We present a computational study of the structure and of the transport properties of electrolytes based on Li[(CF₃SO₂)₂N] solutions in mixtures of sulfoxides and sulfones solvents. The simulations of the liquid phases have been carried out using molecular dynamics with a suitably parametrized model of the intermolecular potential based on a polarizable expression of the electrostatic interactions. Pulse field gradient NMR measurements have been used to validate and support the computational findings.

Background: According to the literature, about one third of patients with brain ischemic symptoms lasting <24 h, which are classified as Transient ischemic attacks (TIAs) according to the traditional "time-based" definition, show the presence of acute ischemic lesions at neuroimaging. Recent evidence has shown that the presence of acute ischemic lesions at neuroimaging may impact on the outcome of patients with transient ischemic symptoms treated with dual antiplatelet treatment (DAPT). This uncertainty is even more compelling in recent years as short-term DAPT has become the standard treatment for any non-cardioembolic TIA or minor ischemic stroke.

Introduction: Prehospital emergency nursing is a critical domain requiring specialized competencies and robust clinical preparation. Nurses in this sector manage high-complexity situations necessitating a broad range of competencies. This study aimed to identify and validate the essential competencies required for specialized ambulance nurses in Italy using a modified Delphi methodology.

Urogenital schistosomiasis caused by Schistosoma haematobium is a major cause of disability in endemic areas. Despite its socio-economic burden, no vaccine exists and the parasite's immunobiology remains underexplored. Genome annotation has revealed over 40 different genes encoding tetraspanins, transmembrane proteins with known immunomodulatory properties in other plathelminthes.

The Kerr nonlinearity allows for exact analytic soliton solutions in 1+1D. While nothing excludes that these solitons form in naturally occurring real-world 3D settings as solitary walls or stripes, their observation had previously been considered unfeasible because of the strong transverse instability intrinsic to the extended nonlinear perturbation. We report the observation of solitons that are fully compatible with the 1+1D Kerr paradigm limit hosted in a 2+1D system.

Introduction: Internal fixation in not-comminuted oblique and transverse olecranon fractures is commonly performed with tension band wiring. However, despite its high healing rate, this technique is associated with a high rate of complications, often requiring the removal of fixation devices in up to 80 % of cases. The aim of our study was to describe a surgical technique using eyelet pins that maintains the effectiveness of the classic tension band wiring while reducing intolerance or displacement of the fixation devices.

Introduction: Usually ipsilateral fractures of the femur and tibia are not compatible with good results and require surgery. The unsatisfactory results are more likely due to complex patterns of fractures, compromised soft tissue, associated ligament injuries, and concomitant vital organ injuries. There are many classifications to describe this type of fracture but none of them is a prognostic classification.

TAR DNA-binding protein 43 (TDP-43) is a ubiquitously expressed DNA/RNA binding protein critical for regulating gene expression, including transcription, splicing, mRNA stability, and protein translation. Aggregation of pathological TDP-43 proteins in the cytoplasm of neurons and glial cells appears to be a common feature of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and other neurodegenerative diseases such as frontotemporal dementia (FTD), contributing to motor neuron degeneration and clinical symptoms. Downregulation of TDP-43 expression to prevent or reduce the formation of pathological aggregates is a potential therapeutic approach for treating TDP-43-related diseases.

With the large volume of data coming from implemented technologies and monitoring systems, intensive care units (ICUs) represent a key area for artificial intelligence (AI) application. Despite the last decade has been marked by studies focused on the use of AI in medicine, its application in mechanical ventilation management is still limited. Optimizing mechanical ventilation is a complex and high-stake intervention, which requires a deep understanding of respiratory pathophysiology.

Purpose: To evaluate efficacy and tolerance of short-course radiotherapy (SCRT) prior to possible chemotherapy (CHT) and surgery in 64 patients with locally advanced rectal cancer, in terms of acute and early late toxicity and survival outcomes with prognostic factors.
Methods: Sixty-four patients affected by rectal tumor were treated from 2008 to 2023 radiation therapy, with a total dose of 25 Gy in 5 fractions. The Kaplan-Meier method was used to estimate the rates of overall survival (OS), cancer specific survival (CSS), local control (LC), disease free survival (DFS) and metastasis free survival (MFS).

Neurodegenerative diseases are among the major challenges in modern medicine, due to the progressive aging of the world population. Among these, Parkinson's disease (PD) affects 10 million people worldwide and is associated with the aggregation of the presynaptic protein α-synuclein (α-syn). Here we use two different PD models, yeast cells and neuroblastoma cells overexpressing α-syn, to investigate the protective effect of an extract from the cocoa shell, which is a by-product of the roasting process of cocoa beans.

The ongoing improvement in laser technology and target fabrication is opening new possibilities for diagnostic development. An example is x-ray phase-contrast imaging (XPCI), which serves as an advanced x-ray imaging diagnostic in laser-driven experiments. In this work, we present the results of the XPCI platform that was developed at the OMEGA EP Laser-Facility to study multi-Mbar single and double shocks produced using a kilojoule laser driver.

The Keap1-Nrf2 pathway is an essential system that maintains redox homeostasis and modulates key metabolic processes, including metabolism of amino acids to promote the synthesis of antioxidant enzymes. Inhibitors of the protein-protein interaction (PPI) between Keap1 and Nrf2 have emerged as a promising strategy for developing novel classes of antioxidant agents that selectively activate this pathway without off-target effects. Carotenoids, a large family of lipophilic isoprenoids synthesized by all photosynthetic organisms, are well-known for their antioxidant activities.

Background: Patients with skin lesions suspicious for skin cancer or atypical melanocytic nevi of uncertain malignant potential often present to dermatologists, who may have variable dermoscopy triage clinical experience.
Objective: To evaluate the clinical utility of a digital dermoscopy image-based artificial intelligence algorithm (DDI-AI device) on the diagnosis and management of skin cancers by dermatologists.
Methods: Thirty-six United States board-certified dermatologists evaluated 50 clinical images and 50 digital dermoscopy images of the same skin lesions (25 malignant and 25 benign), first without and then with knowledge of the DDI-AI device output.

This study advances the understanding of risk and protective factors in trajectories of conduct problems in adolescence in seven countries that differ widely on a number of sociodemographic factors as well as norms related to adolescent behavior. Youth- and parent-report data from 988 adolescents in seven countries (Colombia, Italy, Kenya, Philippines, Sweden, Thailand, and the USA) who were followed longitudinally from ages 10 to 18 (yielding 6872 total data points) were subject to latent class growth analysis. A 4-class model provided the best fit to the data: Late Starters, Alcohol Experimenters, Mid-Adolescent Starters, and Pervasive Risk Takers.

Background/aim: Lipid-lowering therapy prescription is low in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients, often not achieving lipid threshold target despite treatment. However, evidence derives from small, monocentric cohorts. We assessed adherence to lipid-lowering treatment for primary cardiovascular (CV) prevention in a RA cohort according to international guidelines.
