Several studies have investigated the effect of botulinum toxin A (BoNT-A) for managing chronic musculoskeletal pain, bringing contrasting results to the forefront. Thus far, however, there has been no synthesis of evidence on the effect of BoNT-A as an adjunctive treatment within a multimodal approach. Hence, Medline via PubMed, EMBASE, and the Cochrane Library-CENTRAL were searched until November 2020 for randomised controlled trials (RCTs) that investigated the use of BoNT-A as an adjunctive therapy for chronic musculoskeletal pain.

Low-grade adenosquamous carcinoma is a less frequent variant of metaplastic breast carcinoma, incidentally detected during screening and has an age distribution similar to other breast carcinomas. It shares characteristics with both benign and malignant carcinomas: its mammographic and sonographic features are therefore nonspecific. Breast conserving surgery with adjuvant radiation therapy is currently the preferred therapeutic approach.

Detection of 1,3-β-d-glucan (BDG) in serum has been evaluated for its inclusion as a mycological criterion of invasive fungal infections (IFI) according to EORTC and Mycoses Study Group (MSG) definitions. BDG testing may be useful for the diagnosis of both invasive aspergillosis and invasive candidiasis, when interpreted in conjunction with other clinical/radiological signs and microbiological markers of IFI. However, its performance and utility vary according to patient population (hematologic cancer patients, solid-organ transplant recipients, intensive care unit patients) and pretest likelihood of IFI.

CDT reference values for monitoring chronic alcohol abuse in pregnancy.

Clin Chim Acta

August 2020

Dept. of Diagnostic and Public Health, Unit of Forensic Medicine, University of Verona, Verona, Italy; Institute of Translational Medicine and Biotechnology, Sechenov First Moscow State Medical University, Moscow, Russia.

Introduction And Aim: Carbohydrate Deficient Transferrin (CDT) is one of the most used biomarkers for monitoring alcohol use in pregnancy. However, its effective application in this context is hampered by the demonstrated physiological progressive increase during pregnancy (even in abstinent women) of CDT values, which in the third trimester can reach values close or exceeding the cut-offs usually adopted in clinical and forensic diagnostics. The present work was aimed at the re-assessment of CDT reference values in pregnancy.

Background: Invasive fungal diseases (IFDs) remain important causes of morbidity and mortality. The consensus definitions of the Infectious Diseases Group of the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer and the Mycoses Study Group have been of immense value to researchers who conduct clinical trials of antifungals, assess diagnostic tests, and undertake epidemiologic studies. However, their utility has not extended beyond patients with cancer or recipients of stem cell or solid organ transplants.

Background: The usual history of chronic heart failure (HF) is characterized by frequent episodes of acute decompensation (ADHF), needing urgent management in the emergency department (ED). Since the diagnostic accuracy of routine laboratory tests remains quite limited for predicting short-term mortality in ADHF, this retrospective study investigated the potential significance of combining red blood cell distribution width (RDW) with other conventional tests for prognosticating ADHF upon ED admission.

Methods: We conducted a retrospective study including visits for episodes of ADHF recorded in the ED of the Uni versity Hospital of Verona throughout a 4-year period.

Nocardia infection over 5 years (2011-2015) in an Italian tertiary care hospital.

New Microbiol

April 2018

Infectious Diseases Section, Diagnostic and Public Health Department, University of Verona, Policlinico "G. B. Rossi", Verona, Italy.

This study was conducted reviewing clinical records of 14 patients affected by nocardiosis over 5 years in a tertiary care hospital. Nocardia abscessus was responsible for one third of infections, deviating significantly from the results reported by other epidemiological investigations and highlighting the key role of molecular identification tests. Indeed, a precise identification of species is crucial for the determination of antibiotic sensitivity patterns and, consequently, for the choice of antibiotic treatment.

Non-invasive Cerebellar Stimulation in Cerebellar Disorders.

CNS Neurol Disord Drug Targets

July 2019

"Aldo Ravelli" Center for Neurotechnology and Experimental Brain Therapeutics, Department of Health Sciences, University of Milan Medical School, Milan, Italy.

Background & Objective: Non-invasive brain stimulation (NIBS) might be a valuable therapeutic approach for neurological diseases by modifying the cortical activity in the human brain and promoting neural plasticity. Currently, researchers are exploring the use of NIBS on the cerebellum to promote functional neural changes in cerebellar disorders. In the presence of cerebellar dysfunction, several movement disorders, such as kinetic tremor, ataxia of gait, limb dysmetria and oculomotor deficits, become progressively more disabling in daily life, and no pharmacological treatments currently exist.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examined whether changes in red blood cell distribution width (RDW) during hospital stays could predict mortality in patients with acutely decompensated heart failure (ADHF).
  • It involved 588 patients, measuring RDW at admission and again after 48 and 96 hours, finding that increases in RDW after 96 hours were linked to higher mortality rates at 30 and 60 days.
  • The results suggest that patients showing increased RDW may require more intensive management during their hospitalization for better outcomes.
