Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the most common primary liver cancer and the third leading cause of death worldwide. The management of HCC is complex, with surgical treatment providing long-term survival in eligible patients. This study aims to present the experience of aggressive surgical management of HCC in Greece.

Small heat shock proteins (sHSPs) are ubiquitous ATP-independent chaperones that contribute to the maintenance of proteome integrity and functionality. Recent evidence suggests that sHSPs are ubiquitously expressed in numerous types of tumors and have been proposed to be implicated in oncogenesis and malignant progression. Heat shock protein family B member 2 (HSPB2) is a member of the sHSPs, which is found to be expressed, among others, in human breast cancer cell lines and constitutes an inhibitor of apical caspase activation in the extrinsic apoptotic pathway.

Introduction In this retrospective study, the safety and complication rates of port implantations via the internal jugular vein under ultrasound and fluoroscopy guidance in adult oncology patients were analyzed. Material and methods Eight hundred seven ports implanted in 799 adult oncology patients at a tertiary Oncology-Anticancer Hospital during a 36-month period from January 1, 2017 to December 31, 2019 were retrospectively reviewed. Data acquisition was obtained until December 31, 2020.

Bone and joint infections are associated with a devastating global burden. The successful treatment of these infections requires a multidisciplinary approach between orthopedic surgeons and experts of different disciplines. This multidisciplinary approach has gained ground over the past decades in modern infection units as a more effective treatment strategy, yielding better outcomes regarding infection eradication rates, length of hospital stay, and overall cost of treatments.

Background: Angiogenesis is a hallmark of breast cancer (BC) and is mediated by the vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) signaling axis. It is regulated by different proangiogenic factors, including platelet-derived growth factor-CC (PDGF-CC) and heparin-binding EGF-like growth factor (HB-EGF), as well as co-receptors, such as neuropilin-1, which could have prognostic implications in BC patients.
Patients And Methods: We assessed the serum levels of VEGF, HB-EGF, PDGF-CC and neuropilin-1 in 205 patients with early BC (invasive, = 187; in situ, = 18) and in 31 healthy donors (HD) and investigated the potential associations with clinical and histopathological parameters.

Microglandular adenosis is a non-lobulocentric haphazard proliferation of small round glands composed of a single layer of flat to cuboidal epithelial cells. The glandular structures lack a myoepithelial layer; however, they are surrounded by a basement membrane. Its clinical course is benign, when it is not associated with invasive carcinoma.

Background: Poromas, and their malignant counterparts, porocarcinomas, harbor recurrent translocations involving YAP1-MAML2, YAP1-NUTM1, and infrequently WWTR1-NUTM1; YAP1-NUTM1 being the most common in porocarcinomas. NUT immunohistochemistry (IHC) can be used to identify NUTM1-translocated tumors. This study sought to investigate potential novel NUTM1-fusion partners among NUT IHC-positive poromas and porocarcinomas.

Objectives: The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of the application of orthodontic tooth forces on the alveolar bone distal to the loaded teeth, in ovariectomized female rats.
Methods: Twenty-four eight-month-old Wistar rats were divided into one group ovariectomized at the age of six months and one control. An orthodontic appliance delivering a mesial traction force of 60 gr* was placed on the right maxillary 1 molar of all animals for 14 days.

Objectives: The International Haemovigilance Network's (IHN) ISTARE database collects surveillance data on all adverse reactions (AR) associated with transfusion of blood and blood components, facilitating the sharing of best practice and benchmarking for improving blood safety and quality. Up to 2012, no publications discussed certain rare AR. The aim of this study is to examine ISTARE data on AR from 2012 to 2016, focusing on hypotensive reactions, post-transfusion purpura (PTP), transfusion-associated graft versus host disease (TA-GvHD), hyperkalemia and hypocalcemia.

In-depth understanding of the immune response provoked by SARS-CoV-2 infection is necessary, as there is a great risk of reinfection and a difficulty in achieving herd immunity due to a decline in both antibody concentration and avidity. Avidity testing, however, could overcome variability in the immune response associated with sex or clinical symptoms, and thus differentiate between recent and past infections. In this context, here, we analyzed SARS-CoV-2 antibody kinetics and avidity in Greek hospitalized (26%) and non-hospitalized (74%) COVID-19 patients (N = 71) in the course of up to 15 months after their infection to improve the accuracy of the serological diagnosis in dating the onset of the infection.

Background: Current treatment recommendations for high grade non-metastatic osteosarcoma include perioperative chemotherapy and surgery. Despite this intensive protocol, approximately 40% of patients will relapse. The addition of the immunomodulator mifamurtide to adjuvant cytotoxic chemotherapy was associated with a significant improvement in 6-year overall survival (OS) in young patients with resectable osteosarcoma, leading to its approval in Europe and other countries.

Biobanks constitute an integral part of precision medicine. They provide a repository of biospecimens that may be used to elucidate the pathophysiology, support diagnoses, and guide the treatment of diseases. The pilot biobank of rare malignant neoplasms has been established in the context of the Hellenic Network of Precision Medicine on Cancer and aims to enhance future clinical and/or research studies in Greece by collecting, processing, and storing rare malignant neoplasm samples with associated data.

Early recognition of coagulopathy is necessary for its prompt correction and successful management. Novel approaches, such as point-of-care testing (POC) and administration of coagulation factor concentrates (CFCs), aim to tailor the haemostatic therapy to each patient and thus reduce the risks of over- or under-transfusion. CFCs are an effective alternative to ratio-based transfusion therapies for the correction of different types of coagulopathies.

Stereotactic biopsy and open biopsy represent useful diagnostic tools of breast lesions. However, both affect the Quality of Life (QoL) in various degrees. We conducted this prospective longitudinal comparative study in order, first to access the impact of these techniques on short-term QoL and second to compare and critically discuss our results with those of literature review.

This is the first study aiming to investigate mTOR signaling and its relation to mismatch repair status (MMR status) in colorectal cancer (CRC). MMR status and the phosphorylated proteins, pmTOR and p4EBP1, have been immunohistochemically analyzed in 108 formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded CRC specimens. The correlations between them and with clinicopathological data, MAPK pathway (KRAS, NRAS, BRAF) as well as their impact on patients' overall survival have been statistically analyzed.
