Early detection of pleuro-pulmonary tuberculosis by bedside lung ultrasound: A case report and review of literature.

We present a case in which lung ultrasound (LUS) was relevant to reach an early diagnosis of lung tuberculosis and to manage the patient in the right setting. Moreover, ultrasound allowed to detect and treat massive pleural effusion through an ultrasound-guided thoracentesis.

Carbamazepine, phenytoin, and oral anticoagulants: Drug-drug interaction and clinical events in a retrospective cohort.

Background: Carbamazepine and phenytoin are potent inducers of enzymes that metabolize oral anticoagulants.

Objectives: To determine the clinical impact of drug-drug interactions between these anticonvulsants and oral anticoagulants, and whether they affect the treatment with direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs) or vitamin K antagonists (VKAs).

Material And Methods: Data on patients cotreated with carbamazepine or phenytoin and an oral anticoagulant were retrospectively retrieved from medical records from 2011 to 2020.

Synthesis of green fluorescent carbon dots from carbon nano-onions and graphene oxide.

In recent years, carbon dots (CDs) have triggered considerable interest due to their intriguing tunable photoluminescence properties. In this work, we report the synthesis of green-emitting CDs from two different carbon sources, namely carbon nano-onions and graphene oxide. We also investigate the effects of the two starting materials on the physico-chemical properties of the as-synthesised CDs.

Serum Activity Against G Protein-Coupled Receptors and Severity of Orthostatic Symptoms in Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome.

Background Postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS) is characterized by excessive heart rate increase on standing and orthostatic intolerance. Previous data indicate autoimmune involvement. We studied serum activity against G protein-coupled receptors in relation to symptoms in patients with POTS and controls using a commercial cell-based assay.

Impact of Cardiovascular Neurohormones on Onset of Vasovagal Syncope Induced by Head-up Tilt.

Background Vasovagal reflex is the most common form of syncope, but the pathophysiological mechanisms that initiate the reflex are not well understood. We aimed to study supine and early orthostatic levels of the neurohormones involved in control of circulatory homeostasis in relation to the onset of tilt-induced vasovagal syncope (VVS). Methods and Results A total of 827 patients who were investigated for unexplained syncope with head-up tilt test (HUT) and optional nitroglycerin provocation (Italian protocol) had blood samples collected while supine and after 3-minutes of HUT.

Cardiac resynchronization therapy with multipoint pacing in a patient with cancer therapeutics-related cardiac dysfunction.

Cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) with multipoint pacing and quadripolar lead implantation showed improvement in systolic function, reduction in left ventricular volumes, and improved functional capacity in a patient with cancer therapeutics-related cardiac dysfunction; this therapy could be a valid option in those cases where a suboptimal CRT response is expected.

A new case of "de novo" BRCA1 mutation in a patient with early-onset breast cancer.

Most of the de novo BRCA1/2 mutations have been identified in patients with early-onset breast cancer and without family history of the disease. The identification of these alterations could play a prominent role in the prevention and treatment strategies and may influence clinical management of patients.

A comparison of the diagnostic performance of the ST/HR hysteresis with cardiopulmonary stress testing parameters in detecting exercise-induced myocardial ischemia.

Background: Because ST segment depression has limited diagnostic performance at exercise electrocardiography (ECG), ST segment depression/heart rate (ST/HR) hysteresis and cardiopulmonary exercise test (CPET)-derived parameters have been proposed as alternatives to diagnose exercise-induced myocardial ischemia.
