Cerebellar mutism syndrome (CMS), also known as posterior fossa syndrome, is an entity that entails a constellation of signs and symptoms which are recorded in a limited number of pediatric patients who have been operated on mainly for tumors involving the posterior cranial fossa, and more precisely, the region of the vermis. Medulloblastoma seems to constitute the most commonly recognized pathological substrate, associated with this entity. The most prevalent constituents of this syndrome are noted to be a, often transient, although protracted, language impairment, emotional lability, along with cerebellar and brainstem dysfunction.

Objectives: Elevated concentrations of soluble urokinase plasminogen activator receptor (suPAR) predict progression to severe respiratory failure (SRF) or death among patients with COVID-19 pneumonia and guide early anakinra treatment. As suPAR testing may not be routinely available in every health-care setting, alternative biomarkers are needed. We investigated the performance of C-reactive protein (CRP), interferon gamma-induced protein-10 (IP-10) and TNF-related apoptosis-inducing ligand (TRAIL) for predicting SRF or death in COVID-19.

Current pre-transplantation routine matching involves serum anti-HLA antibodies quantification but cannot always preclude unfavorable graft outcomes. Epitope-based matching is proposed as a more precise approach, but to date no epitope-matching algorithm provides a satisfactory predictive tool for transplantation outcomes. In this study, anti-HLA-II loci responses from 1748 patients were analyzed with unsupervised machine learning algorithms, namely principal component analysis (PCA) and antigenic distances, projected as dendrograms.

Astronauts exhibit several pathophysiological changes due to a variety of stressors related to the space environment, including microgravity, space radiation, isolation, and confinement. Space motion sickness, bone and muscle mass loss, cardiovascular deconditioning and neuro-ocular syndrome are some of the spaceflight-induced effects on human health. Optimal nutrition is of the utmost importance, and-in combination with other measures, such as physical activity and pharmacological treatment-has a key role in mitigating many of the above conditions, including bone and muscle mass loss.

Ligation of the left innominate vein (LIV) expands the surgeon's surgical field for ascending aorta and aortic arch procedures. Although it is considered a safe technique by most surgeons in that it is associated with only minor drawbacks, conflicting views exist regarding this method. We herein describe a 70-year-old woman who underwent ascending aorta replacement due to an aneurysm with subsequent cerebral dysfunction caused by extended brain edema, possibly related to LIV ligation, leading to her death.

Article Synopsis
  • Cardiac perforation is a rare but serious complication that can occur during the implantation of transvenous pacemakers, most commonly at the apex of the heart.
  • A case was reported where a patient's ventricular lead perforated the ventricular septum six days post-pacemaker implantation, resulting in the lead exiting the left ventricle and causing the need for cardiac surgery.
  • This case highlights that even with proper lead placement in the right ventricle, perforation can still happen, illustrating the risks associated with pacemaker procedures.

  • Parotid swelling (PSW) is a sign that can predict a type of cancer called non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) in people with a condition called primary Sjögren's Syndrome (pSS).
  • * A study looked at patients with pSS and compared those who developed NHL and those who didn't, focusing on how long they had PSW.
  • * The results showed that longer PSW increases the risk of NHL and that NHL mostly shows up in the parotid glands, suggesting that these glands play a big role in the disease.

Although mitral valve prolapse (MVP) is usually considered a benign clinical condition, it has been linked with ventricular arrhythmias and sudden cardiac death in patients with a certain "arrhythmic" phenotype, raising awareness and mandating a specific risk stratification protocol. Mitral annular disjunction (MAD) is considered a "red flag" in malignant MVP syndrome along with bileaflet myxomatous prolapse, female gender, negative or biphasic T waves in the inferior leads, fibrosis in the papillary muscles or inferobasal wall detected by cardiac magnetic resonance imaging and complex arrhythmias of right bundle branch morphology. MAD seems to play a critical role in the chain of morphofunctional abnormalities which lead to increased mechanical stretch and subsequent fibrosis mainly in the papillary muscles, forming the vulnerable anatomic substrate prone to arrhythmogenesis, and associated with long-term severe ventricular arrhythmias.
