Treating patients with eating disorders can be challenging for therapists, as it requires the establishment of a strong therapeutic relationship. According to the literature, therapist characteristics may influence intervention outcomes. The aim of this systematic review was to identify and synthesize existing literature on therapist interpersonal characteristics that could affect psychotherapy relationship or outcomes in the context of eating disorder treatment from both patients' and therapists' perspectives.

Metastatic clear cell sarcoma of the pancreas: A sporadic cancer.

World J Clin Cases

June 2024

Medical Oncology Unit, Humanitas Istituto Clinico Catanese, Misterbianco, Catania 95045, Italy.

Primary or secondary clear cell sarcoma of the pancreas is an exceedingly rare and aggressive disease. In addition to pathology, molecular analysis is pivotal in differential diagnosis, especially with malignant melanoma. A key aspect in identifying clear cell sarcoma is specific genetic alterations, notably the translocation of t(12;22) (q13;q13), a diagnostic hallmark of this sarcoma subtype, which is absent in malignant melanoma.

Background: The association between depression and dementia is still unclear, particularly regarding depression as a potential risk factor preceding dementia. Therefore, we aimed to verify if the presence of depression at baseline may increase the risk of dementia and cognitive impairment during 15 years of follow-up in the SHARE (Survey of Health, Aging and Retirement in Europe) study.

Methods: Depressive symptoms were defined using the EURO-D, with a score ≥4 indicative of depression.

  • Postpartum depression (PPD) is a common but complex condition influenced by hormonal changes, brain chemistry, and other factors, and is increasingly recognized as distinct from major depressive disorder.
  • Traditional treatments like selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) such as sertraline are commonly used, but new medications like brexanolone and zuranolone have been approved, with ongoing research into newer neurosteroids and alternative therapies like esketamine.
  • A more personalized approach to treatment, incorporating both medication and non-drug methods like brain stimulation and light therapy, is becoming standard in managing PPD.

Background: Over the last two decades, tumor-derived RNA expression signatures have been developed for the two most commonly diagnosed tumors worldwide, namely prostate and breast tumors, in order to improve both outcome prediction and treatment decision-making. In this context, molecular signatures gained by main components of the tumor microenvironment, such as cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs), have been explored as prognostic and therapeutic tools. Nevertheless, a deeper understanding of the significance of CAFs-related gene signatures in breast and prostate cancers still remains to be disclosed.

Sarcopenia is a prevalent and clinically significant condition, particularly among older age groups and those with chronic disease. Patients with cancer frequently suffer from sarcopenia and progressive loss of muscle mass, strength, and function. The complex interplay between cancer and its treatment, including medical therapy, radiotherapy, and surgery, significantly contributes to the onset and worsening of sarcopenia.

An estimated 30 % of Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) patients exhibit resistance to conventional antidepressant treatments. Identifying reliable biomarkers of treatment-resistant depression (TRD) represents a major goal of precision psychiatry, which is hampered by the clinical and biological heterogeneity. To uncover biologically-driven subtypes of MDD, we applied an unsupervised data-driven framework to stratify 102 MDD patients on their neuroimaging signature, including extracted measures of cortical thickness, grey matter volumes, and white matter fractional anisotropy.

Health assessment and preventive maintenance of structures are mandatory to predict injuries and to schedule required interventions, especially in seismic areas. Structural health monitoring aims to provide a robust and effective approach to obtaining valuable information on structural conditions of buildings and civil infrastructures, in conjunction with methodologies for the identification and, sometimes, localization of potential risks. In this paper a low-cost solution for structural health monitoring is proposed, exploiting a customized embedded system for the acquisition and storing of measurement signals.

Primary open angle glaucoma (POAG) is defined as a "genetically complex trait", where modifying factors act on a genetic predisposing background. For the majority of glaucomatous conditions, DNA variants are not sufficient to explain pathogenesis. Some genes are clearly underlying the more "Mendelian" forms, while a growing number of related polymorphisms in other genes have been identified in recent years.

  • The study compares the effectiveness of endoscopic ultrasound-guided liver biopsy (EUS-LB) and percutaneous liver biopsy (PC-LB) based on data from randomized controlled trials (RCTs).
  • Both biopsy methods showed similar sample adequacy and diagnostic accuracy, but PC-LB resulted in longer, non-fragmented tissue specimens.
  • Ultimately, while EUS-LB and PC-LB are comparable in diagnosis, PC-LB offers an advantage in specimen length according to the findings.

Mechanisms Underlying the Effects of Chloroquine on Red Blood Cells Metabolism.

Int J Mol Sci

June 2024

Department of Chemical, Biological, Pharmaceutical and Environmental Sciences, University of Messina, 98166 Messina, Italy.

Chloroquine (CQ) is a 4-aminoquinoline derivative largely employed in the management of malaria. CQ treatment exploits the drug's ability to cross the erythrocyte membrane, inhibiting heme polymerase in malarial trophozoites. Accumulation of CQ prevents the conversion of heme to hemozoin, causing its toxic buildup, thus blocking the survival of Plasmodium parasites.

Nutrients removal in overloaded WWTP by intermittently aerated IFAS: Effects of biofilm carrier and intermittent aeration cycle.

J Environ Manage

August 2024

Department of Engineering and Architecture, University of Enna ''Kore'', Cittadella Universitaria, 94100, Enna, Italy. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • Updating the Urban Waste Water Treatment Directive will enforce stricter nutrient removal regulations, posing challenges for small-to-medium wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs).
  • Integrating intermittent aeration (IA) with integrated fixed-film activated sludge (IFAS) technologies shows promise in meeting these new demands.
  • The study found that using sponge biofilm carriers provides better nutrient removal and stability compared to plastic, suggesting that optimizing IA cycles can enhance the treatment process under overloaded conditions.

The aging of the periocular region has always aroused great interest. A fresh, young, and attractive sight determined an ever-greater attention to surgical and non-surgical techniques to obtain this result. In particular, the change in the concept of a young look, considered then "full", led to the increasing use of surgical (fat grafting) or medical (hyaluronic acid) filling techniques.

Sarcopenic obesity and health outcomes: An umbrella review of systematic reviews with meta-analysis.

J Cachexia Sarcopenia Muscle

August 2024

Clinical Nutrition and Dietetics Unit, Fondazione IRCCS Policlinico San Matteo, Pavia, Italy.

Many studies support the idea that sarcopenic obesity (SO) could be considered a potential risk factor for negative health outcomes. These results have been inconsistent, and no umbrella reviews exist regarding this topic. Several databases until November 2023 were searched for systematic reviews with meta-analysis of observational studies (cross-sectional, case-control and prospective).

AT-rich interaction domain 1 () is a pivotal gene with a significant role in gastrointestinal tumors which encodes a protein referred to as BAF250a or SMARCF1, an integral component of the SWI/SNF (SWItch/sucrose non-fermentable) chromatin remodeling complex. This complex is instrumental in regulating gene expression by modifying the structure of chromatin to affect the accessibility of DNA. Mutations in have been identified in various gastrointestinal cancers, including colorectal, gastric, and pancreatic cancers.
