  • COVID-19 made it harder for doctors to perform surgeries, but some new ways of working could be helpful in the future.
  • A survey of Italian surgeons showed that they started using online consultations and education much more after the pandemic hit.
  • Though there were fewer surgeries, the pandemic encouraged new technologies like telemedicine, which many doctors found useful and want to keep using.

The melanocortin system is a complex set of molecular mediators and receptors involved in many physiological and homeostatic processes. These include the regulation of melanogenesis, steroidogenesis, neuromodulation and the modulation of inflammatory processes. In the latter context, the system has assumed importance in conditions of chronic digestive inflammation, such as inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), in which numerous experiences have been accumulated in mouse models of colitis.

is the most common nosocomial coagulase-negative staphylococci infection in preterm infants. Clinical signs of infection are often unspecific and novel markers to complement diagnosis are needed. We investigated proteomic alterations in mouse brain after infection and in preterm infant blood.

Article Synopsis
  • Cervical cancer is the fourth most common cancer among women, and its prevention relies on vaccination and screening methods that require specialized equipment and multiple professionals.
  • A central laboratory processes cervical samples from over 51 clinics, performing automated HPV testing and preparing liquid-based cytology slides for digital examination using whole-slide images (WSIs).
  • The study found that while subjective confidence in diagnosing with WSIs was lower and perceived difficulty was higher, the diagnostic accuracy between conventional and digital methods remained similar, indicating moderate interobserver agreement regardless of the examination method used.

, berberine, and quercetin are effective in experimental colitis. It is unknown whether they can ameliorate inflammatory bowel diseases in humans. This study aimed to evaluate the anti-inflammatory potential of a nutraceutical compound of HBQ-Complex (, berberine, and quercetin), biotin, and niacin in inflammatory bowel disease patients.

Article Synopsis
  • The Sydney system was developed to improve standardization and reproducibility in lymph node cytopathology, with previous studies focusing on its risk of malignancy but not on how consistently different pathologists can interpret it.
  • A study involving 15 cytopathologists from 12 institutions globally evaluated 85 cases using digital whole-slide images, resulting in over 1200 diagnoses.
  • The findings indicated nearly perfect agreement with a ground truth for most diagnoses, but varying levels of concordance across categories, with the inadequate and malignant categories showing the most agreement, while suspicious and atypical categories had very slight agreement.

Objective: The digital revolution in pathology represents an invaluable resource fto optimise costs, reduce the risk of error and improve patient care, even though it is still adopted in a minority of laboratories. Barriers include concerns about initial costs, lack of confidence in using whole slide images for primary diagnosis, and lack of guidance on transition. To address these challenges and develop a programme to facilitate the introduction of digital pathology (DP) in Italian pathology departments, a panel discussion was set up to identify the key points to be considered.

Purpose: This interim report of the GARNET phase I trial presents efficacy and safety of dostarlimab in patients with advanced or recurrent endometrial cancer (EC), with an analysis of tumor biomarkers as prognostic indicators.

Patients And Methods: A total of 153 patients with mismatch repair deficient (dMMR)/microsatellite instability-high (MSI-H) and 161 patients with mismatch repair proficient (MMRp)/microsatellite stable (MSS) EC were enrolled and dosed. Patients received 500 mg dostarlimab every 3 weeks for four cycles, then 1,000 mg every 6 weeks until progression.

Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) is a cardiac muscle disorder characterized by generally asymmetric abnormal hypertrophy of the left ventricle without abnormal loading conditions (such as hypertension or valvular heart disease) accounting for the left ventricular wall thickness or mass. The incidence of sudden cardiac death (SCD) in HCM patients is about 1% yearly in adults, but it is far higher in adolescence. HCM is the most frequent cause of death in athletes in the Unites States of America.

Cardiac Magnetic Resonance for Prophylactic Implantable-Cardioverter Defibrillator Therapy in Ischemic Cardiomyopathy: The DERIVATE-ICM International Registry.

JACC Cardiovasc Imaging

November 2023

Cardiovascular Department, CMR Center, University Hospital Lausanne, CHUV, Lausanne, Switzerland; Faculty of Medicine and Biology, University of Lausanne, UniL, Lausanne, Switzerland.

Background: Implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) therapy is the most effective prophylactic strategy against sudden cardiac death (SCD) in patients with ischemic cardiomyopathy (ICM) and left ventricle ejection fraction (LVEF) ≤35% as detected by transthoracic echocardiograpgy (TTE). This approach has been recently questioned because of the low rate of ICD interventions in patients who received implantation and the not-negligible percentage of patients who experienced SCD despite not fulfilling criteria for implantation.

Objectives: The DERIVATE-ICM registry (CarDiac MagnEtic Resonance for Primary Prevention Implantable CardioVerter DebrillAtor ThErapy; NCT03352648) is an international, multicenter, and multivendor study to assess the net reclassification improvement (NRI) for the indication of ICD implantation by the use of cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) as compared to TTE in patients with ICM.

In colorectal cancer (CRC), artificial intelligence (AI) can alleviate the laborious task of characterization and reporting on resected biopsies, including polyps, the numbers of which are increasing as a result of CRC population screening programs ongoing in many countries all around the globe. Here, we present an approach to address two major challenges in the automated assessment of CRC histopathology whole-slide images. We present an AI-based method to segment multiple ([Formula: see text]) tissue compartments in the H &E-stained whole-slide image, which provides a different, more perceptible picture of tissue morphology and composition.

Article Synopsis
  • A study was conducted to compare the effectiveness of heated tobacco products (HTPs) and electronic cigarettes (ECs) in helping smokers who do not want to quit smoking switch from traditional cigarettes.
  • The trial lasted 12 weeks and assessed quit rates, reduction in cigarette consumption, and user satisfaction among participants, with results indicating similar rates of abstinence and reduced smoking for both products.
  • While both HTPs and ECs were found to provide a moderately pleasant user experience, the most common side effects were cough and reduced physical fitness, highlighting some health concerns associated with their use.

Background Scar burden with late gadolinium enhancement (LGE) cardiac MRI (CMR) predicts arrhythmic events in patients with postinfarction in single-center studies. However, LGE analysis requires experienced human observers, is time consuming, and introduces variability. Purpose To test whether postinfarct scar with LGE CMR can be quantified fully automatically by machines and to compare the ability of LGE CMR scar analyzed by humans and machines to predict arrhythmic events.

Burkitt-like lymphoma with 11q aberration is a rare condition that poses a diagnostic challenge due to similarities with Burkitt's lymphoma. Due to the rarity of cases, no specific guidelines exist for therapy, and it is treated the same way as Burkitt's lymphoma. We present such a case with initial orbital involvement, an unusual manifestation.
