The literature review presents data on the effect of organic and inorganic compounds, the so-called "main" xenobiotics (lead, mercury) on children and adolescents. It is noted that the effect of each heavy metal is different. Therefore, only their total assessment (blood, urine, saliva, hair, biological tissues) makes it possible to determine the level of toxic effects on the child and confirm the clinical decision.

Our research aims to produce qualitative and quantitative analysis of the use of narcotic drugs and psychoactive substances in 2013-2017 and their impact on drug abuse in the country. We studied 1519 medical cards of hospitalized beneficiaries. According to the obtained results, 'pharmacy' drug addiction is still widespread in Georgia.

Use of medications without doctor's prescription widely established in Georgia had negative impact on the health of the population and on the whole social situation. The use of home-made drugs "Krokodil", "Jeff" and "Vint" produced from the preparations bought without prescriptions (Codeine, Ephedrine), became a special matter of concern. Psychoactive substances became available for teenagers causing damage to their central nervous system and formation of drug-addiction in them.

Background: Substance abuse has been considered as a growing challenge in Georgia that is closely linked with human immune deficiency virus (HIV) and hepatitis C transmission due to unsafe injection and other uncontrolled behaviors. Methadone maintenance therapy is one of the major treatment options for opioid-dependent individuals. It has proven efficacy in decreasing illegal opioid consumption and criminal behavior as well as reducing the level of HIV infection, mortality, HCV infection, and increasing social functioning.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFInjecting drug user size estimation studies carried out in 2009, 2012 and 2015 revealed growing trends of drug abuse in Georgia:estimated number of people who inject drugs (PWID) have been increased from 40000 and 45000 to 50000. Since Soviet period the most popular injective narcotics have been opioids: home-made opium, heroine, buprenorphine and home-made desomorphine ("Krokodile") replacing each other on the black market. Self-made desomorphine typically contains big amounts of different toxic substances and causes significant somatic disorders, especially skin, bone, blood infections, liver and kidney failure; is highly addictive, associates with frequent injections that enhance injecting-related harm, including the risk of HIV transmission, in comparison with typical opioids.

Evaluation of State Opioid Substitution Treatment OST (methadone and buprenorphine/naloxone- Addnok-N) program in Georgia and optimization of the routine measurement instrument. Patients were recruited from 4 Tbilisi and 5 regional State Programs in May-October 2013. 2 structured self-questionnaires (one - anonymous for sensitive questions) were developed for patients to assess demographics, retention in treatment, mean drug dose, HIV and Hepatitis C and B status, illicit drug and alcohol use, social activities, crime involvement, health status, HIV risk behavior, treatment compliance and satisfaction.
