Article Synopsis
  • Lung cancer is the main cause of malignant pleural effusion (MPE), and managing MPE is challenging due to issues like recurrence and decreased quality of life.
  • This study evaluated mitoxantrone pleurodesis (MP) as a potential alternative to the standard talc sclerotherapy for treating MPE in lung cancer patients.
  • Results showed that MP had a high overall success rate (88.2%) in managing MPE, with a median survival of 5.2 months, indicating its potential as a safe and effective treatment, though further research is needed for comparison with talc.

While sarcoidosis is a relatively common but often underdiagnosed disease, pneumothorax appears to be a rare clinical event observed mostly at the late stages of the disease course. The precise underlying mechanism of such complication is unclear and probably involves the formation of bullae due to bronchial obstruction and retraction-collapse of distracted lung tissue. Thoracoscopic bullectomy represent the preferred treatment option for recurrent pneumothoraces.

Currently there is increasing incidence of road traffic accidents, increasing awareness of healthcare leading to more advanced diagnostic procedures, and increasing number of admissions in intensive care units are responsible for traumatic (non iatrogenic and iatrogenic) pneumothorax. Pneumothorax has a clinical spectrum from asymptomatic patient to life-threatening situations.

It is integral in the diagnosis and treatment of many thoracic diseases, and is an important alternative to more invasive surgical procedures. FNAC is a method of aspiration cytopathology, which with transthoracic biopsy ("core biopsy") is a group of percutaneous minimally invasive diagnostic procedures for exploration of lung lesions.

We present the outcome of treating complex injuries of the elbow with the "Orthofix" external fixator in patients where the condition of the soft tissues did not permit extensile surgical approach or where the internal fixation would not be stable enough to permit safe early joint mobilization postoperatively. Eight patients were treated, three with supra-intercondylar fracture in the presence of marked osteoporosis and five with fracture-dislocation of the elbow and excessive soft tissue impairment. The fixator was applied for a mean of 8.
