High-dose chemotherapy (HDT) followed by autologous hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (ASCT) is widely used in patients with malignant lymphomas. In Europe over 8,000 ASCTs for lymphoma were performed out of a total of 40,000 transplants according to the European Bone Marrow Transplant (EBMT) activity survey in 2017. ASCT is considered the standard treatment for eligible patients failing to achieve remission after first line chemotherapy or patients with relapsed or refractory lymphomas, including classical Hodkin's lymphoma, diffuse large B-cell lymphoma, mantle cell lymphoma, and follicular lymphoma, as well as consolidation therapy in first remission in mantle cell lymphoma.

Hodgkin lymphoma is a highly curable malignant hemopathy, using chemotherapy, radiotherapy, target therapies and hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. Current research in this field focuses on identifying prognostic factors associated with the pathogenic characteristics of the tumoral process, enabling the therapy to be adjusted to each patient's degree of risk. The identification of biomarkers associated with the tumoral process is extremely important because these molecules can be targets for new biological therapies.

Gallbladder inflammation is most often determined by the presence of gallstones. Acalculous cholecystitis usually occurs in patients with multiple comorbidities or with an immunosuppressed status, and therefore its evolution is faster and more severe compared to acute calculous cholecystitis. The presence of a fish bone into the peritoneal cavity, through a gastrointestinal fistula is not very rare, but acute cholecystitis caused by a fish bone is unexpected.

Squamous cell carcinoma is the most common type of neoplasia which affects the mucosa of the upper aero-digestive tract. Nasopharyngeal carcinoma is a unique disease with clinical behavior, epidemiology, and histopathology that is different from that of squamous cell carcinomas of the head and neck. For malignant tumors such as SCC, rapid growth may occur even though there are no previous clinical signs.

Even if considered a cumulative and not a proliferative CD5+ B-cell neoplasm, chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) has a proliferation rate higher than that recognized earlier, especially in the lymphoid tissues. Some patients with CLL develop a clinical syndrome entitled Richter syndrome (RS). Understanding CLL genetics and epigenetics may help to elucidate the molecular basics of the clinical heterogeneity of this type of malignancy.

Alterations in the bone marrow niche induced by abnormal production of cytokines and other soluble factors have been associated with disease progression in classical BCR-ABL1 negative myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPN). Variations in circulating proteins might reflect local disease processes and plasma proteome profiling could serve to identify possible diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers. We employed a human cytokine array to screen for 105 distinct analytes in pooled plasma samples obtained from untreated young MPN patients (<35 years) with different clinical phenotypes and driver mutations, as well as from healthy individuals.

Psoriasis is a prevalent chronic inflammatory disease with worldwide distribution affecting approximately 2% of the Caucasian population. There have been many population- and family-based studies that agree on the strong genetic component of this disease. Several studies have investigated the relationship between cytokine gene polymorphisms, psoriasis, and the occurrence of comorbidities but their data are conflicting.

Data from observational and post-hoc analyses suggest that heart failure (HF) itself may be associated with higher risk of thromboembolic events compared to populations without HF. Although oral anticoagulants (OACs) might be a therapeutic option in individual cases, anticoagulation therapy in HF patients in sinus rhythm is not generally recommended, as the implementation of OACs in clinical practice in this HF population is not supported by large randomized clinical trials to date. Indeed, the available data suggest that the risk of major bleeding overshadows the potential anti-thromboembolic benefit of OACs in HF patients in sinus rhythm with no net beneficial effect on mortality rates.

Retinal vessels are the only blood vessels that can be viewed directly, in vivo, repetitively and non-invasively. Retinal vessel caliber is influenced by physiological (age, sex, race, blood pressure, blood glucose, body mass index) and pathological (atherosclerosis, dyslipidemia, smoking) determinants. There are studies on large population groups that demonstrate the associations between retinal vasculature and subclinical or clinical changes in systemic diseases (hypertension, diabetes, stroke, renal or cardiac diseases).

Antineoplastic targeted therapies, such as EGFR inhibitors, tyrosine kinase inhibitors and BRAF inhibitors, frequently lead to systemic and cutaneous side effects, significantly affecting patient's quality of life. Patients with new targeted therapies have an increased risk of developing skin reactions. The new molecular target therapies developed in the last decades can induce severe skin reactions, which may require dose reduction or discontinuation of treatment and consequently, a decrease in patient's quality of life.

Non‑melanoma skin cancer (NMSC) is the most common form of cancer worldwide, comprising 95% of all cutaneous malignancies and approximately 40% of all cancers. In spite of intensive efforts aimed towards awareness campaigns and sun‑protective measures, epidemiological data indicate an increase in the incidence of NMSC. This category of skin cancers has many common environmental triggers.

Cardiovascular complications induced by adjuvant cancer therapies may become symptomatic after many years, being responsible for increased morbidity and mortality in long-term survivors. We report a case of a 54-year old female admitted for severe heart failure induced by myocardial and valvular damage after postoperative adjuvant therapy for left breast cancer 6 years ago. Her recent history revealed nonST elevation myocardial infarction in the absence of significant cardiovascular risk factors.

Bone determinations are usually the first sign of disseminated cancers, whether is a hematological malignancy or other type of neoplasia. The aim of this paper is the possibility of differentiating the bone lesions from hematological malignancies by other malignancies that give bone metastases for the purpose to guide the clinician concerning causality of bone lesions. The research involved a retrospective study, which included 309 cases that were investigated by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) at a segment of the spine, between 2010 and 2014, from which 137 were diagnosed with a form of hematological neoplasia, and the remaining had another form of cancer.

Hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) is a very severe and rare syndrome of pathologic immune activation characterized by cytopenia and clinical signs and symptoms of extreme inflammation. HLH is usually fatal without treatment so that accurate and timely diagnosis is very important. The syndrome occurs as a familial disorder (familial HLH - FLH) or as an acquired condition (secondary - sHLH) in association with a variety of pathologic states: infections, rheumatologic, malignant or metabolic diseases.

Type 2 diabetes mellitus represents a major public health challenge, due to the continuously growing prevalence and the complexity of the diabetic complications. Hyperglycemia seems to be the main mechanism for the disease progression. During erythrocyte's long life span, erythrocyte membranes are affected by the chronic exposure to glucose, which triggers several biochemical modifications that lead to both structural and functional disruption, which are further involved in the physiopathology of diabetes and its complications.

The 2016 WHO-CMP classification proposal defines a broad spectrum of JAK2 V617F mutated MPN phenotypes: normocellular ET, hypercellular ET due to increased erythropoiesis (prodromal PV), hypercellular ET with megakaryocytic-granulocytic myeloproliferation and splenomegaly (EMGM or masked PV), erythrocythemic PV, early and overt classical PV, advanced PV with MF and post-PV MF. ET heterozygous for the JAK2 V617F mutation is associated with low JAK2 mutation load and normal life expectance. PV patients are hetero-homozygous versus homozygous for the JAK2 V617F mutation in their early versus advanced stages with increasing JAK2 mutation load from less than 50% to 100% and increase of MPN disease burden during life long follow-up in terms of symptomatic splenomegaly, constitutional symptoms, bone marrow hypercellularity and secondary MF.
