: Arterial stiffness (AS) is an independent predictor of cardiovascular events and is associated with a poor prognosis. While AS may represent a novel therapeutic target, recent evidence shows that it is sexually dimorphic. The aim of this study was to evaluate relative sex differences in arterial stiffness and their possible impact on the outcome of acute ischemic stroke.

Cryptogenic stroke as a working diagnosis: the need for an early and comprehensive diagnostic work-up.

In the Nordic Atrial Fibrillation and Stroke (NOR-FIB) study, the causes of ischemic stroke were identified in 43% of cryptogenic stroke patients monitored with implantable cardiac monitor (ICM), but one-third of these patients had non-cardioembolic causes. These results suggest the need for an early and comprehensive diagnostic work-up before inserting an ICM.

CT urography is a single term used to refer to different scanning protocols that can be applied for a number of clinical indications. If, on the one hand, this highlights the role of the radiologist in deciding the most suitable technique to perform according to the patient's needs, on the other hand, a certain confusion may arise due to the different technical and clinical variables that have to be taken into account. This has been well demonstrated by a previous work based on an online questionnaire administered to a population of Italian radiologists that brought out similarities as well as differences across the national country.

Over the past few years, the possibility of modulating fast brain oscillatory activity in the gamma () band through transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) has been discussed in the context of both cognitive enhancement and therapeutic scenarios. However, the effects of tACS targeting regions outside the motor cortex, as well as its spatial specificity, are still unclear. Here, we present a concurrent tACS-fMRI block design study to characterize the impact of 40 Hz tACS applied over the left and right dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) in healthy subjects.

Markers of Atrial Cardiopathy in Severe Embolic Strokes of Undetermined Source.

Background And Purpose: The current definition of embolic strokes of undetermined source (ESUS) seems to be too broad, including strokes due to heterogeneous mechanisms, such as atrial cardiopathy and other occult cardiac conditions, aortic arch plaques, and non-stenosing atherosclerosis, that can be differently associated with clinical stroke severity at the time of presentation. The aim of our study was to assess the possible association between neurological deficit severity and presence of markers of atrial cardiopathy in ESUS.

Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of a cohort of 226 ESUS patients (105 M, 121 F), that were divided into two groups according to the severity of neurological deficit (99 mild strokes with NIHSS ≤ 5 and 127 severe strokes with NIHSS >5).

Purpose: Non-occlusive mesenteric ischemia (NOMI) is a misdiagnosed and dangerous condition. To our knowledge, a comprehensive evaluation of CT parameters that can predict the outcome of patients suffering from NOMI is still missing.

Materials And Methods: Contrast-enhanced CT examination of 84 patients with a confirmed diagnosis of NOMI (37 with clinical and laboratory confirmation and 47 biopsy or surgery proven) was retrospectively reviewed by assessing vessels, mesentery, bowel, and peritoneal cavity CT quantitative and dichotomous parameters, and data were analyzed with Fisher's test.

Background: During Covid-19 pandemic, the Italian National Healthcare Service has faced increasing pressure, especially in Northern Italy. Even in less-affected regions, such as Tuscany, the changes in the healthcare system to prevent Covid-19 spread resulted in difficulty in treating time-dependent disorders like ischemic stroke rapidly.

Objective: The aim of our study was to assess the outcome after acute ischemic stroke treatments during the Covid-19 spread in comparison with a similar period of the previous year in Siena-Hospital (Hub center in the South-East Tuscany).

Palliation of malignant esophageal obstruction using an anti-migration self-expandable metal stent: Results of a prospective multicenter study.

Background: Self-expanding metal stents (SEMS) placement is primarily indicated to palliate dysphagia for patients with expected short-term survival. Methods: This is a prospective study including patients with inoperable esophageal cancer that received a FCSEMS-AMS (Taewoong, Niti-S Beta™), in five tertiary-care endoscopic centers from January 2014 to February 2016.

Non-stenosing Carotid Atherosclerosis and Arterial Stiffness in Embolic Stroke of Undetermined Source.

Recent findings suggested that non-stenosing atherosclerosis (NSA) may play an important pathogenic role, especially in cryptogenic strokes. Furthermore, arterial stiffness has been suggested to be a useful tool in identifying patients with embolic stroke of undetermined source (ESUS) with poor neurological prognosis. In this view, the aim of our study was to assess the association between carotid NSA and arterial stiffness in ESUS patients, in order to better define the cardiovascular risk profile of this subgroup of patients.
