Article Synopsis
  • There is insufficient evidence supporting the effectiveness of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections for treating female sexual dysfunction (FSD) and female stress urinary incontinence (SUI), as indicated by a systematic review.
  • The review included clinical studies that evaluated PRP's efficacy on 327 women and found significant improvements in sexual function and urinary symptoms, although a comparison with midurethral sling procedures showed better outcomes for the sling.
  • The study highlights the risk of bias, with randomized-controlled trials showing high risk and observational studies having moderate risk, ultimately suggesting specific protocols for PRP injection treatments.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine whether specific genetic polymorphisms affect the response to intravitreal anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (anti-VEGF) treatment in patients with macular oedema secondary to retinal vein occlusion (RVO).

Methods: Participants in this prospective study were 50 patients with macular oedema secondary to RVO, who were treated with intravitreal ranibizumab or aflibercept, and were followed-up for 12 months after initiation of treatment. Five single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) from three different genes (, , ) were examined as potential predictors for treatment response to intravitreal anti-VEGF agents.

Background: Current guidelines recommend a rhythm control strategy in patients with symptomatic atrial fibrillation (AF) while catheter ablation has been shown to be a safer and more efficacious approach than antiarrhythmic medications.

Methods: HECMOS was a nationwide snapshot survey of cardiorenal morbidity in hospitalized cardiology patients. In this sub-study, we included 276 cases who had a history of AF, particularly on the rhythm strategy, and catheter ablation procedures had been performed before the index admission.

Purpose: Degenerative meniscus tears can cause discomfort in some patients, and when medical treatments fail to provide relief, arthroscopy may be considered before resorting to knee prosthesis. However, the benefits of arthroscopy over nonsurgical treatments in patients over 60 years old are limited, and the evidence regarding its overall efficiency and drawbacks remains scarce. Furthermore, there has been no investigation into whether those patients treated with partial meniscectomy, undergo the knee operation at an earlier stage of osteoarthritis.

Pathogenesis and prognosis of intrarenal reflux.

Folia Med Cracov

July 2023

First Department of Pediatric Surgery, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, General Hospital "G. Gennimatas", Thessaloniki, Greece.

Scar development in the children's renal cortex with vesicoureteral reflux (VUR) is one of the most important parameters of prognosis. It can develop regardless of the chosen treatment, even after the regression of VUR. The shape of the renal papillae, the ascending urinary tract infection, the greater than third-degree VUR, and finally the increased intra-calyceal pressure, induce the formation of renal scarring in the renal parenchyma.

Following its therapeutic effect in hematological metastasis, chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T cell therapy has gained a great deal of attention during the last years. However, the effectiveness of this treatment has been hampered by a number of challenges, including significant toxicities, difficult access to tumor locations, inadequate therapeutic persistence, and manufacturing problems. Developing novel techniques to produce effective CARs, administer them, and monitor their anti-tumor activity in CAR-T cell treatment is undoubtedly necessary.

Article Synopsis
  • Patients with diabetes mellitus (DM), particularly type II DM (T2DM), are at a higher risk for developing heart failure (HF), yet there is limited data on how prevalent different stages of HF are among this group in Greece.
  • This study aims to investigate the occurrence and progression of HF stages in T2DM patients diagnosed in the last decade (with no prior HF history) and to identify factors that may lead to symptomatic HF in these patients.
  • Using a multi-center, prospective cohort design involving 300 patients across 11 specialized cardiology centers, the study will track various health data over 24 months to determine the rates of symptomatic HF and other HF stages in this population.

Introduction Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) comprises a heterogeneous group of tumors with a single trait in common: an evident aggressive nature with higher rates of relapse and lower overall survival in the metastatic context when compared to other subtypes of breast cancer. To date, not a single targeted therapy has been approved for the treatment of TNBC, and cytotoxic chemotherapy remains the standard treatment. In the present experimental study, we examine the effects of the chemotherapeutic docetaxel and the bcr/abl kinase inhibitor dasatinib on TNBC cell lines (in vitro) and on TNBC tumor xenograft mouse models (in vivo).
