Chronic kidney disease (CKD) represents an increasingly common pathology that affects patients' quality of life, and it is frequently associated with a high mortality rate, especially in the final stages of the disease. At the same time, diabetes mellitus is a chronic disease that contributes to the increased number of patients with CKD through diabetic kidney disease (DKD). The alternation of hypoglycemia with hyperglycemia is a condition in the occurrence of microvascular complications of diabetes, including DKD, which involves structural and functional changes in the kidneys.

Pathway from Acute Kidney Injury to Chronic Kidney Disease: Molecules Involved in Renal Fibrosis.

Acute kidney injury (AKI) is one of the main conditions responsible for chronic kidney disease (CKD), including end-stage renal disease (ESRD) as a long-term complication. Besides short-term complications, such as electrolyte and acid-base disorders, fluid overload, bleeding complications or immune dysfunctions, AKI can develop chronic injuries and subsequent CKD through renal fibrosis pathways. Kidney fibrosis is a pathological process defined by excessive extracellular matrix (ECM) deposition, evidenced in chronic kidney injuries with maladaptive architecture restoration.

Hantavirus infections in the South‑Eastern European countries: A study of two cases and literature review.

Hantavirus infection is a rare zoonosis in South-Eastern Europe. Depending on the serotype involved, the virus can cause hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome which is also known as endemic nephropathy, and cardiopulmonary syndrome. Prompt diagnosis of the disease is essential for reducing the risk of severe manifestations and complications like chronic kidney disease, secondary hypertension or even death because there is no specific treatment or vaccine approved.

Background: Guidelines endorse self-reported functional capacity for preoperative cardiovascular assessment, although evidence for its predictive value is inconsistent. We hypothesised that self-reported effort tolerance improves prediction of major adverse cardiovascular events (MACEs) after noncardiac surgery.

Methods: This is an international prospective cohort study (June 2017 to April 2020) in patients undergoing elective noncardiac surgery at elevated cardiovascular risk.

The aim of this study is to identify the burn etiology, demographics, clinical characteristics, and outcomes in patients requiring treatment in a regional burn unit.

Comparison of Flexible Ureteroscope Performance between Reusable and Single-Use Models.

Background: Single-use flexible ureteroscopes for urinary retention have been developed in recent years as an alternative to reusable ureteroscopes in order to eliminate the risk of cross-infections and to solve the primary limitations of traditional reusable flexible ureteroscopes for urinary retention.

Methods: In this study, we evaluated and contrasted three of the most recent types of flexible ureteroscopes, including two digital reusable versions (Olympus URF-V and Olympus URF-V2) and one single-use model (Pusen Medi-calUscope UE3022), in both ex vivo and in vivo scenarios. The influence of a variety of instruments on the flow of irrigation and its deflection was investigated ex vivo.

Epidemiological Characteristics and Mortality Risk Factors Comparison in Dialysis and Non-Dialysis CKD Patients with COVID-19-A Single Center Experience.

(1) Background: Despite some controversies between studies, chronic kidney disease (CKD) has a negative impact on COVID-19 outcomes, with patients presenting a higher mortality risk than in the general population. Studies have shown an association between COVID-19 severe cases and different inflammatory biomarkers. The aim of this study was to emphasize the epidemiological characteristics of CKD patients diagnosed with COVID-19 and to determine if the risk of mortality, and the severity of this infection might be influenced by different parameters.

Rare clinical manifestations in systemic lupus erythematosus: a review on frequency and clinical presentation.

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to review the frequency and clinical presentation of the rarest clinical manifestations of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE).

Methods: A list of 6 rare SLE manifestations were defined: gastrointestinal, liver, pulmonary, cardiac, ocular and neurological manifestations. Each topic was assigned to a pair of authors to perform a literature search and article review.

Kidney aging process and the management of the elderly patient with renal impairment (Review).

As life expectancy increases, a rise in the number of chronically ill patients is observed due to the aging population. Among the various diseases, chronic kidney disease is at present one of the main causes of morbidity and, due to its typical complications, it is also one of the most important causes of mortality in the general population. For these reasons, the understanding of the kidney aging process, its consequences and its adequate management are essential.

Incidence of Iron Deficiency and the Role of Intravenous Iron Use in Perioperative Periods.

Iron deficiency is a major problem in worldwide populations, being more alarming in surgical patients. In the presence of absolute iron deficiency (depletion of body iron), functional iron deficiency (during intense bone marrow stimulation by endogenous or exogenous factors), or iron sequestration (acute or chronic inflammatory conditions), iron-restricted erythropoiesis can develop. This systemic review was conducted to draw attention to the delicate problem of perioperative anemia, and to provide solutions to optimize the management of anemic surgical patients.

Combination of cranberry extract and D-mannose - possible enhancer of uropathogen sensitivity to antibiotics in acute therapy of urinary tract infections: Results of a pilot study.

Uncomplicated lower urinary tract infections are extremely common in women. Antibiotic treatment for acute episodes and for recurrence prophylaxis has its drawbacks and alternative therapies are sought in order to reduce the antimicrobial resistance phenomenon and the intestinal dismicrobism expansion. There are few studies on the effect of combination of cranberry extract with D-mannose in acute urinary tract infection management.

The Influence of the Metabolic Syndrome on Early Postoperative Outcomes of Patients With Advanced-stage Endometrial Cancer.

Background/aim: Endometrial cancer is one of the most commonly encountered malignancies among obese women worldwide, a strong causality relationship being established between the two entities. Furthermore, obesity is also associated with metabolic syndrome; the aim of this study was to investigate the effect of metabolic syndrome on the postoperative outcomes of patients with endometrial cancer.

Patients And Methods: Data of 23 patients diagnosed with endometrial cancer and metabolic syndrome were retrospectively reviewed and compared to the those of a control group of patients diagnosed with endometrial cancer in the absence of metabolic syndrome.

Subtotal Colectomy as Part of Debulking Surgery for Advanced-stage Ovarian Cancer.

Background/aim: The presence of extensive lesions of peritoneal carcinomatosis is found in a significant number of cases of extended digestive resection surgery, such as subtotal colectomy. The aim of this study was to report a series of 17 cases that necessitated performing subtotal colectomy as part of cytoreductive surgery for advanced-stage ovarian cancer.

Patients And Methods: Between 2012 and 2020 subtotal colectomy was associated as part of the debulking effort in 17 cases.

Squamous Cell Carcinoma from Abscessed, Mature Cystic Ovarian Teratoma - A Case Report and Literature Review.

Background/aim: Malignant transformation of mature cystic ovarian teratoma is a scarce eventuality, only rare cases being reported so far. Furthermore, development of this transformation in the setting of an abscessed tumor is even scarcer. The aim of this study was to report the case of a 47-year-old patient submitted to surgery for such a lesion.

Radical Hysterectomy for Cervical Cancer in Patients With Uterine Prolapse.

Objective: Congenital heart disease (CHD) is the most common birth defect and represents the leading cause for mortality and morbidity in infants and young adults. Early fetal echocardiography is usually considered a highly specialized scan. The goal of this study is to evaluate the impact of operator's experience in assessing still images of the 4-chamber view and 3-vessels view and to evaluate the feasibility and the performance of a first trimester screening protocol for CHD.
