Inflammation is the most common cause of most acute and chronic debilitating diseases. Towards unveiling novel therapeutic options for patients with such complications, N‑bromotaurine (TauNHBr) has emerged as a potential anti‑inflammatory agent; however, its therapeutic efficacy is hindered due to its relatively poor stability. To address this challenge, the present study focused on examining the effects of a stable active bromine compound, named bromamine T (BAT).

Breast cancer is the most common type of cancer in females and is the leading cause of cancer-associated death among women, worldwide. The present study aimed to measure the serum levels of fatty acid-binding protein 4 (FABP4), retinol binding protein 4 (RBP4) and the MMP-9/neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL) complex in women diagnosed with breast cancer. Serum levels of the examined proteins were determined in the peripheral blood of patients via ELISA.

Introduction: Salivary gland cancers (SGCs) consist of a rare family of neoplasms with varying histology and biological behavior. Therapeutic regimens have been relatively unchanged for decades. The recent successes of immunotherapy have raised hopes for the development of more effective strategies in SGC, thus emphasizing the role of tumor microenvironment (TME) in the design for more effective therapies.

Background: Tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs) and their subsets contribute to breast cancer prognosis. We investigated the prognostic impact of CD3+, CD8+ and FOXP3+ TILs in patients with early intermediate/high-risk breast cancer treated with adjuvant anthracycline-based chemotherapy within two randomized trials conducted by our Group.
Methods: We examined 1011 patients (median follow-up 130.

Background/aim: Primary sarcomas of the lung (PSL) represent a rare, largely unknown entity. We herein present a retrospective study of 26 patients diagnosed with PSL.
Patients And Methods: For a period of 10 years, the records of patients from 5 centers were gathered and analyzed.

Background/aim: Age may pertain to different tumor genotype characteristics which may interfere with treatment efficacy and prognosis. We investigated the distribution and prognostic effect of mutations and tumor infiltrating lymphocyte (stromal TIL density) in young (≤35 years) and elderly (>65 years) early breast cancer patients.
Materials And Methods: Paraffin tumor genotypes of all clinical subtypes from 345 patients were examined.

Renal impairment is associated with high mortality rates in severely ill patients. The need to prevent and treat renal damage underlines the importance of understanding the pathophysiological mechanisms that characterize it. This could also enable early diagnosis and the design of alternative therapeutic approaches.

Background: Timing and adequacy of peritoneal source control are the most important pillars in the management of patients with acute peritonitis. Therefore, early prognostic evaluation of acute peritonitis is paramount to assess the severity and establish a prompt and appropriate treatment. The objectives of this study were to identify clinical and laboratory predictors for in-hospital mortality in patients with acute peritonitis and to develop a warning score system, based on easily recognizable and assessable variables, globally accepted.

Immunotherapy (IO) with anti-PD1 inhibitors is available for the treatment of recurrent/metastatic squamous cell carcinomas of the head and neck (SCCHD) since 2016. Both nivolumab and pembrolizumab were tested in phase 3 randomized trials in adults progressing on or after platinum-based therapy and were found to confer an overall survival benefit compared to investigator's choice. However, very limited data exist concerning IO use in rare subtypes of head and neck carcinoma, like salivary gland carcinoma.

Background: Current chemotherapy regimens for the treatment of colorectal cancer (CRC) include oxaliplatin, irinotecan, and fluorouracil along with leucovorin. Cytotoxicity involves the induction of programmed cell death.
Objective: The purpose of this study was to assess the molecular effects of doxorubicin (a 14-OH derivative of the natural product daunorubicin) and common chemotherapeutic drugs (used in the clinical practice to treat CRC) on the expression of the most prominent members of the BCL2 family, namely BCL2, BAX, BCLX, and MCL1.

Background: Bladder cancer (BlCa) heterogeneity and the lack of personalised prognosis lead to patients' highly variable treatment outcomes. Here, we have analysed the utility of the GAS5 tumour-suppressor lncRNA in improving BlCa prognosis.
Methods: GAS5 was quantified in a screening cohort of 176 patients.

Objectives: Human papilloma virus (HPV) has been implicated in several types of epithelial cancer. The role of HPV in breast carcinogenesis has been a matter of debate fueled by conflicting reports in recent years. The aim of this study is to identify the prevalence of breast and cervical HPV infection in cancer patients by using a modern microarray approach.

Background/aim: During recent years, a survival advantage was reported for first-line treatment of advanced pancreatic cancer with two new regimens, FOLFIRINOX and gemcitabine/nab-paclitaxel, over gemcitabine monotherapy. Gemcitabine/nab-paclitaxel administration on days 1, 8 and 15 of a 4-week cycle is associated with some practical disadvantages. We adopted a biweekly regimen with the same dose density.

Novel molecular markers that address the heterogeneity of breast cancer (BC) and provide meaningful prognostic information for BC patients are needed. Kallikrein-related peptidase 6 (KLK6) is aberrantly expressed and functionally implicated in BC and, like other members of the KLK family, may prove a useful molecular tool for clinical management. Our objective was to assess, for the first time, the clinical relevance of KLK6 mRNA expression in BC.

miRNAs have an important role as their deregulation is linked to endometrial cancer. : A custom miScript® miRNA PCR Array was used to investigate for the first time the expression of eight miRNAs in forty-nine histologically confirmed Liquid Based cytology endometrial samples. The expression profile of the same miRNAs was also examined in sixty formalin-fixed tissue samples.

Invasive lobular carcinoma of the breast is known to produce intracellular mucin and has been recognized in single-case reports to show extracellular mucin production, as well. This latter morphology is not only rare but must also be under- or misdiagnosed. The aim was to better characterize this entity.
