Article Synopsis
  • ATRA and ATO are the main treatments for low to medium risk acute promyelocytic leukaemia (APL), but many patients (60%) can have a side effect called leucocytosis, which means very high white blood cell counts.
  • Researchers studied 65 APL patients and found that those with lower levels of important blood proteins (like fibrinogen) and higher amounts of cancer cells in their bone marrow were more likely to have leucocytosis when treated with ATRA and ATO.
  • Leucocytosis can lead to other serious problems, so doctors need to keep a close eye on patients with these risk factors to help prevent issues and give extra treatments if needed.

Article Synopsis
  • - Marginal zone lymphomas (MZL) are a group of related subtypes that currently lack a standardized prognostic score for patients requiring systemic therapy.
  • - Researchers developed a prognostic model based on a study of 501 patients, identifying five important factors that significantly affect progression-free survival (PFS) and creating three risk categories: low, intermediate, and high.
  • - The newly proposed MZL International Prognostic Index (MZL-IPI) has been validated in multiple patient cohorts, showing reliable predictive value for both PFS and overall survival (OS) among MZL patients undergoing treatment.

Sleep of migraine patients is ameliorated by ketogenic diet, independently of pain control.

Sleep Med

July 2023

Clinical Neurology, Sleep Medicine Center, Udine University Hospital, Udine, Italy; Dipartimento di Area Medica (DAME), University of Udine, Udine, Italy.

Objective/background: Migraine patients are frequently affected by sleep complaints. The ketogenic diet (KD) is an option for the treatment of migraine. Our aim was: 1) to assess the effects of KD on sleep complaints in patients affected by migraine and 2) to verify if sleep changes were related to the effects of the diet on headache symptoms.

Inositols are natural molecules involved in several biochemical and metabolic functions in different organs and tissues. The term "inositols" refers to five natural stereoisomers, among which myo-Inositol (myo-Ins) is the most abundant one. Several mechanisms contribute to regulate cellular and tissue homeostasis of myo-Ins levels, including its endogenous synthesis and catabolism, transmembrane transport, intestinal adsorption and renal excretion.

Glucose alterations are associated with impaired cognition. The 1-h-post-load plasma glucose ≥155 mg/dl in non-diabetic subjects confers an increased risk of cardiovascular events and diabetes. This pilot study aimed to investigate whether the 1-h-post-load plasma glucose ≥155 mg/dl negatively affects the subcortical regions of the brain and the cognitive functions.

Energy-based devices are becoming a popular option for minimally invasive vaginal procedures. The aim of this study was to obtain information on the frequency of occurrence of adverse effects (AEs) related to vaginal erbium laser (VEL™) treatment. The global survey was conducted among practitioners using the non-ablative VEL™ (Fotona, Ljubljana, Slovenia).

Cancer immunotherapy has significantly improved the management of many malignancies in recent years. Although cervical cancer is the second most common women's cancer in the world, there are still few information about the role of checkpoint inhibitors in this neoplasm, especially in the neoadjuvant setting. In the present study, we retrieved 38 consecutive patients with squamous cell cervical cancer who underwent platinum-based neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NACT) followed by radical surgery.

Development and validation of the ID-EC - the ITALIAN version of the identify chronic migraine.

J Headache Pain

February 2019

Department of Clinical and Molecular Medicine, Regional Referral Headache Centre, Sant'Andrea Hospital, Sapienza University, Rome, Italy.

Background: Case-finding tools, such as the Identify Chronic Migraine (ID-CM) questionnaire, can improve detection of CM and alleviate its significant societal burden. We aimed to develop and validate the Italian version of the ID-CM (ID-EC) in paper and as a smart app version in a headache clinic-based setting.

Methods: The study investigators translated and adapted to the Italian language the original ID-CM questionnaire (ID-EC) and further implemented it as a smart app.

Background: Genotypic resistance test (GRT) performed in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) represents a chance to evaluate resistance in virologically suppressed HIV infected patients.

Objectives: To evaluate the impact of baseline resistance detected through PBMC GRT on virological rebound after switching treatment.

Study Design: Baseline genotypic susceptibility scores (GSS) from PBMC GRT (DNA-GSS) and from previous cumulative plasma GRTs (when available, pRNA-GSS) were evaluated.

The advent of modern treatments together with the improvement of the surgical techniques has significantly increased 5-year survival rates of young patients with cancer. Although the deleterious effects of chemotherapy and radiation are well documented, controversies exist about the effect of cancer itself on semen parameters before treatment. We collected data on 236 patients representative of different types of cancers reoffered at our institution for sperm cryopreservation with the aim to correlate the pre-freeze semen parameters with type of cancer, disease stage and with semen quality of 102 fertile and healthy men.

Mutations in the mitofusin 2 (MFN2) gene cause CMT2A the most common form of autosomal dominant axonal Charcot-Marie-Tooth (CMT). In addition, mutations in MFN2 have been shown to be responsible for Hereditary Motor Sensory Neuropathy type VI (HSMN VI), a rare early-onset axonal CMT associated with optic neuropathy. Most reports of HMSN VI presented with a sub-acute form of optic neuropathy.

In order to evaluate the predictive value of positron emission tomography-computed tomography (PET/CT) in discriminating the presence of a Richter's syndrome (RS) or a second malignancy (SM), as well as to evaluate its prognostic value in patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL), we retrospectively analyzed the data of 90 patients who, in the suspicion of a RS or a SM, underwent PET/CT followed by the biopsy of the involved tissue. The median maximum Standardized Uptake Value (SUV max) in the presence of a CLL/small lymphocytic lymphoma, a diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL), a Hodgkin lymphoma (HL), a SM were 3.5, 14.

Background: Smoldering multiple myeloma (SMM) presents a high risk of progression to symptomatic MM (sy-MM). Herein, we analyzed some predictors of development of sy-MM. In 144 patients with SMM, we also compared the risk of progression predicted by bone marrow plasma cell (BMPC) involvement on the bone marrow biopsy (BMB) versus bone marrow aspirates (BMA).
