This is a case report of a 54-year-old patient with hepatocellular cancer under palliative chemotherapy who admitted with dyspnea on minimal exertion and peripheral oedema over the past 5 days. Echocardiogram revealed a large echogenic mass in the right atrial cavity which did not enhance with intravenous echo contrast agent, and a distended inferior vena cava (IVC) which was occluded by echogenic material with no signs of flow. To distinguish with accuracy if the thrombus was a bland or tumor thrombus, contrast-enhanced Computed Tomography (CT) was performed.

Background And Objective: The complex focal adhesion kinase (FAK)/Src and paxillin seem to play a key role in the pathogenesis and progression of cancer. The aim of this study is to evaluate the expression of these proteins in renal cell carcinomas (RCCs), considering the immunoreactive score (IRS), the positivity and the intensity, and to find any association with patients' clinical characteristics, histologic type and other pathological features that imply a possible pathophysiological or prognostic role of FAK/Src and paxillin in RCC.

Methods: Patients with RCC who had undergone partial or radical nephrectomy from January 2009 to September 2010 were eligible for this retrospective cross-sectional study.

Vascular toxicity caused by cancer treatment can present as vasospasm, arterial thrombosis, and accelerated atherosclerosis. We report a case of a 60-year-old man with metastatic renal cell carcinoma under cabozantinib treatment for 3 years who presented to the hospital with relapsing episodes of rest angina. Due to the presence of ST depression in the 12-lead electrocardiogram and elevated troponin, a non-ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction was suspected.

The evolution of ultrasound (US) techniques has greatly improved the evaluation of many parameters in dialysis vascular access, which is typically achieved through an arteriovenous fistula (AVF) or graft (AVG). These techniques include grayscale B-mode, color Doppler, power Doppler, spectral Doppler, non-Doppler US flow imaging techniques, contrast-enhanced US, and elastography. In conjunction with a patient's medical history and physical examination, US provides crucial information about the native vascular bed prior to the surgical creation of an arteriovenous anastomosis.

Curr Opin Obstet Gynecol

October 2023

Whipps Cross Hospital, Barts Health, NHS Trust, Leytonstone, London, UK.

Purpose Of Review: Fibroids are benign pelvic masses and constitute the most common gynaecological condition. They create a significant health and social burden to many women because of heavy menstrual bleeding and fibroid pressure symptoms. Many women will be faced with the dilemma of surgical management to improve their symptoms at some point of their reproductive age.

Hard-to-heal wounds can be detrimental to patients' quality of life. Currently, there is scarcity of therapeutic alternatives to mainstay surgical treatment, which uses the principles of tissue debridement, temporary wound coverage, and subsequent tissue reconstruction. Here, a new approach is proposed that harnesses the regenerative power of autologous peripheral blood, through a process termed hypoxia-adjusted preconditioning.

Hypoxia Preconditioned Plasma (HPP) and Serum (HPS) are regenerative blood-derived growth factor compositions that have been extensively examined for their angiogenic and lymphangiogenic activity towards wound healing and tissue repair. Optimization of these secretomes' growth factor profile, through adjustments of the conditioning parameters, is a key step towards clinical application. In this study, the autologous liquid components (plasma/serum) of HPP and HPS were replaced with various conditioning media (NaCl, PBS, Glucose 5%, AIM V medium) and were analyzed in terms of key pro- (VEGF-A, EGF) and anti-angiogenic (TSP-1, PF-4) protein factors, as well as their ability to promote microvessel formation in vitro.

Multiparametric magnetic resonance imaging (mpMRI) has high sensitivity but low specificity for prostate cancer (PCa) diagnosis. The aim of our systematic review was to investigate the proportion of PCa found at a repeat biopsy in patients with a negative initial prostate biopsy, despite initial positive mpMRI. Included patients had a Prostate Imaging Reporting and Data System (PI-RADS)/Likert 3-5 lesion on mpMRI prior to the initial mpMRI-targeted prostate biopsy, which was negative for PCa on histology.

Postoperative adhesions represent a frequent complication of abdominal surgery. Adhesions can result from infection, ischemia, and foreign body reaction, but commonly develop after any surgical procedure. The morbidity caused by adhesions affects quality of life and, therefore, it is paramount to continue to raise awareness and scientific recognition of the burden of adhesions in healthcare and clinical research.

Article Synopsis
  • The study reviews literature to determine how often pT0 stage occurs in patients post-radical prostatectomy and its outcomes.
  • The incidence of pT0 is low, found in 0.07% to 1.3% of cases, with predictors including low-grade cancer in a single biopsy core and high prostate volume.
  • While the prognosis for pT0 patients is generally excellent, regular follow-up is recommended due to the unpredictable nature of this finding.
