Clinical Outcome of Kidney Transplant Recipients with C1q-Binding De Novo Donor Specific Antibodies: A Single-Center Experience.

Complement activation by HLA antibodies is a key component of immune-mediated graft injury. We examined the clinical outcomes of kidney transplant recipients with complement-fixing de novo donor-specific antibodies (dnDSA) who were followed in our center. The C1q-binding ability was retrospectively assessed in 69 patients with dnDSA and mean fluorescence intensity (MFI) values > 2000 out of the 1325 kidney transplant recipients who were screened for DSA between 2015 and 2019.

Quantum Molecular Resonance Electrical Stimulation as a Beneficial and Safe Treatment for Multifactorial Dry Eye Disease.

Introduction: To assess the clinical benefits obtained with transcutaneous low-power, high-frequency quantum molecular resonance (QMR) electrotherapy in a group of multifactorial dry eye patients.

Methods: Fifty-one patients (total of 102 eyes) with dry eye symptoms were enrolled in the study. Included clinical conditions were meibomian gland dysfunction, glaucoma, cataract surgery within the past six months, and autoimmune disease-related superficial punctuate keratitis.

COVID-19 Outcomes and Diabetes Mellitus: A Comprehensive Multicenter Prospective Cohort Study.

The link between type 2 diabetes (T2D) and the severe outcomes of COVID-19 has raised concerns about the optimal management of patients with T2D. This study aimed to investigate the clinical characteristics and outcomes of T2D patients hospitalized with COVID-19 and explore the potential associations between chronic T2D treatments and adverse outcomes. This was a multicenter prospective cohort study of T2D patients hospitalized with COVID-19 in Greece during the third wave of the pandemic (February-June 2021).

Effect of the Mediterranean Diet on Progression of Dry Form of Age-related Macular Degeneration.

Background/aim: The aim of this study was to investigate the possible effect of the Mediterranean diet (Med Diet) on the progression of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) in patients with early or intermediate stages of dry AMD.

Patients And Methods: The present study included 164 patients with early or intermediate dry AMD. Data collected included demographics, anthropometric data, ophthalmic and medical history.

Effect of silicone oil on retinal microcirculation after vitrectomy for rhegmatogenous retinal detachment evaluated by OCT angiography: a literature review.

Silicone oil (SO) has been widely used as intravitreal tamponade agent for rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD) and has been occasionally associated with incomplete retinal structural and functional recovery. The use of Optical Coherence Tomography Angiography (OCT-A) has recently attracted significant attention for detailed analysis of retinal capillary plexus and blood flow changes as predicting factors for postoperative outcomes. Late-onset Relapse of Aqueous Misdirection after Pars Plana Vitrectomy: Case Report and Literature Review.

Aim: We report on an 88-year-old female patient who presented with a relapse in aqueous misdirection 15 years after being treated with pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) with hyaloidotomy-zonulectomy-iridotomy (HZI) for the same cause.

Case Description: A 73-year-old pseudophakic woman with a history of pseudoexfoliation underwent a trabeculectomy in the left eye in our institution because of uncontrolled intraocular pressure. Days after trabeculectomy, the patient developed aqueous misdirection and was treated with PPV combined with HZI.

Three Column Fixation Through a Single Incision in Distal Radius Fractures.

 The purpose of this study was to evaluate the clinical and functional results of 67 patients with distal radius fracture (DRF), treated with a modified surgical technique that allows three-column fixation through the same palmar approach.  Between 2014 and 2019, we treated 67 patients using a particular surgical technique. Efficacy, Safety and Feasibility of Superior Vena Cava Isolation in Patients Undergoing Atrial Fibrillation Catheter Ablation: An Up-to-Date Review.

Pulmonary vein isolation (PVI) is the cornerstone in atrial fibrillation (AF) ablation; yet, the role of arrhythmogenic superior vena cava (SVC) is increasingly recognized and different ablation strategies have been employed in this context. SVC can act as a trigger or perpetuator of AF, and its significance might be more pronounced in patients undergoing repeated ablation. Several cohorts have examined efficacy, safety and feasibility of SVC isolation (SVCI) among AF patients.

Cardiorenal multimorbidity in hospitalized cardiology patients: The Hellenic Cardiorenal Morbidity Snapshot (HECMOS) study.

Purpose: Cardiovascular disease is commonly accompanied by renal dysfunction. Multimorbidity in hospitalized patients impacts unfavorably on prognosis and hospital stay. We aimed to illustrate the contemporary burden of cardiorenal morbidity across inpatient cardiology care in Greece.

Correlation Between Coronary and Retinal Microangiopathy in Patients With STEMI.

Purpose: To investigate the morphological and functional correlation between microvascular retinal changes in optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) and the microvascular coronary circulation in patients with ST elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) coronary heart disease (CHD).

Methods: A total of 330 eyes from 165 participants (88 cases and 77 controls) were enrolled and imaged. Superficial capillary plexus (SCP) and deep capillary plexus (DCP) vascular density was measured in the central (1 mm) and perifoveal (1-3 mm) areas and in the superficial foveal avascular zone (FAZ) and choriocapillaris (3 mm).

A closed-loop audit of the prescription practice of topical antibiotics for acute infective conjunctivitis.

The implementation of guideline recommendations for antibiotics prescription for the management of patients with acute infective conjunctivitis (AIC) in primary care departments remains below par. Our objective was to assess the impact of clinical audit on adherence to evidence-based indications for prescription of antibiotic eye drops in patients diagnosed with AIC, in the setting of a primary care practice in western Greece. We conducted a retrospective audit to evaluate the current prescription practice of antibiotics for the management of AIC.

Background: Left atrium changes are implicated in atrial fibrillation (AF) substrate and are predictive of AF outcomes. Left atrial appendage (LAA) is an integral component of left atrial structure and could be affected by atrial cardiomyopathy. We aimed to elucidate the association between LAA indices and late arrhythmia recurrence after atrial fibrillation catheter ablation (AFCA).

A Rare Case of a Giant Sialolith Within Wharton's Duct.

Sialolithiasis is a common disease characterized by the formation of calculi within the salivary glands or their ducts. Although many cases of large stones located within the submandibular gland have previously been reported, the presence of a giant stone within Wharton's duct is extremely rare. We report the case of a patient who presented with an unusually large stone measuring about 6 cm in the greatest dimension located within Wharton's duct and causing local swelling and pain.
