Background: This systematic review analyzes the impact of COVID-19 on dementia patients' functional, cognitive, neuropsychiatric, and health related outcomes. It hypothesizes that dementia patients infected with SARS-CoV-2experience more pronounced deterioration compared to those who are uninfected.

Methods: Research from 01/03/2020 to 07/10/2023 was conducted using Medline, Web of Science, and Embase databases, and adhering to PRISMA guidelines and the PICO framework.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aims to provide updated evidence for managing stage I colon cancer (CC) post-surgery, focusing on recurrence rates and risk factors.
  • Despite low recurrence risk, some guidelines suggest intensive follow-up is unnecessary, but data on actual recurrence rates is limited.
  • The findings reveal a 5% recurrence rate, primarily systemic, with significant risk factors including tumor characteristics and patient demographics, suggesting a need for improved postoperative follow-up strategies.

Background: As for squamous (Sq)-NSCLC, Checkmate-017 trial showed a significant overall survival (OS) improvement in favor of Nivolumab (Nivo) over Docetaxel in 2nd-line. We hypothesized that anticipating Nivo use, as early switch maintenance after 1st-line chemotherapy (CHT), might have improved survival as compared to delayed 2nd-line treatment.

Methods: EDEN was an open-label, 2-arm, phase III study which randomized (1:1) stage IIIB/IV Sq-NSCLC pts non-progressive after 1st-line platinum-based CHT, to receive early Nivo as switch maintenance (Arm A) or standard best supportive care followed by 2nd-line Nivo at disease progression (Arm B).

Role of carglumic acid in the long-term management of propionic and methylmalonic acidurias.

Orphanet J Rare Dis

December 2024

Pediatric Unit, Reference Center for Inborn Errors of Metabolism, University Hospital of Nancy, INSERM UMR_S 1256, Nutrition, Genetics, and Environmental Risk Exposure (NGERE), Faculty of Medicine of Nancy, University of Lorraine, Nancy, France.

Propionic aciduria (PA) and methylmalonic aciduria (MMA) are rare inherited disorders caused by defects in the propionate metabolic pathway. PA due to propionyl coenzyme A carboxylase deficiency results in accumulation of propionic acid, while in MMA, deficiency in methylmalonyl coenzyme A mutase leads to accumulation of methylmalonic acid. Hyperammonemia is related to a secondary deficiency of N-acetylglutamate (NAG), the activator of carbamoyl phosphate synthetase 1, which is an irreversible rate-limiting enzyme in the urea cycle.

Background: Malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM) is primarily treated with a combination therapy based on lung pleurectomy in the early stage or pemetrexed combined with platinum-based chemotherapy in the late stage. However, these standard therapies do not significantly improve survival and are associated with significant adverse reactions.

Case Description: In February 2017, a 63-year-old male patient was admitted to Department of Thoracic Surgery, The Third Affiliated Hospital of Chongqing Medical University coughing for 1 month and experienced chest tightness and chest pain for 2 days.

Background & Aims: Noninvasive tests (NITs) for ruling-out clinical significant portal hypertension (CSPH) and high-risk varices (HRVs) in patients with primary biliary cholangitis (PBC) and compensated advanced chronic liver disease (cACLD) are lacking. We evaluated NITs in these patients and the influence of cholestasis on their performance.

Methods: Consecutive patients from the "Italian PBC registry" and 2 United Kingdom large-volume PBC referral centers with upper endoscopy within 6 months from biochemical evaluation and transient elastography were included.

Resuscitation With Placental Circulation Intact Compared With Cord Milking: A Randomized Clinical Trial.

JAMA Netw Open

December 2024

Careggi University Hospital, Department of Neuroscience, Psychology, Drug Research and Child Health, University of Florence, Firenze, Italy.

Importance: Among preterm newborns undergoing resuscitation, delayed cord clamping for 60 seconds is associated with reduced mortality compared with early clamping. However, the effects of longer durations of cord clamping with respiratory support are unknown.

Objective: To determine whether resuscitating preterm newborns while keeping the placental circulation intact and clamping the cord after a long delay would improve outcomes compared with umbilical cord milking.

Background: Receiving communication of positivity for metabolic diseases at Expanded Newborn Screening can be extremely stressful for parents, both in case of false positive and true positive cases. However, little is known about the predictors of distress and differential impact on mothers and fathers.

Methods: In this longitudinal study, 169 fathers and 171 mothers referred to one of the Italian metabolic centres for communication of positivity completed a survey including General Health Questionnaire-12, Emotion Thermometers (measuring stress, anxiety, depression, anger and need for help), Impact of Event Scale-Revised, Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support and Emotion Regulation Questionnaire.

Samples from 34 adult patients newly diagnosed with core binding factor leukemia (CBFL) were collected both at the time of diagnosis and at relapse and were centrally analyzed. Eligible patients received either standard induction CT known as "3 + 7" or an equivalent regimen, according to the recruiting center's policy. Patients who achieved CR or CRi received 3 courses of high-dose ARA-C (Cytarabine) 3000 mg/m every 12 h on days 1, 3, and 5, along with midostaurin at the dose of 50 mg b.

Importance: Invasive intracranial pressure (ICP) is the standard of care in patients with acute brain injury (ABI) with impaired consciousness. The Neurological Pupil Index (NPi) obtained by automated pupillometry is promising for noninvasively estimating ICP.

Objectives: To evaluate the association between repeated NPi and invasive ICP values.

Background: Sex may impact clinical outcomes in patients with stroke treated with dual antiplatelet therapy (DAPT). We aimed to investigate the sex differences in the short-term outcomes of DAPT within a real-world population of patients with noncardioembolic mild-to-moderate ischemic stroke or high-risk transient ischemic attack.

Methods: We performed a propensity score-matched analysis from a prospective multicentric cohort study (READAPT [Real-Life Study on Short-Term Dual Antiplatelet Treatment in Patients With Ischemic Stroke or Transient Ischemic Attack]) by including patients with noncardioembolic mild-to-moderate stroke (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale score of 0-10) or high-risk transient ischemic attack (age, blood pressure, clinical features, duration of transient ischemic attack, presence of diabetes [ABCD] ≥4) who initiated DAPT within 48 hours of symptom onset.

Acquired Aplastic Anemia (AAA) is a rare disease involving primary bone marrow failure with consequent pancytopenia. The addition of the synthetic thrombopoietin-receptor agonist eltrombopag (ELT) to standard immunosuppression for the treatment of AAA has led to improvements in hemopoietic outcomes of AAA. Most of the data on the use of ELT for AAA was based on a maximum of 6 months of therapy.
