Successful emergency Lichtenberger lateralisation for immediate bilateral laryngeal immobility after total thyroidectomy: a CARE case report.

Objective: This case report discusses a successful emergency Lichtenberger lateralisation procedure after immediate bilateral laryngeal immobility, occurring after total thyroidectomy.

Methods: A 63-year-old female with right-sided vocal fold paralysis due to compression by a multinodular thyroid goitre underwent total thyroidectomy, which resulted in immediate post-operative bilateral vocal fold immobility. The patient had acute-onset post-operative dyspnoea, was promptly re-intubated, and an emergency lateralisation Lichtenberger suture was placed over the right vocal fold and fixated on the outer surface of the neck.

Surgical Considerations in Addressing Cholesterol Granuloma of the Petrous Apex through an Infracochlear Approach.

Cholesterol granuloma of the petrous bone is a foreign body giant cell reaction to cholesterol deposits with symptoms including hearing loss, vestibular dysfunction, and cranial nerve deficit as a result of cystic mass compression. Surgical treatment is often difficult to plan due to limited access to the lesion and possible injury to surrounding structures. Although considered safe, VA exposure can cause different adverse effects and, in combination with ionising radiation (IR), can also cause synergistic effects. However, little is known about DNA damage incurred by this combination at doses applied in a single radiotherapy treatment.

Effects of different progesterone levels on reproductive outcomes in assisted reproductive technologies: from molecular basis to treatment strategies.

Purpose: The aim of this narrative review is to offer an overview about the role of progesterone levels on pregnancy outcome in patients undergoing assisted reproductive technologies (ARTs).

Methods: A detailed computerized search of the literature was performed in the main electronic databases (MEDLINE, EMBASE, Web of Science) to determine the importance of elevated progesterone levels at different stages of the cycle for pregnancy rates in the fertilization (IVF) cycle. Our review also provides information on the differences between elevated progesterone levels and their interpretation in normal and in poorly responding women.

Introduction: All malignancies, including prostate cancer, require accurate diagnosing and staging before making a treatment decision. The introduction of targeted biopsies based on prostate MRI findings has raised prostate biopsy accuracy. Guided biopsies target the tumor itself during the biopsy instead of the most common tumor sites as is the case with a systemic biopsy.

HOW TO OPTIMALLY SEQUENCE AVAILABLE THERAPY LINES IN ADVANCED PROSTATE CANCER.

Optimal sequencing of available therapy lines in patients with advanced prostate cancer often poses quite a challenge. The guidelines are sometimes equivocal and clinical trial data are not always applicable to a particular patient. There is a difference in availability of therapy options throughout the world.

ROLE OF ANDROGEN RECEPTOR-TARGETED AGENTS IN LOCALIZED PROSTATE CANCER.

Anti-androgen therapy continues to be a basic pilar of treatment for both localized and metastatic prostate cancer. The advent of new generation of androgen receptor targeted agents (ARTA) transformed the care of patients with advanced disease. After such a success, the steps were taken to incorporate a new generation of ARTAs into the treatment landscape of localized prostate cancer.

GENOMICS OF PROSTATE CANCER: CLINICAL UTILITY AND CHALLENGES.

The studying of prostate cancer genomics is important for understanding prostate cancer biology, it can provide clinically relevant stratification into subtypes, the development of new prognostic and predictive markers in the context of precision medicine, and the development of new targeted therapies. Recent studies have provided detailed insight into genomics, epigenomics and proteomics of prostate cancer, both primary and metastatic castration-resistant (mCRPC). Many mutations have been discovered, both those that occur early in the carcinogenesis and progression as well as those responsible for the resistance to therapy occurring later under the influence of treatment.

RECENT ADVANCES IN RADIOTHERAPY MODALITIES FOR PROSTATE CANCER.

Radiotherapy is the attractive treatment option for prostate cancer and has a clear role in all stages of the disease. Over the last decade, advances in technology, imaging capabilities, and improved radiobiological understanding have deeply transformed radiotherapy for prostate cancer, allowing dose escalation and wide adoption of hypofractionation. Furthermore, the integration of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and improved physical precision of dose delivery have given an impetus to additionally target intraprostatic tumor lesions, previously agnostic to conventional radiotherapy target definition concept.

MRI-GUIDED RADIOTHERAPY FOR PROSTATE CANCER: A NEW PARADIGM.

Radiotherapy is one of the key treatment modalities for primary prostate cancer. During the last decade, significant advances were made in radiotherapy technology leading to increasing both physical and biological precision. Being a loco-regional treatment approach, radiotherapy requires accurate target dose deposition while sparing surrounding healthy tissue.

DOSIMETRIC VERIFICATION OF INTENSITY MODULATED RADIOTHERAPY (IMRT) TREATMENT PLANS FOR PROSTATE CANCER PATIENTS.

Intensity modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) has become widely used as a standard radiation therapy technique for the treatment of localized prostate cancer. The transition from conformal radiotherapy (3D CRT) to a more complex IMRT technique triggered the need for more thorough verification of the accuracy in the dose delivery. In this work we present the clinical workflow and the results of patient specific quality assurance (PSQA) procedures for 40 prostate cancer patients who have been treated with step and shot IMRT ever since its implementation in our routine clinical practice.

CORRELATION OF EXPRESSION OF TGF- β AND MMP2 BETWEEN PROSTATIC ADENOCARCINOMA AND ADJACENT UNAFFECTED PARENCHYMA.

Matrix Metalloproteinase 2 (MMP2), the endopeptidase that degrades extracellular matrix is considered to be overexpressed in prostatic carcinoma related to its growth and aggressiveness.

CURRENT ROLE OF MAGNETIC RESONANCE IMAGING IN THE SCREENING, DIAGNOSIS, AND TREATMENT OF PROSTATE CANCER.

Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men. Diagnosis of prostate cancer poses a significant challenge, due to several different key parameters that need to be evaluated, such as age, history of prostate specific antigen (PSA), clinical examination and more recently magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The current diagnostic pathway for prostate cancer has resulted in overdiagnosis and overtreatment as well as underdiagnosis and missed diagnoses in many men.

Impact of COVID-19 on inpatient care related to skin conditions.

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic significantly affected our society and healthcare system. This study aims to evaluate the effects of COVID-19 on the number of hospitalized patients with dermatological diseases in Croatia, as well as the number of these patients treated surgically and conservatively, before (2017-2019) and during the pandemic (2020-2021).

Materials And Methods: This is a retrospective, comparative study of the hospital admission rate for patients with skin, subcutaneous tissue, and breast disorders both before and during the pandemic.

Neurological recovery after early versus delayed surgical decompression for acute traumatic spinal cord injury.

The aim of this study was to determine whether early surgical treatment results in better neurological recovery 12 months after injury than late surgical treatment in patients with acute traumatic spinal cord injury (tSCI). Patients with tSCI requiring surgical spinal decompression presenting to 17 centres in Europe were recruited. Depending on the timing of decompression, patients were divided into early (≤ 12 hours after injury) and late (> 12 hours and < 14 days after injury) groups.

Melatonin in Dermatologic Allergic Diseases and Other Skin Conditions: Current Trends and Reports.

Melatonin is the main hormone that regulates the sleep cycle, and it is mostly produced by the pineal gland from the amino acid tryptophan. It has cytoprotective, immunomodulatory, and anti-apoptotic effects. Melatonin is also one of the most powerful natural antioxidants, directly acting on free radicals and the intracellular antioxidant enzyme system.

Association of Functional Polymorphism in Gene with Alcohol Dependence and Personality Traits: Study in Cloninger's Type I and Type II Alcohol-Dependent Inpatients.

Alcohol dependence (AD) is a complex disorder with a poorly understood etiology. In this study, we investigated the relationship between genetic variation in the gene, which encodes the enzyme responsible for serotonin synthesis in the brain, and both AD and personality traits, with attention to Cloninger's types of AD. The study included 373 healthy control subjects, 206 inpatients with type I AD, and 110 inpatients with type II AD.
