This article proposes the synthesis and characterization of (triethylene glycol dimethacrylate-N,N-dihydroxyethyl-p-toluidine) TEGDMA-DHEPT self-healing microcapsules for their inclusion in dental composite formulations. The obtaining method is the in situ emulsion polymerization of the (poly urea-formaldehyde) (PUF) coatings. The microcapsules were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), and low-field nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) techniques.

Access to the internet and online resources changes the concept of health and increases people's autonomy. In this context, Health Literacy (HL) is a critical determinant of health-related choices. At World Health Organization (WHO) level, M-POHL (Action Network on Measuring Population and Organizational Health Literacy of WHO-Europe) created and validated on European population four questionnaires: digital HL (HLS19-DIGI), communication HL (with doctors from health care services - HLS19-COM-P-Q11 long version and HLS19-COM-P-Q6 short version), online navigation HL (HLS19-NAV), and vaccination HL (HLS19-VAC).

Receptor tyrosine kinases (RTKs) are key cell surface receptors involved in cell communication and signal transduction, with great importance in cell growth, differentiation, survival, and metabolism. Dysregulation of RTKs, such as EGFR, VEGFR, HER2 or ROR, could lead to various diseases, particularly cancers. ROR1 has emerged as a promising target in hematological malignancies.

Article Synopsis
  • Hepatic disease is a major issue for children with cystic fibrosis (CF), but its link to specific genetic factors remains unclear; this study investigates these connections in a Romanian pediatric population.
  • The study involved 71 children with CF, comparing 25 with hepatic disease to 46 without, collecting data on CFTR genotypes and SERPINA1 alleles; results showed a common genotype (DF508/DF508) but no significant genetic associations with hepatic disease.
  • Although the study found no strong links between genetics and liver complications, children with hepatic disease showed higher fibrosis scores and a trend towards delayed CF diagnosis, highlighting the need for early identification and monitoring of liver health in CF patients.

Male fertility is preserved following ixekizumab treatment-a real life pilot study.

Rheumatology (Oxford)

November 2024

Unit of Immunology, Rheumatology, Allergy and Rare Diseases, IRCCS San Raffaele Hospital, Milan, Italy.

Introduction: Preserving fertility is crucial when managing male patients with spondyloarthritis (SpA) and/or psoriasis (PsO), especially in young men. Chronic inflammation, hormonal dysregulation, and immunosuppressive therapies can negatively impact male fertility. Over the past decades, positive data have emerged regarding the reproductive safety of various therapies in men.

Nigella sativa oil attenuates inflammation and oxidative stress in experimental myocardial infarction.

BMC Complement Med Ther

October 2024

Pharmacology, Toxicology and Clinical Pharmacology, Department of Morphofunctional Sciences, "Iuliu Haţieganu" University of Medicine and Pharmacy, Victor Babeș, No 8, Cluj-Napoca, 400012, Romania.

Background: A growing interest in using Nigella sativa oil (NSO) in the prevention or treatment of several cardiovascular diseases has prompted this study. The research aims to investigate the effect of NSO on cardiac damage prevention after long-term administration in induced myocardial infarction (MI) in rats.

Methods: NSO was analyzed for its fatty acids composition using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis and administered in rats before and after isoproterenol (45 mg/kg body weight) induced myocardial infarction.

The role of inflammation biomarkers in carotid artery stenosis procedures.

Ann Vasc Surg

January 2025

Department of Medical and Surgical Sciences, University "Magna Graecia" of Catanzaro, Catanzaro, Italy; Interuniversity Center of Phlebolymphology (CIFL), International Research and Educational Program in Clinical and Experimental Biotechnology, University "Magna Graecia" of Catanzaro, Catanzaro, Italy. Electronic address:

Background: Carotid revascularization procedures, such as carotid endarterectomy (CEA) and carotid artery stenting (CAS), can lead to restenosis. Monitoring restenosis onset through biomarkers is crucial in clinical practice. This study aimed to evaluate inflammation biomarkers in CEA and CAS to determine their predictive value for restenosis risk postprocedure.

Background And Aims: The world healthcare systems are currently challenged by the accumulating burden of colorectal cancer (CRC), and cancer registries represent an important segment for prevention and developing management plans, being useful in providing data regarding incidence, mortality, survival, exposure to carcinogens, lifestyle. Retrospective data from CRC patients in Romania was used to assess survival impact, costs, and cost-effectiveness considering three crucial aspects: pharmacology, chemo-/radio-therapy, and hospitalization for care and management of these patients.

Methods: 423 CRC patients from the Institutional Cancer Registry of the Prof.

Analysis of inflammatory biomarkers, along with the neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio (NLR) or platelet/lymphocyte ratio (PLR), supports the connection between inflammation and carcinogenesis. We conducted a retrospective observational study at the Clinical County Hospital Mureș involving patients with lung cancer. The parameters analyzed included histopathological type (NSCLC: squamous cell carcinoma or adenocarcinoma; SCLC), molecular mutations (EGFR, ALK, PD-L1), parameters from the complete blood count, inflammatory parameters, and associated comorbidities.

Background: Urate concentration and the physiological regulation of urate homeostasis exhibit clear sex differences. DNA methylation has been shown to explain a substantial proportion of serum urate variance, mediate the genetic effect on urate concentration, and co-regulate with cardiometabolic traits. However, whether urate concentration is associated with DNA methylation in a sex-dependent manner is unknown.

Pulmonary embolisms (PEs) are obstructions of the pulmonary arteries by thrombi, which are emboli and they most frequently originate from the deep venous system of the inferior limbs. Emboli can also come from the inferior vena cava, abdominal and pelvic veins, or the upper body venous system from the right atrium or ventricle of the heart. Thrombi can form inside pulmonary arteries as well.

Obesity is marked by excessive fat accumulation in the adipose tissue, which disrupts metabolic processes and causes chronic systemic inflammation. Commonly, body mass index (BMI) is used to assess obesity-related risks, predicting potential metabolic disorders. However, for a better clustering of obese patients, we must consider molecular and epigenetic changes which may be responsible for inflammation and metabolic changes.

Anticoagulation is common in patients undergoing routine musculoskeletal interventional maneuvers. Previous retrospective studies have established the safety of continuing anticoagulation with novel oral anticoagulants (NOACs) when performing this kind of interventions. Indeed, ultrasound (US)-guided interventional maneuvers have shown a superior safety profile compared to blind anatomical maneuvers.
