Modelling sediment fluxes in the Danube River Basin with SWAT.

Sediment management is of prior concern in the Danube Basin for provision of economic and environmental services. This study aimed at assessing current (1995-2009) sediment fluxes of the Danube Basin with SWAT model and identifying sediment budget knowledge gaps. After hydrologic calibration, hillslope gross erosion and sediment yields were broadly calibrated using ancillary data (measurements in plots and small catchments, and national and European erosion maps).

Metachronous gastrointestinal stromal tumor associated with other neoplasia - case presentation.

The association of gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST), synchronous or metachronous with other tumors is reported in special literature, the most frequent being associated with other gastrointestinal tumors. GISTs are the most common mesenchymal neoplasm of the gastro-intestinal tract with a malignant potential. We present a case of 68-year-old male patient diagnosed with GIST stage IV, unreachable due to liver metastases, treated with Imatinib, diagnosed at 13 months of prostate adenocarcinoma diagnosis [treated with hormonal therapy (HT) and external beam radiotherapy (EBRT)]; at 45 months from the first neoplasia diagnosis, the patient was diagnosed with the third neoplasia - lung squamous carcinoma - right inferior lobe, for which performed EBRT.

The combination of oligo- and polysaccharides and reticulated protein for the control of symptoms in patients with irritable bowel syndrome: Results of a randomised, placebo-controlled, double-blind, parallel group, multicentre clinical trial.

Background: A medical device containing the film-forming agent reticulated protein and a prebiotic mixture of vegetable oligo- and polysaccharides has been developed, recently receiving European approval as MED class III for the treatment of chronic/functional or recidivant diarrhoea due to different causes including irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). In the present paper, we evaluate a protein preparation containing these components in comparison with placebo in adult patients with diarrhoea-predominant IBS.

Methods: In a randomised, placebo-controlled, double-blind, parallel group, multicentre clinical trial, patients were randomly assigned to receive the combination of oligo- and polysaccharides and reticulated protein and placebo (four oral tablets/day for 56 days).

Xyloglucan for the Treatment of Acute Gastroenteritis in Children: Results of a Randomized, Controlled, Clinical Trial.

Background. Xyloglucan, a film-forming agent, improves intestinal mucosa resistance to pathologic damage. The efficacy, safety, and time of onset of the antidiarrheal effect of xyloglucan were assessed in children with acute gastroenteritis receiving oral rehydration solution (ORS).

Skin spiradenocarcinoma - case presentation.

Malignant eccrine spiradenoma is an extremely rare skin tumor of sweat gland origin. The available literature data indicates that spiradenocarcinoma nearly uniformly arises from a benign preexisting spiradenoma. Etiology is unknown but previous trauma is believed being an implicated factor.

AIDS-related lymphoma in a young HIV late presenter patient.

Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) is an acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS)-indicative disease. Nowadays, NHL is rarely reported in Europe as indicative disease for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) testing. We present the case of a 22-year-old Romanian male patient without past medical history, except the swelling of a submental lymph node 11 months ago.

TOPICAL STEROID INDUCED FACIAL ROSACEIFORM DERMATITIS.

Context: Abuse of topical steroids on the face for long periods of time is a condition that needs time to cure and also methods to better observe the clinical features and for the follow-up after the cessation of steroids.

Objectives: To investigate which are the most prominent dermoscopic features of the Topical Steroid Induced Facial Rosaceiform Dermatitis(TSIFRD).

Results: All 40 patients showed telangiectasias (100%) and dermoscopic polygonal vessels.

Current status and restoration options for floodplains along the Danube River.

Floodplains are key ecosystems of riverine landscapes and provide a multitude of ecosystem services. In most of the large river systems worldwide, a tremendous reduction of floodplain area has occurred in the last 100 years and this loss continues due to pressures such as land use change, river regulation, and dam construction. In the Danube River Basin, the extent of floodplains has been reduced by 68% compared to their pre-regulation area, with the highest losses occurring in the Upper Danube and the lowest in the Danube Delta.

Invasion is one of the most consequential phenomena affecting the distribution of native species. Few in number of species, European crayfish are losing the competition with introduced North American crayfish. The spiny-cheek crayfish, Orconectes limosus, is an outstanding example, successfully competing against the native narrow-clawed crayfish, Astacus leptodactylus.

Assessment of the contamination of riparian soil and vegetation by trace metals--A Danube River case study.

The aim of this study was to assess the spatial distribution of arsenic and heavy metals (Cd, Cr, Cu Hg, Ni, Pb and Zn) in a riparian area influenced by periodical flooding along a considerable stretch of the Danube River. This screening was undertaken on soil and plant samples collected from 43 sites along 2386 km of the river, collected during the international Joint Danube Survey 3 expedition (ICPDR, 2015). In addition, data on the concentration of these elements in river sediment was used in order to describe the relationship between sediment, riparian soil and riparian plants.

Molecular analysis of phylogeographic subspecies in three Ponto-Caspian sturgeon species.

Sturgeons (Order Acipenseriformes) represent an extremely valuable natural resource that is now facing depletion. In the current study we evaluate if the traditional classification in subspecies of Acipenser gueldenstaedtii, Acipenser stellatus and Huso huso, endemic to Ponto-Caspian region is sustained by molecular analysis and if these represent Evolutionary Significant Units (ESUs) that should be managed separately in conservation programs. To examine the classification of taxonomic entities we sequenced a fragment of the mitochondrial control region in case of three sturgeon species that inhabit the North-western of Black Sea and migrate for reproduction in the Lower Danube.

The incidence of omphalocele varies between 1/2000-1/6000 births, both sexes being equally affected. We present the case of a male infant, born at term after a pregnancy that was not followed by the family doctor or by the specialist obstetrician and who died after five days.

Study of bone cells by confocal microscopy in fractures stimulated by ultrasound.

The ultrasound mechanism of action in fracture healing is still unknown. The mechanism that controls the compartment of each cell during healing process derives, possibly, from the microenvironment of said cells; studies in the field show differences of 55 to 84% between cross-sectional areas, depending on the sectioning mode. In order to assess the impact of ultrasound application to bone cells, we have examined bone tissue by help of Nikon E-600 microscope; the three-dimensional images have been obtained by Zeiss LSM 510 laser confocal microscope, from the Riken Physico-Chemical Analysis Laboratory, Japan.

Use of enzymatic tools for biomonitoring inorganic pollution in aquatic sediments: a case study (Bor, Serbia).

Background: Sediment bacterial communities are key players in biogeochemical cycling of elements in the aquatic environment. Copper mining, smelting, and processing operations located in Bor area (Serbia) are major environmental hot spots in the lower Danube Basin and Western Balkans. In the present study, we evaluate the influence of trace element (TE) concentration in sediments and physico-chemical properties of water on sediment microbial communities in water streams adjacent to the Copper Smelter Complex Bor (RTB Bor, Serbia).

Site heteroplasmy in the mitochondrial cytochrome b gene of the sterlet sturgeon Acipenser ruthenus.

Sturgeons are fish species with a complex biology. They are also characterized by complex aspects including polyploidization and easiness of hybridization. As with most of the Ponto-Caspian sturgeons, the populations of Acipenser ruthenus from the Danube have declined drastically during the last decades.

Histomorphometric study regarding the evolution under treatment of the changes appearing at the level of the gingival mucosa in diabetic children.

The values of the glucose influence the status of the periodontium, but also the periodontitis influences the glucose balance by increasing the resistance to insulin. In the case of children in the first step the gingivitis appears, than if the glucose control is not made and the dental hygiene is defective the evolution is towards advanced periodontal disease. The present histomorphometric study wants to emphasize the eventual changes that appear at the level of the gingival epithelium before and after starting a correct treatment of the periodontal disease.

Nuclear markers of Danube Sturgeons hybridization.

Acipenseriformes are composed of 25 sturgeon species and two paddlefish species distributed exclusively in the northern hemisphere. The Danube River and the Black Sea were originally inhabited by six sturgeon species but two are extinct and only four are still reproducing currently in the Lower Danube: Huso huso, Acipenser stellatus, A. gueldenstaedtii and A.

Comparative histomorphometric study of bone tissue synthesized after electric and ultrasound stimulation.

The clinical use of the alternative therapies in traumatology is conditioned by the knowledge and understanding of their actions on the bone tissue. The hereby study aims at the comparative assessment of the effectiveness of the direct current and ultrasounds in treating the fractures. Thus, we have proceeded to a comparative histological study of the bone tissue in the fractured area and the biomechanical description and the three-dimensional model of the stimulated bone's behavior by using micro-CT X-rays and the finite element analysis.

Investigation of ubiquitin deformation mechanism under induced stretch-compression loads.

Proteins folding and unfolding are conformational changes in the life of the proteins, which reveal the modifications in the organization of the molecules inside the chain. It is known that a very organized structure has great amount of entropy and tends to exchange the energy with the environment. The present work presents the results of the atomistic modeling using NAMD software released by the University of Illinois, USA, to reveal the hyper-elasticity under external loads and the progressive conformational shapes that are produced by the H-bonds breaking and recovering.

The modifications suffered by the peri-esophageal anatomical structures in the hiatal hernia disease: a qualitative and quantitative microanatomic study.

This paper presents the results of a surgical and histopathological study regarding the microanatomical modifications of the thoraco-abdominal diaphragm and of the peri-esophageal structures in the hiatal hernias, establishing a cause-effect relationship between these structural modifications and the hiatal hernia. The study was represented by two groups of patients: a control group and a group with hiatal hernia. The study method consisted in intraoperatory biopsy of fragments from the diaphragm as well as from the tissue around the esophagus, which were studied from the histopathological viewpoint, using histological methods and quantitative microanatomy.

Microbiological water quality along the Danube River: integrating data from two whole-river surveys and a transnational monitoring network.

The River Danube is, with 2780 km, the second longest river in Europe. Its catchment area covers 801 500 km(2), with approximately 81 million inhabitants in 19 countries. River water for anthropogenic use, transportation and recreation is of major importance in all of these countries.
