: Psoriasis is associated with a high psychological burden and comorbidities, such as depression and anxiety. The aim of this study was to evaluate the psychopathological profile of patients with moderate-to-severe plaque psoriasis under systemic treatment and to explore the association between DLQI and alexithymia, depression, and other psychopathological disorders. : In this monocentric, prospective clinical study, 104 adult patients with moderate-to-severe plaque psoriasis were evaluated according to the disease severity (measured by PASI) influence of psoriasis on their quality of life (measured by DLQI) and their psychopathological profile (measured by the BDI, TAS-20, and SCL-90 questionnaires).

Prophylaxis Options in Children With a History of Recurrent Urinary Tract Infections: A Systematic Review.

Pediatrics

December 2024

4th Department of Pediatrics, "G.Papageorgiou" General Hospital School of Medicine, Department of Health Sciences, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Thessaloniki, Greece.

Article Synopsis
  • A systematic review and meta-analysis of studies was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of different prophylactic options for preventing urinary tract infections (UTI) in children with recurrent UTI (RUTI).
  • The analysis included 3335 participants from 23 studies, finding that cranberry products and nitrofurantoin significantly reduced the likelihood of symptomatic UTI episodes during treatment compared to other prophylactic methods like trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole.
  • Despite finding that nitrofurantoin and cranberry products may lower UTI incidence, no prophylactic option was effective in reducing kidney scarring, indicating a need for further research on non-antibiotic alternatives.

Spinal cord injuries (SCI) refer to lesions in the spinal cord due to direct trauma (traumatic SCI-TSCI), such as vehicle accidents, falls, and violent events, or other pathological conditions (non-traumatic SCI) such as metabolic disorders, inflammation, or degenerative disorders. Depending on the location of the injury, patients may experience movement and/or sense disabilities in their lower limbs, torso, or upper limbs. Even though poorly studied, it has been found that such patients have a higher risk of developing cognitive disorders, such as deficits in concentration, short and long memory, comprehension, and problem-solving, as well as mental deficits in the form of difficulty socializing and expressing emotions.

  • - Vulvovaginal candidosis (VVC) is a prevalent condition among women, but existing diagnostic methods are often inefficient and result in delayed treatment due to the need for specialized training and lengthy processes.
  • - A review of 23 studies showed that molecular diagnostic tools, particularly NAAT/PCR assays, have high sensitivity and specificity for VVC compared to traditional methods, while simpler DNA probes have lower sensitivity.
  • - Despite the advancements in molecular diagnostics, traditional methods still play an important role, especially in settings with limited resources, and emerging technologies like AI show potential to further enhance diagnosis and treatment outcomes.

Article Synopsis
  • CAD is a major global health issue, and accurate early diagnosis is essential for effective management, leading to this study comparing human evaluators' effectiveness with a Random Forest machine learning model for predicting CAD risk.
  • The research involved 606 patients and considered various clinical factors like age, cardiovascular history, and symptoms, finding that both human evaluators and the RF model performed similarly well when human assessments were included.
  • The study suggests that combining human expertise with advanced algorithms may enhance CAD diagnostics, as the RF model's accuracy dropped significantly without human input.

Article Synopsis
  • This study analyzed long-term outcomes of young patients under 65 with femoral neck fractures (FNFs) treated with closed reduction and internal fixation (CRIF) over the past decade.
  • Involving 52 patients, results showed that no cases of non-union occurred, but 17.3% developed avascular necrosis (AVN) requiring total hip arthroplasty (THA) after about 1.68 years.
  • Factors like age, trauma type, sex, and treatment conditions did not significantly impact patient outcomes, but the time from trauma to surgery was shorter for those who later underwent THA.
