Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates how KPC variants of Klebsiella pneumoniae develop resistance to new β-lactam/β-lactamase inhibitor combinations (βL/βLICs) among patients treated with these antibiotics.
  • Researchers conducted a case series involving four patients with bloodstream infections linked to KPC-Kp, noting that most had underlying health issues and experienced severe complications.
  • Resistance mutations were identified in the KPC genes following treatment, emphasizing that the use of novel βL/βLICs can lead to the emergence of resistant strains, particularly against ceftazidime/avibactam.

Background: Hip osteoarthritis (HOA) is a disease with globally rising incidence that leads to disability and morbidity, overall, in older populations, and might be primary or secondary to numerous risk factors. The most common idiopathic HOA is generally a diagnosis of exclusion, with pathogenetic mechanisms largely still misunderstood. We aimed to investigate the correlation between femoral-acetabular and spinopelvic anatomical and computed tomography (CT) characteristics, and the presence of primary OA.

Contrast-enhanced ultrasound in renal cystic lesions: an update.

J Med Ultrason (2001)

October 2024

Department of Clinical and Experimental Medicine, Foggia University School of Medicine, Viale L. Pinto 1, 71121, Foggia, Foggia, Italy.

This narrative review aims to describe the current status of contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) in characterizing renal cystic lesion. The imaging techniques usually performed for their evaluation are ultrasonography (US), computed tomography (CT), and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) with different criteria of application based on the individual case and the purpose of the examination. Generally, US, as a non-ionizing examination, is the first imaging modality performed and therefore the one that incidentally detects cystic lesions.

The procedure of peritoneal dialysis (PD) catheter placement is of utmost importance for a good outcome of peritoneal dialysis. Currently, catheters are mainly placed by surgeons and interventional nephrologists. Still, there is a lack of trained personnel in many dialysis units, which can impair the efficiency of PD units and reduce the patients' possibility to enter a PD programme.
