Article Synopsis
  • Acute bronchiolitis is a major cause of lower respiratory infections and hospitalizations in children under one year old, prompting a study at the Teaching Hospital in Siena, Italy.
  • A retrospective study analyzed 36,031 pediatric ED visits from September 2018 to April 2023, identifying 383 cases of bronchiolitis, which were more frequent in younger children and associated with higher admission rates based on severity.
  • The findings suggest implementing better collaboration between hospital services and community care to ensure timely diagnoses and reduce unnecessary ED visits for mild cases of bronchiolitis.

Introduction: Since 2012, the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) promotes a point prevalence survey (PPS) of HAIs in European acute care hospitals. Through a retrospective analysis of 2012, 2015 and 2017 PPS of HAIs performed in a tertiary academic hospital in Italy, we developed a model to predict the risk of HAI.

Methods: Following ECDC protocol we surveyed 1382 patients across three years.

BackgroundThere is considerable variability in COVID-19 outcomes among younger adults, and some of this variation may be due to genetic predisposition.MethodsWe combined individual level data from 13,888 COVID-19 patients (n = 7185 hospitalized) from 17 cohorts in 9 countries to assess the association of the major common COVID-19 genetic risk factor (chromosome 3 locus tagged by rs10490770) with mortality, COVID-19-related complications, and laboratory values. We next performed metaanalyses using FinnGen and the Columbia University COVID-19 Biobank.

Background: A rapid detection of Legionella bacteria in water samples is crucial to minimize the risk of acquiring infections, especially in health care facilities. Different detection methods and different decontamination procedures have been reported to affect the recovery of Legionella spp. Our goal was to test the recovery of Legionella pneumophila and Legionella non-pneumophila species using a kit based on non-specific and species-specific probes to treat water samples after two different decontamination procedures.

Surgical site infections are the second major cause of hospital acquired infections, accounting for a large part of overall annual medical costs. Airborne particulate is known to be a potential carrier of pathogenic bacteria. We assessed a mobile air particle filter unit for improvement of air quality in an operating room (OR).

Background: Timing and adequacy of peritoneal source control are the most important pillars in the management of patients with acute peritonitis. Therefore, early prognostic evaluation of acute peritonitis is paramount to assess the severity and establish a prompt and appropriate treatment. The objectives of this study were to identify clinical and laboratory predictors for in-hospital mortality in patients with acute peritonitis and to develop a warning score system, based on easily recognizable and assessable variables, globally accepted.

Association between air changes and airborne microbial contamination in operating rooms.

J Infect Public Health

March 2020

Department of Molecular and Developmental Medicine, University of Siena, Italy. Electronic address:

Background: Control of airborne microbial contamination is important in operating rooms (ORs). To keep airborne contamination low, guidelines should highlight the importance of air turnover. The aims of the study were: (1) to verify the association between air turnover and airborne contamination in ORs; and (2) to identify a statistical relationship between air turnover and airborne microbial contamination.

Retrospective evaluation of persistence in osteoporosis therapy with oral bisphosphonates in Italy: the TOBI study.

Aging Clin Exp Res

November 2019

Department of Medicine, Surgery and Neuroscience, University of Siena, Policlinico Le Scotte, Viale Bracci 2, 53100, Siena, Italy.

Unlabelled: The patients' persistence with osteoporosis treatments is low. This retrospective, multicenter survey showed that almost 30% of osteoporotic patients discontinued the treatment within the first 6 months and that those taking drinkable bisphosphonates were less likely to interrupt the therapy; instead, the use of generic bisphosphonates was associated to a more precocious interruption.

Purpose: Low persistence with osteoporosis medications is associated with higher fracture risk.

This multicenter retrospective study included 101 patients (median age 62 years) with secondary plasma cell leukemia (sPCL). The median time from initial multiple myeloma diagnosis to sPCL was 31 months. Fifty-five out of 72 patients (75%) who received any therapy were treated with immunomodulators (IMiDs) and/or proteasome inhibitors (PIs), and 14/72 (19%) underwent salvage autologous stem cell transplantation (ASCT).

Public Health since the beginning: Neonatal incubators safety in a clinical setting.

J Infect Public Health

December 2018

Department of Molecular and Developmental Medicine, University of Siena, Italy. Electronic address:

Background: The role of environmental cleaning as an effective measure to contain the diffusion of Healthcare Associated Infections (HAIs) has already been demonstrated. Among medical devices, neonatal incubators have been recognized as a source of pathogens involved in the spread of HAIs. Aim of the study was to assess the efficacy of a disinfection protocol for neonatal incubators.

Introduction: Contamination of hospital surfaces plays an important role in the transmission of several healthcare-associated microorganisms, therefore methods for evaluating hospital surfaces' cleaning gain particular importance. Among these, there are visual inspection, quantitative microbiology, fluorescent markers and adenosine triphosphate (ATP) bioluminescence. The latter seems to provide interesting features, detecting the presence of ATP on surface (as Relative Light Units, RLU), a proxy of organic matter and microbial contamination.

Background: Risk management is a set of actions to recognize or identify risks, errors and their consequences and to take the steps to counter it. The aim of our study was to apply FMECA (Failure Mode, Effects and Criticality Analysis) to the Activated Protein C resistance (APCR) test in order to detect and avoid mistakes in this process.

Methods: We created a team and the process was divided in phases and sub phases.

Use of a fluorescent marker for assessing hospital bathroom cleanliness.

Am J Infect Control

September 2016

Department of Molecular and Developmental Medicine, Laboratory of Environmental Hygiene, University of Siena, Siena, Italy; Postgraduate School in Public Health, University of Siena, Siena, Italy. Electronic address:

A fluorescent marker was used to assess the efficacy of daily cleaning in hospital en suite bathrooms. We applied the marker on 218 surfaces and we assigned a score according how completely the mark had been removed. We found significant statistical differences among different surfaces and wards (P < .

Article Synopsis
  • Scientists created a new score to check how serious infections in the tummy area are for patients.
  • They studied over 4,500 patients in many hospitals around the world to see what factors affect survival rates.
  • The new score is very accurate in predicting if a patient will survive or not, which can help doctors make better decisions.

Nigeria has made tremendous strides towards eliminating polio and has been free of wild polio virus (WPV) for more than a year as of August 2015. However, sustained focus towards getting rid of all types of poliovirus by improving population immunity and enhancing disease surveillance will be needed to ensure it sustains the polio-free status. We reviewed the pertinent literature including published and unpublished, official reports and working documents of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) partners as well as other concerned organizations.
