Introduction/objective: Emotional, mental, or psychological distress, defined as increased symptoms of depression, anxiety, and/or stress, is common in patients with chronic diseases, such as cardiovascular (CV) disease (CVD).
Methods: Literature was reviewed regarding data from studies and meta-analyses examining the impact of emotional stress on the occurrence and outcome of several CVDs (coronary disease, heart failure, hypertension, arrhythmias, stroke). These influences' pathophysiology and clinical spectrum are detailed, tabulated, and pictorially illustrated.

Background and objective The treatment of early-stage laryngeal glottic cancer involves surgery or radiotherapy, and both have similar survival rates. However, discrepancies between systematic reviews in the literature point towards the continuous need for more data. In this study, we aimed to investigate the oncologic value of surgery at an ENT university department of a tertiary hospital in Greece.

Metastasis from early-stage sebaceous carcinoma of the eyelid to the salivary glands is considered very rare, occurring in less than 3% of early-stage patients. We report the case of a 72-year-old Caucasian man with a parotid tumor. Fine needle aspiration was consistent with a salivary duct carcinoma.

Objective: This case series aimed to describe a hemostatic technique that has been applied in patients admitted to emergency department (ED) of a tertiary hospital due to recurrent episodes of intraoral hemorrhage (IOH) after various dentoalveolar operations. The "tie-over" approach involved the intraoral use of Xeroform® gauze (as compressive bolster dressing) and the oral rinsing with a liquid mixture of hemostatic agents.
Materials And Methods: Between February 1, 2014, and July 31, 2017, we retrospectively reviewed the medical data and records of patients in ED who chiefly complained about IOH.

Introduction: Recent studies have shown that patients with COVID-19, who have underlying diabetes mellitus, develop a severe clinical course and have increased mortality. Similarly, dyslipidemia is a common complication in patients with COVID-19, indicating that there may be a pathophysiological interaction between lipid metabolism and SARS-CoV-2. The main manifestation is hypocholesterolemia, which is associated with severe illness and unfavorable outcome.

Brain malignancies, given their intricate nature and location, present significant challenges in both diagnosis and treatment. This review critically assesses a range of diagnostic and surgical techniques that have emerged as transformative tools in brain malignancy management. Fast biopsy techniques, prioritizing rapid and minimally invasive tissue sampling, have revolutionized initial diagnostic stages.

Introduction: Peripheral nervous system is early involved in Fabry disease (FD) and preferentially the small nerve fibers, causing the characteristic neuropathic pain crises usually beginning in childhood. Early detection of this likely underdiagnosed disease is an important approach because causal therapies are available.
Methods: We conducted a case-series study to investigate the small nerve fiber involvement in FD and its contribution to the diagnosis of the disease but also to the timely effective therapy administration.

Sleeve gastrectomy (SG) has gained ever-increasing popularity among laparoscopic surgeons involved in bariatric surgery. This single-institution, retrospective cohort study aims to evaluate the prevalence of postoperative staple line leakage (PSLL) after LSG and identify risk factors for its development. We included patient data that underwent LSG at our institution for a span of 17 years-starting in January 2005 and ending in December 2022.

Heart disease is among the primary causes of morbidity and mortality in β-thalassemia major (β-TM). Conventional echocardiography has failed to identify myocardial dysfunction at an early stage among these patients, thus speckle tracking echocardiography (STE) has been lately used. The objectives of this review were to 1) identify all published studies having evaluated myocardial strain among β-TM patients, 2) gather their results, 3) compare their findings and 4) propose recommendations based on these data.

The implementation of guideline recommendations for antibiotics prescription for the management of patients with acute infective conjunctivitis (AIC) in primary care departments remains below par. Our objective was to assess the impact of clinical audit on adherence to evidence-based indications for prescription of antibiotic eye drops in patients diagnosed with AIC, in the setting of a primary care practice in western Greece. We conducted a retrospective audit to evaluate the current prescription practice of antibiotics for the management of AIC.

Background: From a variety of ring types, semirigid ring is more preferred for mitral annuloplasty during mitral valve repair particularly in patients whose native mitral saddle shape annulus is well maintained. During mitral annuloplasty artificial chord implantation with the appropriate neochord length is surgically challenging. We present our experience of using the Memo 3D ReChord, a semirigid ring with additional chordal guiding system for mitral valve repair.

Introduction: Anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibody (ANCA)-associated vasculitides (AAVs) present with a complex phenotype and are associated with high mortality and multi-organ involvement. We sought to define the transcriptional landscape and molecular endotypes of AAVs and compare it to systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE).
Methods: We performed whole blood mRNA sequencing from 30 patients with AAV (granulomatosis with polyangiitis/GPA and microscopic polyangiitis/MPA) combined with functional enrichment and network analysis for aberrant pathways.

Prostate cancer (PCa) is the second most common cancer in men. Diagnosis and risk assessment are widely based on serum Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) and biopsy, which might not represent the exact degree of PCa risk. Towards the discovery of biomarkers for better patient stratification, we performed proteomic analysis of Formalin Fixed Paraffin Embedded (FFPE) prostate tissue specimens using liquid chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS).

The presence of atrial cardiomyopathy in β-thalassemia major (β-TM) patients complicates their clinical condition. The diagnosis is challenging even with cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) imaging. Novel echocardiographic techniques are applied to increase the diagnostic yield.

Purpose: To examine the impact of golimumab, on work productivity, activity limitation, and quality of life (QoL) in patients with axial spondyloarthritis (axSpA) and psoriatic arthritis (PsA).
Methods: This real-world, multicenter, prospective study consecutively enrolled adult consented work-active patients with axSpA or PsA, newly initiated on golimumab as per the approved label. Prior receipt of > 1 prior biologic, or switching from another tumor-necrosis factor inhibitor due to primary non-response or safety reasons was not allowed.

Background: The majority of beta thalassemia major (β-TM) patients suffer from cardiac disease, while a significant proportion of them die suddenly. Twelve-lead and signal-averaged electrocardiography (SAECG) are simple, inexpensive, readily available tools for identifying an unfavorable arrhythmiological substrate by detecting the presence of arrhythmias, conduction abnormalities, and late potentials (LPs) in these patients.
Methods: A total of 47 β-TM patients and 30 healthy controls were submitted to 12-lead and signal-averaged electrocardiography.

Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common post-operative complication and tends to be the most common arrhythmia after cardiac surgery. The etiology and risk factors for post-operative AF are poorly understood, but older age, large left atrium, diffuse coronary artery disease, a history of AF paroxysms and in general, pre-existing cardiac conditions that cause restricting and susceptibility towards inflammation have been consistently linked with post-operative atrial fibrillation (POAF). It has been traditionally thought that post-operative AF is transient, well-tolerated, benign to the patient and self-limiting complication of cardiac surgery that was temporary and easily treated.
