Background: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients are at heightened risk of Coronavirus Disease-19 (COVID-19) complications due to immune dysregulation, chronic inflammation, and treatment with immunosuppressive therapies. This study aims to characterize the clinical and laboratory parameters of RA patients diagnosed with COVID-19, identify predictive risk factors for severe forms of this infection for RA patients, and determine if any RA immunosuppressive therapy is associated with worse COVID-19 outcomes.
Methods: A retrospective observational case-control study included 86 cases (43 diagnosed with RA and 43 cases without any inflammatory or autoimmune disease) that suffered from SARS-CoV-2 in two Romanian hospitals between March 2020 and February 2024.

Dextro-transposition of the great arteries (D-TGA) is a critical congenital heart defect that can impact neurodevelopment due to cerebral perfusion and oxygenation disorders followed by alterations in synaptogenesis, gyrification, sulcation, and the microstructure. Brain injuries can occur both pre-operatively and postoperatively, especially white matter injuries, neuronal loss, and stroke. : In a retrospective study conducted at a tertiary center between 2016 and 2023, we investigated the early effects of Prostaglandin E1 (PGE1) administration and balloon atrial septostomy (BAS) on cerebral blood flow and oxygenation in inborn neonates with D-TGA.

Atherosclerosis is a chronic inflammatory condition marked by endothelial dysfunction, lipid accumulation, inflammatory cell infiltration, and extracellular matrix (ECM) remodeling within arterial walls, leading to plaque formation and potential cardiovascular events. Key players in ECM remodeling and inflammation are matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) and CD147/EMMPRIN, a cell surface glycoprotein expressed on endothelial cells, vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs), and immune cells, that regulates MMP activity. Hydrogen sulfide (H₂S), a gaseous signaling molecule, has emerged as a significant modulator of these processes including oxidative stress mitigation, inflammation reduction, and vascular remodeling.

Neurodegenerative diseases encompass a spectrum of disorders marked by the progressive degeneration of the structure and function of the nervous system. These conditions, including Parkinson's disease (PD), Alzheimer's disease (AD), Huntington's disease (HD), Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), and Multiple sclerosis (MS), often lead to severe cognitive and motor deficits. A critical component of neurodegenerative disease pathologies is the imbalance between pro-oxidant and antioxidant mechanisms, culminating in oxidative stress.

Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) remain the leading cause of mortality among older adults. Early detection is critical as the prognosis for advanced-stage CVD is often poor. Consequently, non-invasive diagnostic tools that can assess hemodynamic function, particularly of the aorta, are essential.

Pain is a subjective concept which is ever-present in the medical field. Health professionals are confronted with a variety of pain types and sources, as well as the challenge of managing a patient with acute or chronic suffering. An even bigger challenge is presented in the pediatric population, which often cannot quantify pain in a numerical scale like adults.

(1) Background: Down syndrome is characterized by physical abnormalities, intellectual disability (ID), and specific patterns of other health issues. Additionally, individuals with DS are known to experience premature aging and early onset of certain age-related medical conditions. These conditions are linked to higher incident disability and reduced survival rates compared to the general population.

Isolated traumatic ureteral injuries are uncommon physiological conditions that can be difficult to manage. This case concerns a 65-year-old man who was referred to the Urology Clinic, suffering left lumbar pain after falling from the same level. A computed tomographic scan revealed the presence of hydronephrosis and a significant perinephric extravasation.

Electrophysiological studies of the larynx expose the mechanisms by which voice production is controlled. Previous studies have revealed certain phenomena during laryngeal oscillations that suggest a complex control mechanism. Starting from the principle of agonist-antagonist muscular pairing, the aim of this study was to gain a deeper insight into the function of the cricothyroid (CT) and thyroarytenoid (TA) muscles, both central to voice production.

Background: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) and end-stage renal disease (ESKD) are significant global health challenges associated with progressive kidney dysfunction and numerous complications, including cardiovascular disease and mortality. This study aims to explore the potential association between plasma klotho levels and various prognostic outcomes in CKD and ESKD, including all-cause mortality, cardiovascular events, metabolic syndrome development and adverse renal events necessitating renal replacement therapies.
Methods: A literature search was conducted through 3 June 2024 using the electronic databases Cochrane Library, Ovid MEDLINE, CINAHL, Web of Science, SCOPUS and PubMed.

Cognitive decline is one of the most important challenges related to the aging process, due to its important impact on individuals. Several studies have reported that physical exercise with a specific intensity and frequency is beneficial for maintaining cognitive health in the ageing population. The present study investigated the impact of general physical exercise on cognitive health in the older population in Romania.

This paper reports results obtained using white light diffraction phase microscopy (wDPM) on captured images of breast and colon tissue samples, marking a contribution to the advancement in biomedical imaging. Unlike conventional brightfield microscopy, wDPM offers the capability to capture intricate details of biological specimens with enhanced clarity and precision. It combines high resolution, enhanced contrast, and quantitative capabilities with non-invasive, label-free imaging.

Contraception, pregnancy and fertility are seldom discussed with women receiving dialysis and the medical staff of dialysis centres. Since the majority of women on dialysis are past childbearing age, these themes are not always given proper consideration and this category of patients may be missing important information. Young women of childbearing age who are on dialysis frequently experience sexual dysfunction and hormonal disorders of the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis.

Muconic acid is a six-carbon dicarboxylic acid with conjugated double bonds that finds extensive use in the food (additive), chemical (production of adipic acid, monomer for functional resins and bio-plastics), and pharmaceutical sectors. The biosynthesis of muconic acid has been the subject of recent industrial and scientific attention. However, because of its low concentration in aqueous solutions and high purity requirement, downstream separation presents a significant problem.

This synthetic organic methodology involves the creation of novel coumarin-based hybrids of series (1-4) with pyrazole ring and (5-8) with oxadiazole moiety. The targeted compounds were tested for In vitro Antimicrobial efficacy against Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Candida albicans pathogenic microbes using disc diffusion and broth microdilution with ciprofloxacin and fluconazole as reference standards. Density functional theory (DFT) studies were used to study atomic structure and reactivity, including absolute electronegativity (χ), electrophilicity (ω), electron acceptor (ω+), donor capabilities (ω-), electron affinity (EA), energy gap (ΔE), global hardness (η), global softness (S), and ionisation potential (IP) and FMOs, NBOs, MEP, and Mulliken Charge analysis.
