Quality of life in sinonasal tumors: an up-to-date review.

Curr Opin Otolaryngol Head Neck Surg

February 2022

University of Nicosia Medical School, Director of Endoscopic Sinus and Skull Base Surgery Department, Hygeia Hospital, Athens, Greece.

Purpose Of Review: To assess the impact of benign and malignant sinonasal tumors and their management on patients' Quality of Life (QOL) as measured by Patient Reported Outcome Measures (PROMS).

Recent Findings: Although there is a growing consensus that endoscopic surgical management in carefully selected patients with sinonasal tumors is at least as (and probably more) effective than open resection, it is not clear to what extent this translates to better QOL outcomes. Earlier studies reported better outcomes in the emotional and physical function domains after endoscopic resection, and it seems that postsurgical morbidity is less in endoscopic compared to open approaches.

Background: Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is an inflammatory lung disease characterized by airflow limitation that is not completely reversible. The fixed-dose combination of salmeterol and fluticasone propionate (SFC) has been approved as a treatment for COPD patients with a history of recurrent exacerbations and significant symptoms despite regular bronchodilator therapy. In the present study, we evaluated the change in FEV, mMRC dyspnea score and satisfaction in COPD patients with at least one comorbidity versus those without comorbidities treated with a fixed-dose SFC via the Elpenhaler device for 12 months.

Intratumoral heterogeneity in lung cancer is essential for evasion of immune surveillance by tumor cells and establishment of immunosuppression. Gathering data reveal that circular RNAs (circRNAs), play a role in the pathogenesis and progression of lung cancer. Particularly Kras-driven circRNA signaling triggers infiltration of myeloid-associated tumor macrophages in lung tumor microenvironment thus establishing immune deregulation, and immunosuppression but the exact pathogenic mechanism is still unknown.

  • Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis (IPF) is a chronic lung disease with an unpredictable progression, and this study aimed to assess the prognostic value of complete blood count parameters in patients diagnosed with IPF.
  • The research involved analyzing data from 489 treatment-naïve IPF patients across two cohorts, focusing on monocyte count and red cell distribution width (RDW) to categorize them into high and low groups.
  • Results showed that higher monocyte counts and RDW were linked to significantly poorer lung function and higher mortality rates, with similar findings confirmed in a validation cohort.
