Objective/background: Migraine patients are frequently affected by sleep complaints. The ketogenic diet (KD) is an option for the treatment of migraine. Our aim was: 1) to assess the effects of KD on sleep complaints in patients affected by migraine and 2) to verify if sleep changes were related to the effects of the diet on headache symptoms.

Inositols are natural molecules involved in several biochemical and metabolic functions in different organs and tissues. The term "inositols" refers to five natural stereoisomers, among which myo-Inositol (myo-Ins) is the most abundant one. Several mechanisms contribute to regulate cellular and tissue homeostasis of myo-Ins levels, including its endogenous synthesis and catabolism, transmembrane transport, intestinal adsorption and renal excretion.

This pilot study aimed to investigate whether the 1-h-post-load plasma glucose ≥155 mg/dl negatively affects the subcortical regions of the brain and the cognitive functions.

The aim of this study was to obtain information on the frequency of occurrence of adverse effects (AEs) related to vaginal erbium laser (VEL™) treatment. The global survey was conducted among practitioners using the non-ablative VEL™ (Fotona, Ljubljana, Slovenia).

Background: Case-finding tools, such as the Identify Chronic Migraine (ID-CM) questionnaire, can improve detection of CM and alleviate its significant societal burden. We aimed to develop and validate the Italian version of the ID-CM (ID-EC) in paper and as a smart app version in a headache clinic-based setting.

Methods: The study investigators translated and adapted to the Italian language the original ID-CM questionnaire (ID-EC) and further implemented it as a smart app.

Do malignant diseases affect semen quality? Sperm parameters of men with cancers.

The advent of modern treatments together with the improvement of the surgical techniques has significantly increased 5-year survival rates of young patients with cancer. Although the deleterious effects of chemotherapy and radiation are well documented, controversies exist about the effect of cancer itself on semen parameters before treatment. We collected data on 236 patients representative of different types of cancers reoffered at our institution for sperm cryopreservation with the aim to correlate the pre-freeze semen parameters with type of cancer, disease stage and with semen quality of 102 fertile and healthy men.

Acute optic neuropathy associated with a novel MFN2 mutation.

Mutations in the mitofusin 2 (MFN2) gene cause CMT2A the most common form of autosomal dominant axonal Charcot-Marie-Tooth (CMT). In addition, mutations in MFN2 have been shown to be responsible for Hereditary Motor Sensory Neuropathy type VI (HSMN VI), a rare early-onset axonal CMT associated with optic neuropathy. Most reports of HMSN VI presented with a sub-acute form of optic neuropathy.

Diagnostic and prognostic role of PET/CT in patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia and progressive disease.

In order to evaluate the predictive value of positron emission tomography-computed tomography (PET/CT) in discriminating the presence of a Richter's syndrome (RS) or a second malignancy (SM), as well as to evaluate its prognostic value in patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL), we retrospectively analyzed the data of 90 patients who, in the suspicion of a RS or a SM, underwent PET/CT followed by the biopsy of the involved tissue. The median maximum Standardized Uptake Value (SUV max) in the presence of a CLL/small lymphocytic lymphoma, a diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL), a Hodgkin lymphoma (HL), a SM were 3.5, 14.

Prognostic factors associated with progression of smoldering multiple myeloma to symptomatic form.

Background: Smoldering multiple myeloma (SMM) presents a high risk of progression to symptomatic MM (sy-MM). Herein, we analyzed some predictors of development of sy-MM. In 144 patients with SMM, we also compared the risk of progression predicted by bone marrow plasma cell (BMPC) involvement on the bone marrow biopsy (BMB) versus bone marrow aspirates (BMA).

Catheter ablation of atrial tachycardia after interatrial defect repair with patch apposition.

A 54-year-old woman with history of septal atrial mixoma surgically treated and drug-refractory supraventricular tachyarrhythmia underwent catheter ablation of macro-reentry areas near the pericardial patch placed to repair an interatrial defect. The use of ablative therapy has been successful to cure this arrhythmia.

Pulmonary embolism and acute cytomegalovirus infection in an immunocompetent patient.

A case of an immunocompetent man with acute CMV infection associated with a pulmonary embolism is described. Acute CMV infection could be a risk factor for developing thromboembolism. Pulmonary embolism should be included in differential diagnosis in patients with acute CMV infections and pulmonary opacities.
