Extraction Basket Entangled in Surgical Sutures in Common Bile Duct Forty-Five Years After Hepatobiliary Surgery: A Bizarre Adverse Event of Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography.

Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) is an important technique for treating biliary obstruction. A case report of a 75-year-old male with diagnosed choledocholithiasis and cholangitis was presented. He had a history of hepatic surgery 45 years ago, and during the ERCP, an unusual clinical scenario was encountered.

Laboratory medicine and sports: where are we now?

Laboratory medicine in sport and exercise has significantly developed during the last decades with the awareness that physical activity contributes to improved health status, and is present in monitoring both professional and recreational athletes. Training and competitions can modify concentrations of a variety of laboratory parameters, so the accurate laboratory data interpretation includes controlled and known preanalytical and analytical variables to prevent misleading interpretations. The paper represents a comprehensive summary of the lectures presented during the 35 Annual Symposium of the Croatian Society of Medical Biochemistry and Laboratory Medicine.

A Novel Time-Aware Deep Learning Model Predicting Myopia in Children and Adolescents.

Objective: To quantitatively predict children's and adolescents' spherical equivalent (SE) by leveraging their variable-length historical vision records.

Design: Retrospective analysis.

Participants: Eight hundred ninety-five myopic children and adolescents aged 4 to 18 years, with a complete ophthalmic examination and retinoscopy in cycloplegia prior to spectacle correction, were enrolled in the period from January 1, 2008 to July 1, 2023 at the University Hospital "Sveti Duh," Zagreb, Croatia.

Intra- and interobserver reliability of ocular surface analyzer LacryDiag.

Aim: To invastigate intra- and interobserver reliability of interferometry, tear meniscus height (TMH) measurement and meibography (MBG) of an ocular surface analyzer, LacryDiag (Quantel Medical, France).

Methods: Five consecutive measurements and subsequent analysis of interferometry, TMH, and MBG were recorded by two examiners using the LacryDiag. To assess intra- and interobserver reliability, we used Cohen's kappa for categorical variables (interferometry), or intraclass correlation coefficient for continuous variables (TMH, MBG).

Serum Concentrations of Chemokines CCL20, CXCL8 and CXCL10 in Relapsing-Remitting Multiple Sclerosis and Their Association with Presence of Antibodies against Epstein-Barr Virus.

Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection and various chemokines, including CCL20, CXCL8 and CXCL10 are considered to participate in the pathogenesis of multiple sclerosis (MS), and several studies point to a direct regulatory effect of EBV on the expression of these chemokines. In our study we hypothesized that serum concentrations of CCL20, CXCL8 and CXCL0 are induced in patients with relapsing-remitting MS (RRMS) in comparison to healthy individuals, and that they are associated with EBV infection. Serum concentrations of CXCL8 and CXCL10 were lower in RRMS patients in relapse in comparison to healthy controls.

Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries are commonly treated through orthopaedic surgery, with traditional procedures relying on arthroscopy using fluid as the medium. However, dry arthroscopy has emerged as a potentially advantageous alternative technique. This method allows the knee joint to remain dry, reducing the risk of fluid leakage and enabling a more precise surgical visualization, resulting in shorter operation times and fewer complications.

Obesity, a global health challenge, necessitates innovative approaches for effective management. Targeting gut peptides in the development of anti-obesity pharmaceuticals has already demonstrated significant efficacy. Ghrelin, peptide YY (PYY), cholecystokinin (CCK), and amylin are crucial in appetite regulation offering promising targets for pharmacological interventions in obesity treatment using both peptide-based and small molecule-based pharmaceuticals.

Releasing Dynamic of Serum ST2 and Calprotectin in Patients with Acute Ischemic Stroke.

This study investigated the releasing dynamics of serum ST2 and calprotectin in patients with acute IS. The study included acute IS patients (N = 20) with an NIH Stroke Scale score ≥8. Sampling was performed at seven time points: after admission (T0) and at the following 24 h consecutive intervals (T1-T6).

KIDNEY CANCER IN CROATIA - TRENDS IN INCIDENCE AND MORTALITY IN THE 21 CENTURY.

Kidney cancer is estimated to be responsible for more than 400 000 new cancer cases and 180 000 cancer deaths a year. Its incidence is increasing in the majority of developed countries, due to an increased prevalence of recognized risk factors such as smoking, alcohol use and obesity, as well as incidental findings on unrelated diagnostic imaging procedures. Mortality is decreasing in the majority of European countries, due to improvements in treatment and stage at diagnosis shift with more tumors being diagnosed at an early stage.

SACRAL NEUROMODULATION IN TREATING OVERACTIVE BLADDER PATIENTS - FIRST-TIME APPLICATION IN CROATIA.

Sacral neuromodulation (SNM) is a safe, efficacious, and minimally invasive advanced therapy that involves electrical stimulation to sacral nerve root to modulate neural pathway. Indications for SNM include symptoms of overactive bladder (OAB), urinary incontinence, urinary retention, urgency and frequency and, regarding bowel dysfunction, fecal incontinence . In Europe and Canada, indication is also established for chronic constipation.

Estimated Pulse Wave Velocity and All-Cause and Cardiovascular Mortality in the General Population.

Carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity (cfPWV), acknowledged as a reliable proxy of arterial stiffness, is an independent predictor of cardiovascular (CV) events. Carotid-femoral PWV is considered the gold standard for the estimation of arterial stiffness. cfPWV is a demanding, time consuming and expensive method, and an estimated PWV (ePWV) has been suggested as an alternative method when cfPWV is not available.

Unveiling Visual Acuity in 58,712 Four-Year-Olds: Standardized Assessment Defined Normative Visual Acuity Threshold.

The purpose was to define the threshold of normal visual acuity (VA), mean monocular and binocular VA, and interocular difference in the uniform cohort of healthy four-year-old children. All the children were recruited from the Croatian National Registry of Early Amblyopia Detection database. LEA Symbols inline optotypes were used for VA testing at near and distance, binocularly and monocularly.

The CroMyop study: myopia progression in Croatian children and adolescents-a 15-year retrospective analysis.

Purpose: Myopia is a major global health issue, especially among children and adolescents. Understanding its traits and progression is vital for proper management and prevention. This study aimed to fill a gap in research by analyzing demographic and refractive data concerning myopia among children and adolescents in Croatia, with the goal of providing insights into myopia prevalence, progression rates, and associated risk factors within the Croatian population.

The band count imprecision - a Croatian multicentric pilot study.

Introduction: Due to high inter-observer variability the 2015 International Council for Standardization in Haematology (ICSH) recommendations state to count band neutrophils as segmented neutrophils in the white blood cell (WBC) differential. However, the inclusion of bands as a separate cell entity within the WBC differential is still widely used in hematology laboratories in Croatia. The aim of this multicentric study was to assess the degree of inter-observer variability in enumerating band neutrophils within the WBC differential among Croatian laboratories.

Ethical implications of COVID-19 management-is freedom a desired aim, or a desired means to an end?

Most developed societies managed, due to their prosperity and resource abundance, to structure relationships among free individuals in such a way to leave them fundamentally unstructured, according to the free market principle. As the pandemic illustrated well, this lack of structure when facing collective threats makes it impossible to collectively and proportionately assess and manage its implications and consequences. This may be particularly precarious when introducing comprehensive, monitoring and tracking, surveillance systems dependent on the vaccination status of the individual.

Out-of-Hospital Cardiac Arrest in the Eye of the Beholder and Emergency Medical Service.

Purpose: Out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) remains a global healthcare problem, with low survival and bystander cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) rates. This study aimed to identify event-related factors in OHCA and their impact on return of spontaneous circulation (ROSC) achievement and maintenance until hospital admission.

Patients And Methods: All data were collected from Utstein Resuscitation Registry Template for OHCA from The Institute of Emergency Medicine of Zagreb from January 2012 to August 2022.

Are shortened aPTT values always to be attributed only to preanalytical problems?

Objectives: It has been recognized that shortened activated partial thromboplastin time (aPTT) may be caused by various preanalytical conditions. As coagulation Factor VIII is included in the intrinsic coagulation cascade measured by aPTT, we hypothesized that the shortened aPTT could be a result of elevated FVIII activity. We aimed to inspect the connection of elevated FVIII with shortened aPTT, and the possible effect inflammation has on routine laboratory parameters.

Free temporalis muscle fascia graft in dural reconstruction following surgical resection of intermediate and malignant skull base tumors: A 10-year experience from a single center.

Background: Data from patients with post-ablative dural defects reconstructed using a free temporalis muscle fascia graft (FTFG) after resection of anterior or central skull base tumors were retrospectively analyzed.

Methods: The primary predictor and outcome variables were the reconstructive methods for dural repair and postoperative cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leakage rate, respectively.

Results: Eighty patients were included, and 94 postoperative dural reconstructions were performed using FTFG.

Verification of bile acid determination method and establishing reference intervals for biochemical and haematological parameters in third-trimester pregnant women.

Objectives: The aims of this study were to verify the bile acids (BA) method and to establish reference intervals (RIs) for bile acids (BA) and biochemical and haematological parameters in Croatian pregnant women.

Methods: BA spectrophotometric method verification was performed on Siemens Atellica Solution CH 930 automated analyser using Sentinel reagent. Stability, precision, trueness, linearity, and RIs, as well as lipemia interference were tested according to CLSI guidelines.

Atherosclerosis and depression: is carotid intima-media thicker in patients with depression compared to matched control individuals? A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Objective: To investigate if there is an association between atherosclerosis and depression by using as imaging biomarker the carotid intima media thickness (cIMT), a surrogate marker for atherosclerosis.

Methods: PubMed/Medline, Embase and Cochrane databases were comprehensively searched to identify studies investigating the association between cIMT and depression. The results were pooled using a random-effects statistical model, appropriate for the expected high heterogeneity.
