AIRWAY MANAGEMENT GUIDELINES IN OBSTETRICS.

Anatomic and physiologic changes during pregnancy make it more difficult to establish a safe airway in pregnant women in case of the need for surgery under general anesthesia than in the non-obstetric population. The inability to ventilate and oxygenate is one of the most common causes of morbidity and mortality associated with general anesthesia for cesarean section. The aim of this paper is to present and analyze modern guidelines and algorithms for the management of difficult airway in obstetrics as an important segment of anesthesiology practice.

WHAT IS THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN A GYNECOLOGIST/OBSTETRICIAN AND THE AIRWAY?

Physiological changes in pregnancy as part of biohumoral and morphological changes (hyperemia, edema, hypersecretion) influence the possible problems in obstetric anesthesia. These changes by themselves, and particularly aggravated by acute or chronic gestational or non-gestational comorbidity, increase the risk of aspiration of gastric contents, failed intubation, esophageal intubation, inadequate ventilation, and respiratory failure. The types of premedication, anesthesia and techniques of anesthesia are evident from medical historiography.

EARLY TEACHING AND ADOPTION OF VIDEOLARYNGOSCOPY IN EMERGENCY MEDICINE TRAINING.

The aim of this paper is to gather and evaluate available literature about using videolaryngoscopy as a training tool for novice learners and compare it to direct laryngoscopy. Search of the available literature was performed using the MEDLINE database, through the PubMed searching tool. The inclusion criteria were that papers had to be original research and participants had to be novices in the field of airway management.

This cross-sectional study aimed to investigate the connection between meibomian gland (MG) excreta quantity and quality after MG expression (MGX), dry eye disease (DED) symptoms, and objective DED signs and to clarify the relationship between dry eye and MG function in DED pathophysiology. The study included 200 subjects, 100 with and 100 without dry eye symptoms. Schein questionnaire was used to determine the severity of dry eye symptoms and self-reported skin type for facial skin dryness self-evaluation.

How Well Did the Healthcare System Respond to the Healthcare Needs of Older People with and without Dementia during the COVID-19 Pandemic? The Perception of Healthcare Providers and Older People from the SI4CARE Project in the ADRION Region.

One major challenge during the COVID-19 pandemic was the limited accessibility to healthcare facilities, especially for the older population. The aim of the current study was the exploration of the extent to which the healthcare systems responded to the healthcare needs of the older people with or without cognitive impairment and their caregivers in the Adrion/Ionian region. Data were collected through e-questionnaires regarding the adequacy of the healthcare system and were anonymously administered to older individuals and stakeholder providers in the following countries: Slovenia, Italy (Calabria), Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Greece, Montenegro, and Serbia.

GLOSSOPHARYNGEAL NERVE AS A SOURCE OF OROFACIAL PAIN - DIAGNOSTIC AND THERAPEUTIC CHALLENGES.

Chronic neuropathic orofacial pain along with physical suffering can cause emotional, psychological and social difficulties, which significantly affects the quality of life of patients. Pain in the area of glossopharyngeal nerve innervation, especially chronic neuropathic, is relatively rare, but is significant because of the great suffering it causes to sufferers. It can be life threatening, due to the cardiac arrhythmia, syncope or convulsions it can cause.

OUT-OF-HOSPITAL CARDIAC ARREST OUTCOMES - BYSTANDER CARDIOPULMONARY RESUSCITATION RATE IMPROVEMENT.

Approximately 8000 people suffer from an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) in the Republic of Croatia every year. OHCA survival rates generally remain low despite major advances in resuscitation. Its incidence and survival rate are well known in many European countries, but reliable data on OHCA in Croatia are lacking.

The dose absorbed by sensitive breast glandular tissue in abdominal computed tomography examinations, even when the breasts are outside the primary imaging beam, is still significant. Several studies have explored using breast shielding with a protective lead sheet or a bra. Since the source of radiation in computed tomography rotates by 360° around the patient, we made a custom-tailored shielding device that wraps around the entire thorax.

Several miRNAs have been previously identified to be associated with cigarette smoke and/or the toxic metals cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb). The aim of this study was to investigate the associations of maternal cigarette smoking with cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb) levels, candidate miRNA expression and biochemical parameters across the feto-placental unit. miRNAs were isolated according to protocols provided by manufacturer from 72 healthy postpartum women using Qiagens' kits based on phenol/guanidine samples lysis and silica-membrane purification of total RNA.

Molecular Characterisation of Epstein-Barr Virus in Classical Hodgkin Lymphoma.

Hodgkin lymphomas (HLs) are a heterogeneous group of lymphoid neoplasia associated with Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection. EBV, considered to be an important etiological co-factor in approximately 1% of human malignancies, can be classified into two genotypes based on EBNA-2, EBNA-3A and EBNA-3C sequences, and into genetic variants based on the sequence variation of the gene coding for the LMP1 protein. Here, we present the results on the distribution of EBV genotypes 1 and 2 as well as gene variants in 50 patients with EBV-positive classical HL selected from a cohort of 289 histologically verified cases collected over a 9-year period in a tertiary clinical center in the Southeast of Europe.

Antibiotic prophylaxis prior to transrectal prostate biopsy in Croatia: A national survey.

Objectives: Transrectal ultrasound guided prostate biopsy (TRUSPB) is the standard of care for diagnosis of prostate cancer. Increased antibiotic resistance has led to the suspension of indication for fluoroquinolones use in prostate biopsy prophylaxis. Several classes of antibiotics have been recommended for routine use.
