropriate learning curve is done. However, switching from open or triportal VATS to uniportal VATS approach requires a proper training and a consequent learning curve even among experienced thoracoscopic surgeons.

Clinically effective therapies now exist for remission maintenance in both ulcerative colitis [UC] and Crohn's Disease [CD]. For each major class of IBD medications [5-aminosalicyclates, immunomodulators, and biologic agents], used alone or in combination, there is a risk of relapse following reduction or cessation of treatment. A consensus expert panel convened by the European Crohn's and Colitis Organisation [ECCO] reviewed the published literature and agreed a series of consensus practice points.

Objective: To develop a new score (CATH-score) for predicting intra-procedural risk in patients undergoing CT-guided percutaneous needle pulmonary biopsy.
Patients And Methods: 100 CT-guided lung biopsies performed with a 18 Gauge (G) needle (Pilot Group) were reviewed to analyse patient-, lesion- and procedure-related variables to identify risk factors for procedural complications (pneumothorax and parenchymal bleeding) and diagnosis failure. A scoring system for predicting complications and choosing the right needle (16 G, 18 G, 21 G) was developed using risk factors weighting and prospectively applied to 153 consecutive biopsies (CATH-score Group); complications and diagnostic rates obtained were compared with a group of patients (Control Group) that underwent lung biopsy; in this group of patients the choice of the calliper of the needle was based on the operator experience.

It is generally recognized that in patients with an intact stomach diagnosed with esophageal cancer, gastric tubulization and pull-up shall always be the preferred technique for reconstruction after an esophageal resection. However, in cases with extensive gastroesophageal junction (GEJ) cancer with aboral spread and after previous gastric surgery, alternative methods for reconstruction have to be pursued. Moreover, in benign cases as well as in those with early neoplastic lesions of the esophagus and the GEJ that are associated with long survival, it is basically unclear which conduit should be recommended.

Background: Olfactory dysfunction is an increasingly recognised condition, associated with reduced quality of life and major health outcomes such as neurodegeneration and death. However, translational research in this field is limited by heterogeneity in methodological approach, including definitions of impairment, improvement and appropriate assessment techniques. Accordingly, effective treatments for smell loss are limited.

Ischaemic stroke is one of the commonest causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide and around a fifth of events can be attributed to a cardioembolic source. This is typically due to atrial fibrillation (AF), the most common sustained cardiac arrhythmia. However, AF can, at times, be difficult to detect due to a relative lack of symptoms and the fact that it can be paroxysmal in nature.

The planning of experimental studies for evaluation of nasal airflow is particularly challenging given the difficulty in obtaining objective measurements in vivo. Although standard rhinomanometry and acoustic rhinometry are the most widely used diagnostic tools for evaluation of nasal airflow, they provide only a global measurement of nasal dynamics, without temporal or spatial details. Furthermore, the numerical simulation of nasal airflow as computational fluid dynamics technology is not validated.

Saliva testing is a non-invasive and inexpensive test that can serve as a source of information useful for diagnosis of disease. As we enter the era of genomic technologies and -omic research, collection of saliva has increased. Recent proteomic platforms have analysed the human salivary proteome and characterised about 3000 differentially expressed proteins and peptides: in saliva, more than 90% of proteins in weight are derived from the secretion of three couples of "major" glands; all the other components are derived from minor glands, gingival crevicular fluid, mucosal exudates and oral microflora.

The wide assemblage of microorganisms inhabiting our gastrointestinal tract is an attractive field for overwhelming contemporary research in several aspects of the human health. Most recent molecular techniques, as the use of rRNAs or whole genome sequencing, definitely overcame traditional culture techniques in giving outline of the intestinal bacterial richness. Moreover, the crosstalk between host and intestinal microbes is considered a cornerstone affecting the host's metabolism, immunity, autoimmunity and autoinflammation and elaborate networks linked to several organs.
