Article Synopsis
  • This study investigates the genetics of syncope, a common medical condition, to improve understanding of its causes and potential outcomes.
  • A large-scale analysis of genetic data from over half a million people identified 18 genetic variants linked to syncope, most of which were newly discovered, highlighting the condition's unique genetic traits.
  • The findings suggest a relationship between syncope and cardiovascular health, indicating that genetic factors related to heart rate and blood pressure regulation could be involved, reinforcing the need for careful evaluation of patients experiencing syncope.

Introduction: This work aims to assess lower limb free flaps spontaneous sensory recovery by comparing and analyzing a single standardized reconstructive procedure, namely the free noninnervated anterolateral thigh (ALT) flap in order to evaluate which flap or patient-related factors may predict flap reinnervation.

Methods: Between January 2010 and March 2018 all nonreinnervated ALT flaps for lower limb coverage performed at our institution were screened. We excluded from the study flaps with less than 18 months of follow-up time, neurotized flaps, and those from patients who missed the last follow up.

Background: Few studies have estimated the real prevalence of neurodevelopmental disorders according to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 5th Edition (DSM-5) in Spain and worldwide. However, there are disparate prevalence figures. We consider research in this field essential to improve early detection, secondary prevention, and health planning.

We report a genome-wide association study of venous thromboembolism (VTE) incorporating 81,190 cases and 1,419,671 controls sampled from six cohorts. We identify 93 risk loci, of which 62 are previously unreported. Many of the identified risk loci are at genes encoding proteins with functions converging on the coagulation cascade or platelet function.

Type 2 diabetes (T2D) is a global health problem accompanied by an elevated risk of complications, the most common being cardiac and renal diseases. In Lebanon, the prevalence of T2D is estimated at 8-13%. Local medical practice generally suffers from clinical inertia, with gaps in the yearly assessment of clinical manifestations and suboptimal screening for major complications.

Article Synopsis
  • The study analyzed the prevalence and impact of anemia in children diagnosed with chronic myeloid leukemia (CML), highlighting that 81% of 430 patients had anemia at diagnosis, with many experiencing moderate to severe cases.
  • Moderate and severe anemia were linked to younger age, symptoms like fatigue, and higher blood cell counts, leading to delays in effective treatment response with imatinib.
  • Although anemia was common and influenced treatment outcomes, it did not significantly affect overall survival rates in pediatric CML patients.

Targeting the epigenome in malignant melanoma: Facts, challenges and therapeutic promises.

Pharmacol Ther

December 2022

Department of Cancer Genetics, Therapeutics & Ultrastructural Pathology, The Cyprus Institute of Neurology & Genetics, Nicosia, Cyprus. Electronic address:

Malignant melanoma is the most lethal type of skin cancer with high rates of mortality. Although current treatment options provide a short-clinical benefit, acquired-drug resistance highlights the low 5-year survival rate among patients with advanced stage of the disease. In parallel, the involvement of an aberrant epigenetic landscape, (e.

NEK8-Associated Nephropathies: Do Autosomal Dominant Forms Exist?

Nephron

April 2023

Department of Human Genetics, Gilbert and Rose-Marie Chagoury School of Medicine, Lebanese American University, Byblos, Lebanon.

Introduction: Nephronophthisis (NPHP) is a group of autosomal recessive renal diseases characterized by a reduced ability of the kidneys to concentrate solutes, chronic tubulointerstitial nephritis, and cystic kidney disease. It represents the most common genetic cause of childhood renal failure. To date, around 20 different genes, encoding primary cilia proteins, have been linked to NPHP.

Thyroid cancer (TC) is the most common malignancy of the endocrine system that affects the thyroid gland. It is usually treatable and, in most cases, curable. The central issues are how to improve knowledge on TC, to accurately identify cases at an early stage that can benefit from effective intervention, optimise therapy, and reduce the risk of overdiagnosis and unnecessary treatment.

Substandard and falsified antibiotics: neglected drivers of antimicrobial resistance?

BMJ Glob Health

August 2022

Lao-Oxford-Mahosot Hospital-Wellcome Trust Research Unit, Medicine Quality Research Group, Laboratory of Microbiology, Mahosot Hospital, Vientiane, Lao People's Democratic Republic

Objectives: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a significant global health threat with substandard and falsified (SF) antibiotics being neglected contributing factors. With their relationships poorly understood, more research is needed in order to determine how interventions to reduce SF antibiotics should be ranked as priorities in national AMR action plans. We assessed the evidence available on the global prevalence of SF antibiotics, examined the quality of the evidence and discussed public health impact.

The transition of foods during toddlerhood and the suboptimal diets consumed in the Middle East make children susceptible to malnutrition and micronutrient deficiencies. Based on international recommendations, coupled with the merits of clinical studies on the application of young child formula (YCF), a group of fourteen experts from the Middle East reached a consensus on improving the nutritional status of toddlers. The recommendations put forth by the expert panel comprised twelve statements related to the relevance of YCF in young children; the impact of YCF on their nutritional parameters and functional outcomes; characteristics of the currently available YCF and its ideal composition; strategies to supply adequate nutrition in young children and educational needs of parents and healthcare professionals (HCPs).

Autonomic nervous system (ANS) dysregulation is an important pathophysiological mechanism in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Heart rate variability (HRV) is a common index for ANS, and HRV has been used to explore the association between ANS and clinical illnesses. This study aimed to explore the group differences in HRV, depression, anxiety, and quality of life between participants with COPD and healthy controls (HC group), and whether emotion plays a mediating role between HRV and quality of life in participants with COPD.

Germline variants of ATG7 in familial cholangiocarcinoma alter autophagy and p62.

Sci Rep

June 2022

Intermountain Precision Genomics Program, Intermountain Healthcare, Saint George, UT, 84790, USA.

Article Synopsis
  • * A study on familial cholangiocarcinoma revealed that affected family members share a specific mutation in the ATG7 gene, which is essential for starting autophagy and forming autophagosomes.
  • * Experiments showed that the mutations in ATG7 hinder its ability to eliminate cellular waste, ultimately increasing the risk of developing cholangiocarcinoma due to impaired autophagy function.

Background: Chronic cough management necessitates a clear integrated care pathway approach. Primary care physicians initially encounter the majority of chronic cough patients, yet their role in proper management can prove challenging due to limited access to advanced diagnostic testing. A multidisciplinary approach involving otolaryngologists and chest physicians, allergists, and gastroenterologists, among others, is central to the optimal diagnosis and treatment of conditions which underly or worsen cough.
