Background And Aims: Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is a microvascular complication of diabetes and represents the leading cause of blindness in working-age adults. The aim of this study was to investigate the risk factors for DR in patients with type 2 diabetes (T2DM) with and without diabetic nephropathy (DN).
Methods: A total of 160 patients with T2DM were included in the study.

Diabetic kidney disease (DKD) is one of the most common microvascular complications of both type 1 and type 2 diabetes and the most common cause of the end-stage renal disease (ESRD). It has been evidenced that targeted interventions at an early stage of DKD can efficiently prevent or delay the progression of kidney failure and improve patient outcomes. Therefore, regular screening for DKD has become one of the fundamental principles of diabetes care.

Hyperuricemia is a well-known cardiovascular risk factor. The aim of our study was to investigate the connection between postoperative hyperuricemia and poor outcomes after elective cardiac surgery compared to patients without postoperative hyperuricemia. In this retrospective study, a total of 227 patients after elective cardiac surgery were divided into two groups: 42 patients with postoperative hyperuricemia (mean age 65.

Background: Monitoring human circulating N-glycome could provide valuable insight into an individual's metabolic status. Therefore, we examined if aberrant carbohydrate metabolism in gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) associates with alterations in plasma protein, immunoglobulin G (IgG) and immunoglobulin A (IgA) N-glycosylation.
Methods: Plasma protein, IgG and IgA N-glycans were enzymatically released, purified and chromatographically profiled in 48 pregnant women with normal glucose tolerance and 41 pregnant women with GDM, all sampled at 24-28 weeks of gestation.

Objective: The aim of the present study was to investigate islet autoimmunity and susceptibility to type 1 diabetes (T1D) in children/adolescents with autoimmune thyroid disease (AITD, and in family members of AITD patients with islet autoimmunity.
Methods: Islet-cell cytoplasmic, glutamic-acid decarboxylase, and tyrosine-phosphatase autoantibodies (AAbs) were measured in 161 AITD patients [127 with autoimmune thyroiditis (AT); 34 with Graves’ disease (GD)], 20 family members of AITD patients with islet autoimmunity, and 155 age-matched controls.
Results: Islet autoimmunity was found in 10.

Aim: To determine the diagnostic accuracy of non-invasive tear film break-up time (NIBUT) measured by the handheld lipid layer examination instrument.
Methods: 108 patients were enrolled in this cross-sectional study and divided into two groups: patients with dry eye (n = 57) categorized by the presence of dry eye symptoms obtained by Schein Questionnaire and minimally-one objective dry eye sign (tear film break-up time <10 s or corneal, conjunctival and lid margin fluorescein staining), and healthy subjects (n = 51).
Results: Dry eye subjects had significantly shorter NIBUT than healthy subjects (6 s vs 20 s, p < 0.

This cross-sectional study aimed to investigate the connection between meibomian gland (MG) excreta quantity and quality after MG expression (MGX), dry eye disease (DED) symptoms, and objective DED signs and to clarify the relationship between dry eye and MG function in DED pathophysiology. The study included 200 subjects, 100 with and 100 without dry eye symptoms. Schein questionnaire was used to determine the severity of dry eye symptoms and self-reported skin type for facial skin dryness self-evaluation.

Thyroid gland has a key role in maintaining the body homeostasis. Thyroxine is the main hormone secreted from the thyroid gland, its effect being predominantly achieved after the intracellular conversion of thyroxine to triiodothyronine, which exhibits a higher affinity for the receptor complex, thus modifying gene expression of the target cells. Amiodarone is one of the most commonly used antiarrhythmics in the treatment of a broad spectrum of arrhythmias, usually tachyarrhythmias.

Background: Running is a common physical activity of an aerobic nature that is carried out mostly outdoors and presents a healthy lifestyle. However, the positive effect of running often masks the downsides of potential addiction that can compromise an individual's physical, mental, and social functioning. Most often there is a thin and unclear line separating passionate athletes and running addicts.

Diabetes mellitus is the leading cause of chronic kidney disease, and about 30-40% of patients with diabetes will develop kidney disease. Incretin hormones have received attention during the past three decades not only as a pharmacotherapy for the treatment of type 2 diabetes, but also for their cardiorenometabolic effects. The main incretins are glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) and glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP).

Purpose: To evaluate the effect of switching from preserved prostaglandin analog-timolol fixed combinations (PG-timolol FCs) to preservative-free latanoprost-timolol FC (PF-LT) on intraocular pressure (IOP), ocular surface health, and tolerability in glaucoma and ocular hypertension (OH) patients with the concurrent ocular surface disease (OSD).
Methods: This was a longitudinal, prospective, interventional, real-life study among 42 patients. Up to 3 visits were planned, at baseline, 30, and 90 days to assess efficacy on IOP decrease and local tolerance.

Aims/hypothesis: Nordic dietary patterns that are high in healthy traditional Nordic foods may have a role in the prevention and management of diabetes. To inform the update of the EASD clinical practice guidelines for nutrition therapy, we conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of Nordic dietary patterns and cardiometabolic outcomes.
Methods: We searched MEDLINE, EMBASE and The Cochrane Library from inception to 9 March 2021.

Background: Adverse associations of low- and no-calorie sweetened beverages (LNCSB) with cardiometabolic outcomes in observational studies may be explained by reverse causality and residual confounding.
Purpose: To address these limitations we used change analyses of repeated measures of intake and substitution analyses to synthesize the association of LNCSB with cardiometabolic outcomes.
Data Sources: MEDLINE, Embase, and the Cochrane Library were searched up to 10 June 2021 for prospective cohort studies with ≥1 year of follow-up duration in adults.

Importance: There are concerns that low- and no-calorie sweetened beverages (LNCSBs) do not have established benefits, with major dietary guidelines recommending the use of water and not LNCSBs to replace sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs). Whether LNCSB as a substitute can yield similar improvements in cardiometabolic risk factors vs water in their intended substitution for SSBs is unclear.
Objective: To assess the association of LNCSBs (using 3 prespecified substitutions of LNCSBs for SSBs, water for SSBs, and LNCSBs for water) with body weight and cardiometabolic risk factors in adults with and without diabetes.

Aims: We previously demonstrated that antennary fucosylated N-glycans on plasma proteins are regulated by HNF1A and can identify cases of Maturity-Onset Diabetes of the Young caused by HNF1A variants (HNF1A-MODY). Based on literature data, we further postulated that N-glycans with best diagnostic value mostly originate from alpha-1-acid glycoprotein (AGP). In this study we analyzed fucosylation of AGP in subjects with HNF1A-MODY and other types of diabetes aiming to evaluate its diagnostic potential.
