Point-of-care testing performed by healthcare professionals outside the hospital setting: consensus based recommendations from the IFCC Committee on Point-of-Care Testing (IFCC C-POCT).

The International Federation of Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine (IFCC) Committee on Point-of-Care Testing (C-POCT) supports the use of point-of-care testing (POCT) outside of the hospital setting performed by healthcare professionals without formal laboratory education because of its numerous benefits. However, these benefits are associated with risks that must be managed, to ensure the provision of reliable test results and minimize harm to the patient. Healthcare professionals, local regulatory bodies, accredited laboratories as well as manufacturers should actively be engaged in education, oversight and advice to ensure that the healthcare professional selects the appropriate equipment and is able to analyze, troubleshoot and correctly interpret the point-of-care (POC) test results.

Objective: Remission of childhood asthma has not been widely studied. Patients in clinical remission continue to have some degree of bronchial hyperresponsiveness (BHR). The aim of this study was to investigate whether clinical parameters and lung function test are good parameters for discontinuation of inhaled corticosteroids (ICS) in asthmatic children, including patients with persistent BHR, as measured by the methacholine challenge test (MCT).

Impact of Intraoperative Findings on Hearing in Revision Ear Surgery.

Introduction: Hearing results after chronic ear surgery encompass recurrence, localization and extent of cholesteatoma, type of surgery, ossiculoplasty methods, but rarely interpret intraoperative findings. This study aimed to analyze the impact of intraoperative findings in revision tympanomastoidectomy in predicting postoperative hearing.

Materials And Methods: This was a retrospective non-randomized cohort of 101 patients treated for recurrent chronic otitis media by tympanomastoidectomy.

If not recognized, it can lead to a number of serious complications. It is of the utmost importance to raise public awareness and educate parents and other caregivers on all aspects of this topic.

COMPARISON OF HEARING OUTCOMES AFTER STAPES SURGERY DEPENDING ON PROSTHESIS TYPE: A RETROSPECTIVE ANALYSIS.

Stapes surgery is generally performed to treat otosclerosis, and there are numerous surgical techniques and prosthesis materials available. Critical evaluation of postoperative hearing outcomes is crucial for identification and further improvement of treatment options. This study is a non-randomized retrospective analysis of hearing threshold levels before and after stapedectomy or stapedotomy in 365 patients during a twenty-year period.

THE IMPACT OF COVID-19 PANDEMIC ON DIAGNOSIS AND TREATMENT IN OTORHINOLARYNGOLOGY PATIENTS IN CROATIA.

COVID-19 pandemic resulted in a decrease in the number of diagnostic and therapeutic procedures in most ENT departments. We performed a survey among ENT specialists in Croatia aiming to assess how the pandemic influenced their practice, and consequently the patient diagnosis and treatment. The majority of the 123 participants who completed the survey stated that there was a delay in diagnosis and treatment of ENT diseases, which they expected to have negative effects on patient outcomes.

IMPACT OF WEARING HEARING AIDS ON COGNITIVE ABILITIES AND SUBJECTIVE TINNITUS IN PATIENTS WITH SENSORINEURAL HEARING LOSS: A PILOT STUDY.

Due to the fact that the auditory system and central nervous system are connected, pathological changes associated with aging occur on both levels. With the development of hearing aid technology, the quality of life of these patients can be improved.

RHINOGENIC MENINGITIS CAUSED BY CONGENITAL PETROUS APEX CHOLESTEATOMA: SIMULTANEOUS SURGICAL TREATMENT THROUGH TRANSOTIC AND TRANSSPHENOIDAL APPROACH.

A 66-year-old male patient was admitted due to high fever, severe headaches and disturbance of consciousness. Meningitis was confirmed by lumbar puncture and intravenous antimicrobial therapy was started. Since he had undergone radical tympanomastoidectomy 15 years before, otogenic meningitis was suspected, so the patient was referred to our department.

The complex role of the serotonin system in respiratory function and inflammatory diseases such as asthma is unclear. Our study investigated platelet serotonin (5-HT) levels and platelet monoamine oxidase B (MAO-B) activity, as well as associations with (rs6314; rs6313) (rs3813929; rs518147), and (rs1799836; rs6651806) gene polymorphisms in 120 healthy individuals and 120 asthma patients of different severity and phenotypes. Platelet 5-HT concentration was significantly lower, while platelet MAO-B activity was considerably higher in asthma patients; however, they did not differ between patients with different asthma severity or phenotypes.

Psychological Stress and Hand Eczema in Physicians and Dentists: A Comparison Based on Surgical Work.

Background: This research looks at the connection between psychological stress and the prevalence of hand eczema (HE) among physicians and dentists (surgeons, non-surgeons).

Methods: This cross-sectional field study involved 185 participants: physicians (surgeons, non-surgeons), dentists (surgeons, non-surgeons) and controls. Hand lesions were examined using the Osnabrueck Hand Eczema Severity Index (OHSI), and participants answered the Nordic Occupational Skin Questionnaire (NOSQ) and Perceived Stress Scale (PSS).

Biomechanical analysis of a novel Y-plate designed for the treatment of extraarticular distal humerus fractures.

Adult distal humerus fractures are infrequent, yet they account for one-third of all humerus fractures. For the treatment of comminuted and osteoporotic fractures, locking plates are claimed to be biomechanically superior to alternative internal fixing techniques. Treatment remains difficult despite recent advancements and the use of locking plates due to frequent comminution, low bone quality, and limited healing ability in osteoporotic bone.

Urine High-Sensitive Troponin T-Novel Biomarker of Myocardial Damage in Children.

Background: The use of high-sensitive cardiac troponin T (hsTnT) in urine as a marker of cardiac damage in children has not yet been reported. Elimination of cardiac troponins is dependent on renal function; persistently increased serum hsTnT concentrations were observed among individuals with impaired renal function. The aim of this study was to investigate serum and urine hsTnT levels and its correlation in infants and children younger than 24 months of age after cardiac surgery.

Clozapine in Treatment-Resistant Schizophrenia and Its Augmentation with Electroconvulsive Therapy in Ultra-Treatment-Resistant Schizophrenia.

Clozapine is considered the gold standard for patients with treatment-resistant schizophrenia (TRS) who have previously tried other antipsychotics at adequate doses (two or more, with at least one being atypical). However, despite optimal treatment, a subgroup of TRS patients with what is known as ultra-treatment-resistant schizophrenia (UTRS) fails to respond to clozapine, which occurs in 40-70% of cases. The most common approach to manage UTRS involves augmenting clozapine with pharmacological or non-pharmacological interventions, with a growing body of evidence that supports the use of electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) as an augmenter.

Background: Differentiated thyroid carcinoma (DTC) is characterized by an excellent prognosis with a 10-year survival rate > 90%. Postoperative thyroglobulin as a yard-stick for radioiodine therapy: decision tree analysis in a European multicenter series of 1317 patients with differentiated thyroid cancer.
