The Impact of Hypomagnesemia on the Long-Term Evolution After Kidney Transplantation.

Background/objectives: Magnesium plays a crucial role in immune function, influencing immunoglobulin synthesis, antibody-dependent cytolysis, and other immune processes. In renal transplant patients, magnesium deficiency is primarily induced by calcineurin inhibitor treatment, through the reduction of magnesium transporter proteins in the renal tubules, leading to magnesium loss.

Methods: To assess the correlation between serum magnesium levels and the long-term outcomes of renal graft and transplant recipients, we conducted a retrospective study on 87 patients who have had a transplant for more than 5 years, a period considered immunologically stable.

Risk Factor Analysis in Vascular Access Complications for Hemodialysis Patients.

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) and renal failure remain critical global health challenges, with vascular access complications posing significant obstacles in hemodialysis management. This study investigates the early and late complications associated with vascular access procedures in a cohort of 1334 patients from Timiș County Emergency Clinical Hospital. Patients were categorized into early complications, occurring within 30 days postoperatively, and late complications, developing beyond this period.

Challenges in Diagnosing Focal Liver Lesions Using Contrast-Enhanced Ultrasound.

Contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) has become the preferred method for many clinicians in evaluating focal liver lesions (FLLs) initially identified through standard ultrasound. However, in clinical practice, certain lesions may deviate from the typical enhancement patterns outlined in EFSUMB guidelines. This study aims to assess FLLs that remained inconclusive or misdiagnosed after CEUS evaluation, spanning eight years of single-center experience.

Development of Solid Nanosystem for Delivery of Chlorhexidine with Increased Antimicrobial Activity and Decreased Cytotoxicity: Characterization and In Vitro and In Ovo Toxicological Screening.

The evaluation of chlorhexidine-carrier nanosystems based on iron oxide magnetic nanoparticles (IOMNPs), has gained significant attention in recent years due to the unique properties of the magnetic nanoparticles (NPSs). Chlorhexidine (CHX), a well-established antimicrobial agent, has been widely used in medical applications, including oral hygiene and surgical antisepsis. This study aims to report an in vitro and in ovo toxicological screening of the synthesized CHX-NPS nanosystem, of the carrier matrix (maghemite NPSs) and of the drug to be delivered (CHX solution), by employing two types of cell lines-HaCaT immortalized human keratinocytes and JB6 Cl 41-5a murine epidermal cells.

Synthesis of Novel Benzothiazole-Profen Hybrid Amides as Potential NSAID Candidates.

Herein, we report the synthesis of a series of new compounds by combining 2-aminobenzothiazole with various profens. The compounds were characterized using techniques such as H- and C-NMR, FT-IR spectrometry, and high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS), with detailed HRMS analysis conducted for each molecule. Their biological activities were tested in vitro, revealing significant anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects, comparable to those of standard reference compounds.

Natural and Synthetic Flavylium Derivatives: Isolation/Synthesis, Characterization and Application.

Given the natural origins of flavylium derivatives, their chemical modifications, and their large potential uses in food, medicine, or green chemistry, the present review is a comprehensive study of flavylium-derived compounds. Several topics such as the green extraction and isolation techniques of flavylium derivatives including their chemical modifications and various characterization tools such as NMR, HPLC, and mass spectrometry are discussed in the review. Furthermore, the use of these derivatives in medicine, food, and materials science is presented, highlighting their relevance and the need for further investigation.

The SARS-CoV-2 virus infection, the most severe pandemic in recent human history, found healthcare systems around the world more or less unprepared. Adjusting to this challenge involved changes in the daily routines of healthcare systems, as well as the patients, once again highlighting the importance of primary care (family physician or general practitioner). In the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, the family doctor in Romania played a crucial role in patient management, rapidly adapting to the changes and challenges imposed by the state of emergency.

Comparing Quality of Life and Psychological Changes in Benign and Malignant Lung Resections.

Pulmonary resections are critical interventions for treating various lung pathologies, both benign and malignant. Understanding the impact of these surgeries on patients' Quality of Life (QoL) is essential for optimizing care. This study aims to compare the Health-Related Quality of Life (HRQoL) and psychological well-being in patients who underwent pulmonary resections for benign versus malignant etiologies.

Relationship Between Maternal Serum Amyloid A Levels and Neonatal Outcomes in Preterm Births.

This study investigated the relationship between maternal serum amyloid A (SAA) levels, a biomarker of systemic inflammation, and specific neonatal outcomes in preterm birth (PTB). The study included 66 consecutive pregnant women hospitalized for spontaneous preterm delivery (ranging from 28 to 36 gestational weeks), at the Timisoara Municipal Hospital. The study measured mSAA levels to assess their potential as predictors of fetal outcomes (respiratory distress syndrome [RDS]), as well as their association with APGAR score, neonatal leukocyte count, and C-reactive protein (CRP) levels as indicators of neonatal status and response.

The effectiveness of balneotherapy on pain, walking, and function in patients with diabetic neuropathy: a prospective observational study.

The treatment of type 2 diabetes patients with diabetic neuropathy using pharmacological and non-pharmacological measures remains a current topic. The aim of this study is to evaluate the effect of comprehensive medical rehabilitation programs that include natural therapeutic factors (carbonated natural mineral water) on pain, gait, and functional status in these patients. Fifty patients diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and diabetic neuropathy in the lower limbs participated in the study.

Since an anti-cancer mechanism of FQs is human topoisomerase II inhibition, it is expected that FQ-GLA hybrids can act similarly.

Epigenetic Biomarkers in Thrombophilia-Related Pregnancy Complications: Mechanisms, Diagnostic Potential, and Therapeutic Implications: A Narrative Review.

Pregnancy complications associated with thrombophilia represent significant risks for maternal and fetal health, leading to adverse outcomes such as pre-eclampsia, recurrent pregnancy loss, and intra-uterine growth restriction (IUGR). They are caused by disruptions in key physiological processes, including the coagulation cascade, trophoblast invasion, angiogenesis, and immune control. Recent advancements in epigenetics have revealed that non-coding RNAs, especially microRNAs (miRNAs), long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs), and extracellular vesicles (EVs) carrying these RNAs, play crucial roles in the regulation of these biological processes.

Vasculo-Protective Effects of Standardized Black Chokeberry Extracts in Mice Aorta.

Black chokeberry ( Elliot) represents a rich source of dietary polyphenols and other bioactive phytochemicals with pleiotropic beneficial cardiovascular effects. The present study was aimed at evaluating the ex vivo effects of two black chokeberry extracts (BChEs), obtained from either dry (DryAr) or frozen (FrozAr) berries, on oxidative stress and vascular function in mice aortic rings after incubation with angiotensin 2 (Ang 2), lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and glucose (GLUC) in order to mimic renin-angiotensin system activation, inflammation and hyperglycemia.

Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is a major global public health concern, particularly in hemodialysis (HD) patients. This study aims to evaluate the demographic, clinical, and laboratory characteristics of HCV-positive patients undergoing HD and assess the long-term impact of direct-acting antivirals (DAAs) on patient outcomes. Moreover, a narrative review aims to summarize the current knowledge regarding HCV treatment in HD patients.

: Coinfection with SARS-CoV-2 and extrapulmonary tuberculosis (extraPTB) presents unique clinical challenges due to dual inflammatory responses and potential differences in patient profiles compared to those with SARS-CoV-2 infection alone. This study uniquely contributes to the underexplored interaction between extraPTB and SARS-CoV-2, focusing on systemic inflammation as a critical determinant of outcomes. This retrospective, cross-sectional study included 123 patients aged 19-91 years, hospitalized at Victor Babeș Hospital in Timișoara from March 2020 to March 2022.

Interventions Targeting Insulin Resistance in Patients with Type 1 Diabetes: A Narrative Review.

Insulin resistance (IR) is the most important factor involved in the pathogenesis of type 2 diabetes but may also develop in type 1 diabetes (T1DM). Developing IR in patients with T1DM may generate a burden in achieving glycemic targets and may deteriorate the overall prognosis. This review aims to describe the pathogenesis of IR in T1DM, summarize the common associations of IR with other conditions in patients with T1DM, describe the consequences of developing IR in these patients, and present the interventions that target IR in people with T1DM.

Safety of SGLT2 Inhibitors and Urinary Tract Infections in Clinical Practice-A Cross-Sectional Study.

: Type 2 diabetes (T2DM) affects millions across the globe, generating a veritable public health issue through quality-of-life-reducing chronic complications, among which urinary tract infections are the most common. A shift in the disease managing paradigm from a glucose-centered view to a concept of cardio-reno-metabolic health has uniquely placed SGLT2 inhibitors as viable medication for the complex management of T2DM and its comorbidities. Some concerns have been raised over the increased likelihood of urinary tract infections (UTIs) associated with SGLT2 inhibitor use.
