Department 11-Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Pediatric Surgery, University of Medicine and Pharmacy "Carol Davila", Eroii Sanitari Bvd., No. 8, Sector 5, 050471 Bucharest, Romania.

Article Synopsis
  • - This study investigates the use of fetal scalp pH monitoring in assessing fetal distress, highlighting its limitations compared to the standard fetal heart rate monitoring, which is more commonly used despite its drawbacks in confirming distress.
  • - The research emphasizes the importance of exploring new technologies, such as modern physics and nanomaterials, to improve fetal monitoring methods and better inform obstetricians during critical decisions.
  • - Fetal scalp pH sampling is still being evaluated for its effectiveness in current obstetric practices, particularly for cases like intrauterine growth restriction, suggesting that advancements in nanomedicine could enhance its application and overall maternal-fetal health outcomes.

Background: Hysterosalpingo-foam sonography (HyFoSy) has gained popularity in the last decades, as it represents a feasible, well-tolerated, and minimally invasive method of evaluation of tubal patency in cases of infertility. The purpose of this study was to communicate the technical tips and tricks based on our experience in performing HyFoSy, with the aim to improve the feasibility, to reduce the pain, and to evaluate pregnancy-obtaining rate after procedure.

Methods: Our observational study includes 672 patients from infertile couples who underwent HyFoSy for tubal patency evaluation.

Background and objectives: The time interval between stroke onset and hospital arrival is a major barrier for reperfusion therapies in acute ischemic stroke and usually accounts for most of the onset-to-treatment delay. The present study aimed to analyze the pre-hospital delays for patients with acute ischemic stroke admitted to a tertiary stroke center in Romania and to identify the factors associated with a late hospital arrival. Material and methods: The study population consisted of 770 patients hospitalized with the diagnosis of acute ischemic stroke in the University Emergency Hospital Bucharest during a 6-month period, between 1 January and 30 June 2018.

This paper presents a new approach based on hyperspectral imaging combined with an object-oriented classification method that allows the generation of burn depth classification maps facilitating easier characterization of burns. Hyperspectral images of 14 patients diagnosed with burns on the upper and lower limbs were acquired using a pushbroom hyperspectral imaging system. The images were analyzed using an object-oriented classification approach that uses objects with specific spectral, textural and spatial attributes as the minimum unit for classifying information.

Organ-on-chips (OOCs) are microfluidic devices used for creating physiological organ biomimetic systems. OOC technology brings numerous advantages in the current landscape of preclinical models, capable of recapitulating the multicellular assemblage, tissue-tissue interaction, and replicating numerous human pathologies. Moreover, in cancer research, OOCs emulate the 3D hierarchical complexity of in vivo tumors and mimic the tumor microenvironment, being a practical cost-efficient solution for tumor-growth investigation and anticancer drug screening.
